The USDA suggested going one day a week without meat and it becomes controversial? What is wrong with people's eating habits in this country?

Just to be clear I'm not a vegetarian and I enjoy eating meat, but whatever happened to moderation? I can't wrap my head around the fact that some people don't have one meatless lunch per week. I'd guess that 80% of my lunches are vegetarian and as I said I'm far from being a hippy. I can't believe that people are bitching about food prices while continuing eat an unnaturally large amount of meat, which is far more expensive than plant based food.

We have "Meatless Mondays" advertised at my work's cafe... stupid. Excuse me while I dominate my massive Philly cheese steak.

Americans eat ALOT.

Also, meat industry is huge. People can't really say anything without getting bombarded with the tons of money being tossed everywhere with lobbying. This is true for almost everyone.

It's very strange. In Japan when the government said that everyone should try and cut down on power usage in light of the reactors shutting down to prevent brownouts for more important places like hospitals, businesses turned off their AC and lights and workers came into work in shorts and t shirts to offset the heat in the middle of the hot summer.

In America, same stunt gets pulled by the Energy Department, you'll probably see giant protests everywhere.

Americans are selfish. End of story.

We do have a lot of whiners, just look at the comments in the CNN article. A government agency gives some fairly mild advice about eating and those assholes start bitching about the nanny state "controlling their lives."

Give me a break.

^^ As mentioned above, the meat industry is huge in this country. They spend a ton of money on commercials and have lots of lobbyists.

You could probably feed a family in a 3rd world country with the amount of food that some americans shove in their face on a daily basis in America.

I had to laugh how the righties were up in arms that an internal usda newsletter suggested a meatless monday if you wanted to lower your carbon footprint.

Yet they had no problem with the newsletter having recipes for spare ribs, chicken, etc.

I like my carbon footprint to be able to literally leave footprints.

Decent vegetarian food, prepared well is scarce. Most people don't know what to do with it. Once you get past salad(where's the 1/2# of chicken on top?!), people are lost. I eat land meat once or twice a week, and water meat a couple times also. People need to educate themselves, and restaurants need to get past the salad for their vegetarian offerings.

I eat meat 2 to 3 times a week. I don't know how people can eat so much meat.

It's not like I pack away a steak 4 nights a week. I have meat as a "garnish" on a lot of things. Some chopped up ham or a slice or two bacon in an omlet. Couple pieces of bacon or a chicken strip on a salad. Small chicken breast in a stir fry ect.

I have meat daily, but it's not like I make entire meals out of it.

I only eat fish nowadays, and probably only twice a month. After I stopped eating meat for a couple months, I was appalled looking back at how I could have eaten as much as I used to.

I almost never eat a meat-free lunch/dinner. (Breakfast is cereal, so it's meat-free.) Meat isn't always in a huge chunk, but meat or other animal products (cheese, eggs) are always a significant part.

What I'd like to see is a carbon-footprint and energy analysis of different meats. I gather cows are bad and tilapia, being a cold-blooded, fast-growing plant eater, are good. But where does chicken fall? Tuna (canned)? Bison? Then what about cheese and eggs?

Also, for those of you eating meat-free meals, WTF are you eating? I can't even think of a meat-free, cheese-free, and egg-free meal.

I eat dairy and eggs. I'd have a hard time going vegan. My favorite foods are liberal vegetarian, but if you removed dairy; especially cheese, I'd get tired of it quick. I like Tex-Mex, and Indian. Those are both conducive to removing meat, and still tasting good.

i eat meat pretty much at every meal. no less than 1/4 a pound too, and that is only on sandwiches i make. typically i eat 2lbs of chicken quarters for dinner.

i don't eat breakfast very often either.

the only meal i can eat without meat is pizza.

Obligatory "Americans are the devil, stupid, etc.!"

I find that many people who greatly prefer meat to vegetables/other food groups are eating low quality food, of which it is the case that the meat dishes are more palatable than the vegetable ones. For example, I would rather eat some cooked chicken than a salad made with shit ingredients that has been sitting for a few days.

I have a hypothesis that some people's physiology, as determined by their genetics and evolutionary history, requires more meat to function smoothly than do others.

Why the hell would anyone want to go a day without meat? Sounds like crazy talk to me.
