If you found out that you mistakenly sent someone a check for $140 instead of $70, then based on your comment you're SOL since it was your mistake, no? However, I'm willing to bet you'd try to ask--if not demand--him to return the extra $70...assuming of course the person already cashed it.

Call them. It will be to your benefit as to how you view yourself. You'll know your a stand up kind of person and someone who can be trusted, and that's who you are. They aren't going to ask for it back, and if by chance they do... then do as another suggested and make them send you the box and the Fed Ex guy to your door.
It sounds stupid, but when I was a kid, I found something like $5 on the floor of the grocery store once. Instead of pocketing it, I turned it in to the manager who gave it back to some old lady who lost it. I haven't really always been that virtuous all my life, but when I really think about the kind of person I am, I think back to that incident and I got my answer. It ain't going to make a difference to anyone but yourself.

Call em and let em know about it. It's the right thing to do. I had something similar happen when I ordered a couple of acoustic guitars from Musicians Friend. Ordered 2 guitars and cases and some picks. total about $500. I got everything i ordered Plus a Martin D-15 acoustic with case Value $600. I was very tempted to keep it but I couldn't set that kind of example for my boys. I called them up and they were very appreciative. They didn't let me keep it:( but they did give me a $50 dollar credit towards anything i wanted in their catalog so that was pretty cool. They also sent Fedex right to my door to pick it up.

I doubt they will ask for it back anyways as they wont be able to sell it new even if you send it back.

Chill Bill. It was the right thing to do and you know it. Props to you for taking the high road - good man.

Rest assured that the Universe will one day see you rewarded :)

So they essentially said/implied that shipping the drive back is your responsibility? WTF--I would have told them that since it was their mistake in shipping you an extra product, it's solely their responsibility to arrange for it to be returned. Why the heck should you be expected to waste your time and money to return something you didn't ask for?

If indeed that is what Newegg is expecting you to do...that is a crock of BS on their part, plain and simple. If it were me, I would dare them to justify why I should be expected to pay to have it shipped back...

Oh well. It was worth a shot. Better to be the good guy now than feel bad about it down the line. Hopefully the $10 will cover it. If not, be sure to contact them again. You also shouldn't feel compelled to pack super well or ship with any special shipping. I know they don't pack my stuff very well..... :(

you should of keep it. you had an invoice that only showed one drive, so there was no paper trail. The guys packing the shippment put a hard drive in the box and forgot that he did, or he had another guy helping him that didn't know it was already there and probably had two days experience on the job. There would of been nothing legally that they could of done to you except MAYBE make you send the drive back if there ever found out. Oh and by the way I hope the one you sent back, it's serial numbers match the one that they recorded for the one drive on the invoice cause if you have to send it back to newegg if damaged they will see it as not the drive they sold you.

I seriously dout that they will reward you for being honest

Since when do we have to do right things to get rewards? We have a conscience that will stay with us forever. I totally believe that he did the right thing in returning the drive. Many of you are complaining that Newegg's prices are going up. I would suspect that he was not the only one to receive more than asked for. And based on this thread, many have kept the mistakes. Businesses must make up their losses somewhere.

I applaud you Hyperlite.

Tell them.

If you sell a hard drive to someone in FS/FT and accidentally pack two in there, or you sell them a case and leave the PSU in on accident, wouldn't you want them to at least tell you?

Edit: I just read.

It's good to see that you did the right thing.

Sheesh, just let them know. You'd not want someone to do the same thing to you if you screwed up, would you? I'd imagine 'worst' case you have to send it back and they pay for it all, and nothing is on your conscience. Best case they let you keep it, and you still have a good conscience.

i would call them.. somebody at newegg may be in deep trouble or get fired over missing inventory. at least this way they can keep track of their stock. its not worth getting somebody fired over.
