i love goodwill. i love wearing suit pants with a t-shirt because they're so comfortable. i'm not emo either. i buy t-shirts there usually if i need some shirts i don't care about getting dirty. i also buy name brand clothes but usually if they're on sale.

Maybe it is because I have been spoiled all my life, and don't know what it is like to be poor.

I often find name brand clothing with tags still on at the local GW. I've picked up several very nice wool sweaters for ~$2 a piece, despite the $60 price tags. I've found a ton of awesome beer glasses and steins as well. I used to shop there more, but nowadays I donate more than I buy :)

I have no problem shopping at thrift stores. Not only can you save money, but it helps avoid looking another shopping mall drone, and a cool thrift store shirt scores major fashion points that no label shirt can.

But let's be clear here, since you're obviously 14 and have no concept of the value of a dollar: If you spend money, you will no longer have that money. If you want to have or keep money, don't spend it on pointless shit. If you have money but your goal is to be poor, then keep right on shopping at Abercrombie with Mommie's Mastercard.

As far as I am concerned the wifey can just buy EVERYTHING at Goodwill lol.

Case and point she just bought shoes for the kids for $1.....Complete outfits for $4 and mostly goes on half price day at the end of the month. She loads up on stuff and saves us a TON of money....

You "Im too good to buy at goodwill" types just keep going to the expensive retail stores and pumping the economy up so my retirement investements go up in value lol...

If you are embarrassed to shop at a thrift store, then you probably need a dose of counseling. Your perception that only questionable individuals shop at these sites is just plain wrong. Let me give you this example of what you can do to items that you get from a thrift store:

http://howaboutorange.blogspot...ow-to-paint-chair.html

If you're concerned about fashion, let me tell you this story. My friend got a pretty unique velvet jacket at Goodwill. The jacket was purple. But every time he wore that thing to the club, he stood out well enough for the girls to notice and strike up a conversation with him.

I am too lazy to care about what other people think so I would never be embarrassed but goodwill is too far from where I live to make it worth going down there to just buy clothes.

I was like this as a kid. I wouldn't step into a Goodwill.

Then I went to college and tagged along with some friends. I've always been a tech-head, and loved breaking/fixing things, and rigging things together. I was kicking myself after that. We would go all the time looking for furniture and clothes.

I found a 5X Boy Scout shirt with all the badges. I picked it up, then decided against it. My friend grabbed it immediately. On the way out, he was putting it on and I said, "Just think, you're wearing a dead Boy Scout's shirt!". He turned green... :D

I'm now 10 years out of college. A buddy and I go every week to our local Goodwills and Salvations. I love browsing for classic electronics. I picked up an Atari 2600 (mint condition) and a ton of games, 2 controllers (also mint) for $10 for the lot. My buddy is into antique clocks. He's made quite a bit of cash selling them on Ebay.

For the record, I'm a network engineer at a bank. I can afford to spend tons of money anywhere I want. Thrift stores are fun, and the money always goes to a good cause.

Goodwill is made to give the disabled jobs. The items they sell are not meant for any one socioeconomic group.

Thrift shops are the original recycling (and yet, you'll never find a carbon credit buying elitist liberal in one).

utter bullshit.

Really? Have you been to a goodwill store? The funny thing is there is NEVER a hybrid in the parking lot.

Do liberals shop at thrift stores? To be sure. Do the elitist, guilt ridden, social climbing, busy body liberals shop there? Nope. They're the same ones that are too good for Walmart too.

I qualified my answer, too bad you were the one that lumped all liberals together.

i've never seen a republican at goodwill. well, you maybe, I suppose. is that generalized enough for you?

I'm a libertarian... but nice try.

Sorry your panties got in a twist because I pointed out the hypocrisy of liberal elitists. Had this been a religious charity thread, I would have done the same for conservative elitists.

 I've seen Prius's at the Salvation Army store. And there are thrift stores in SF, Berkeley, Cambridge, etc which are some the most liberal cities in the country.

Stop your weakass stereotyping.

Dude, by definition an "elitist" wouldn't be caught dead at a thrift store.

And again, just because those are liberal cities doesn't mean the thrift shops are frequented by elitist liberals. More than likely the broke ones who don't think they're too good for thrift shops or Walmarts.

Where's this definition of elitist? So, elitist conservatives wouldn't go to one of these places either? Or just not liberals with hybrids?

I've already shot down your argument, so please just stop.

So, what's the argument for seeing a BMW and a Prius at the Salvation Army store? I'm guessing they must be elitist conservatives?

Elitist Republicans don't try and force others into greenie bullshit. My point was about hypocrisy, but thanks for missing it.

You didn't shoot down sh!t. The same elitist liberals that wouldn't be caught dead at a Walmart wouldn't shop at a Goodwill either. That's a fact. You can hem and haw and try to defend them all you want, but they wouldn't be caught dead there and you know it.

Why don't we ask Al Gore when was the last time he went shopping at a goodwill store? How about Hillary Clinton? Obama?

I thought so.

WHAT?! This is your argument? You fucking simpleton. Elitist Republicans try and force others into their religious bullshit, and their ANWAR bullshit, their abstinence bullshit and as so very clearly evidenced by you, their divisive bullshit.

And how about this? Why don't we ask Ted Stevens, John McCain or the rotting, hell-bound corpse of Strom Thurmond if they ever have shopped at Goodwill? I'm not sure where you're getting this Republican good old' boy image from but I think you've seen one too many cowboy movies.

YO! dipsh!t! I'm a libertarian.

OOPS! Swing and a miss!!!

I have no problem pointing out the hypocrisy of the religious right and conservative elitists. But just as I told the last whining liberal panty waist... I'll tell you: Thanks for jumping to conclusions and getting your panties all twisted and assuming I'm a republican.

It's not the religous right telling me I must recycle. Nope, that's the elitist left... who then wouldn't dream of stooping low enough as to shop in a thrift shop. THERE is the HYPOCRISY. It's like a religious right loon telling me I must abstain, and then butt fscking little boys himself. I'd have the same response.

So tell me, who's the fscking simpleton who thought throwing out republicans not going to goodwill would be an effective an argument against my pointing out the hypocrisy of liberal elitists? That would be you.

First and foremost: shut the fuck up and do something positive for society. Honestly, you're contributing nothing to this conversation. You make me sick.

I'm not only an "Elitist liberal" I'm also a violent liberal, in that I wish violence upon you. It's people like you that are dragging this country down a deep hole with rhetoric being spoon fed to you by Rush and the brownshirts just like him.

And yes, I am too good to shop at Walmart. But that's NOTHING like a thrift store, which I do shop at. Particularly the ones that support AIDS charities, owned by gay men. Out of the Closet thrift stores, to be precise. I'd like to know if you'd shop in those. Your comparison is fucking ridiculous. You lose.

Which part of the heartland are you in? I'll make a stop the next time I'm flying over and we can go have a drink. Seriously. I'd love to hear all of your salient points in person.

Wow. Threats???

Springfield, IL. You can find me Mon, Tue, Thur and Fri working out at Golds Gym (1600 E Clear Lake Ave) around 10am and Im the head bouncer at Marly's on 5th street. I'd give you my street address, but you'd probably just try to fsck up my house like the little internet tough guy you are.

Please do come see me. PLEASE???

And furthermore, dumbass: I am libertarian and have spent the better part of the last 20 years volunteering my time with various HIV/AIDS outreaches. Many of my life long friends are GLBT... including a rather conservative libertarian on this very board. Sadly, though, many have died while the religious right condemned them.

So while you've been just making yourself feel good by spending a few bucks on some thrift shop items, I've been actually working to help make people's lives better.

Really, come see me, Mr violent liberal (talk about hypocrisy). Pleeeeease???

Please, I don't make threats on the internet, that's a fantastic way to get yourself arrested. You're not worth my time. That being said, Libertarian, Republican etc, etc, it's all different shades of douchebag. I only hope that your dumbfuck worldview gets your utterly destroyed someday, that's all.

That being said, I'm not going to derail this thread further and drag it deeper into the abyss. You're a big man and you have all of our respect. You're a bouncer at a club and you go to the gym. Congrats. For a guy that spends so much time working out and keeping undesirables out of all of those hot Illinois nightspots, you sure have a lot of time to post on these boards.

Tell the gay guy in Springfield those of us in California say hello and that we're rooting for him.

I guess Mr "violent liberal" isn't so tough after all, huh?

No, you see, once I was liberal. Then I grew up and realized that nobody owed me anything. I realized that socialism is anathema to freedom. And I realized that while the silly Religious Right is losing at every effort to take my freedoms away, the socialist left is gaining ground and is, by far, the biggest threat to my rights and freedoms in the real world.

Maybe someday when you realize restrictive laws and government isn't the answer to every problem, you'll come around too.

Libertarianism is about freedom and protection of rights. Something neither the right or the left respects anymore. You can jerk your left knee and try to lump libertarianism in with republicans all day long... it just shows how fscking stupid you are.

I sure was worth your time when you characterized yourself as a "violent liberal" and suggested you should come visit me. I guess you were wearing your panties a little lower then, huh?

What? Your truck's suspension can't handle an extra ~100 Ibs? I'm missing something here.

Yes, you are missing something here. I was exaggerating the size/weight of a 20-something inch CRT monitor - much like people used to do to the original Xbox.

Actually nevermind, we're watching a train wreck from our bus, when some dude stabs another guy, beheads him and then hijacks the bus with us still in it. Yeah.
