Never shopped there, and I wouldn't feel right doing it. IMO goodwill is made for people who can't afford regular stuff, and if there is anything good there I'd save it for them.

Goodwill is made to give the disabled jobs. The items they sell are not meant for any one socioeconomic group.

Thrift shops are the original recycling (and yet, you'll never find a carbon credit buying elitist liberal in one).

utter bullshit.

Really? Have you been to a goodwill store? The funny thing is there is NEVER a hybrid in the parking lot.

Do liberals shop at thrift stores? To be sure. Do the elitist, guilt ridden, social climbing, busy body liberals shop there? Nope. They're the same ones that are too good for Walmart too.

I qualified my answer, too bad you were the one that lumped all liberals together.

 I've seen Prius's at the Salvation Army store. And there are thrift stores in SF, Berkeley, Cambridge, etc which are some the most liberal cities in the country.

Stop your weakass stereotyping.

Dude, by definition an "elitist" wouldn't be caught dead at a thrift store.

And again, just because those are liberal cities doesn't mean the thrift shops are frequented by elitist liberals. More than likely the broke ones who don't think they're too good for thrift shops or Walmarts.

Actually most people I know who shop at those stores are in fact liberal SF elites who live in SF and work for places like google. They like to be eccentric and go for authentic worn in and/or retro/artsy stuff. The kinds of elites you are thinking about are Orange county style conservatives who go for more preppy expensive brands (which often try to imitate the worn in look of the type of stuff you can buy at a thrift store for a tiny fraction of the price).
So really, your thinking is pretty flawed, but it's amusing to see you continue pressing on with it.

As a guy who graduated from Berkeley and currently working/residing in Laguna (OC) I can tell you that Goodwill in the Bay Area is not only frequented by elitist liberals, but directed towards them. With the poverty line drawn at 50k/year, you'd be hard pressed to find the argument that goodwill is meant for the poor when there are no poor people within a 10 mile radius.

As for orange county, I've only found a single goodwill store in the area of laguna, and because people here are freack'in loaded, the donations are displayed in the quality and environment of most department stores. People shop there all the time, as even here, there is a type of people drawn to that retro/eccentric/earth saving/urban feel.

I'd say the only people who feel 'ashamed' to shop there are the people who are probably middle class (probably slightly above) that are trying to feel rich because they are insecure with how much money they make compared to those around them, and feel the need to flaunt their brands in a pathetic attempt to look wealthy. We get that alot with tourists who try to fit in here.

Please, I don't make threats on the internet, that's a fantastic way to get yourself arrested. You're not worth my time. That being said, Libertarian, Republican etc, etc, it's all different shades of douchebag. I only hope that your dumbfuck worldview gets your utterly destroyed someday, that's all.

That being said, I'm not going to derail this thread further and drag it deeper into the abyss. You're a big man and you have all of our respect. You're a bouncer at a club and you go to the gym. Congrats. For a guy that spends so much time working out and keeping undesirables out of all of those hot Illinois nightspots, you sure have a lot of time to post on these boards.

Tell the gay guy in Springfield those of us in California say hello and that we're rooting for him.

I guess Mr "violent liberal" isn't so tough after all, huh?

No, you see, once I was liberal. Then I grew up and realized that nobody owed me anything. I realized that socialism is anathema to freedom. And I realized that while the silly Religious Right is losing at every effort to take my freedoms away, the socialist left is gaining ground and is, by far, the biggest threat to my rights and freedoms in the real world.

Maybe someday when you realize restrictive laws and government isn't the answer to every problem, you'll come around too.

Libertarianism is about freedom and protection of rights. Something neither the right or the left respects anymore. You can jerk your felt knee and try to lump libertarianism in with republicans all day long... it just shows how fscking stupid you are.

I sure was worth your time when you characterized yourself as a "violent liberal" and suggested you should come visit me. I guess you were wearing your panties a little lower then, huh?

What's it like to know that everything you do or say has no bearing on the world and that once you die, you'll be utterly forgotten?

Dunno. I suppose it would feel a lot like being you.

K. Well, the next time I'm in Springfield, we'll go out for a drink. I'm looking forward to hearing you whackjob theories!

Only a socialist would consider freedom and personal responsibility (the cornerstones of libertarianism and the founding values of this country) to be "whack job theories."

Hahaha. Oh, you're just too precious.

I'm sure the "conservatives" running this country would consider those to be "whack job theories" as well. ;)

Please do come see me. PLEASE???

And furthermore, dumbass: I am libertarian and have spent the better part of the last 20 years volunteering my time with various HIV/AIDS outreaches. Many of my life long friends are GLBT... including a rather conservative libertarian on this very board. Sadly, though, many have died while the religious right condemned them.

So while you've been just making yourself feel good by spending a few bucks on some thrift shop items, I've been actually working to help make people's lives better.

Really, come see me, Mr violent liberal (talk about hypocrisy). Pleeeeease???

Lol, what a pathetic attempt at intimidation.

Intimidation? No. A response to an attempt to intimidate, yes. Funny how you didn't include his "violent liberal" rant in your quote. I believe the "pathetic" part falls on your attempt to misrepresent what happened and edit out his post:

First and foremost: shut the fuck up and do something positive for society. Honestly, you're contributing nothing to this conversation. You make me sick.

I'm not only an "Elitist liberal" I'm also a violent liberal, in that I wish violence upon you. It's people like you that are dragging this country down a deep hole with rhetoric being spoon fed to you by Rush and the brownshirts just like him.

And yes, I am too good to shop at Walmart. But that's NOTHING like a thrift store, which I do shop at. Particularly the ones that support AIDS charities, owned by gay men. Out of the Closet thrift stores, to be precise. I'd like to know if you'd shop in those. Your comparison is fucking ridiculous. You lose.

Which part of the heartland are you in? I'll make a stop the next time I'm flying over and we can go have a drink. Seriously. I'd love to hear all of your salient points in person.

To be fair, I had a pretty heavy hand in that to. I'm taking myself out of this thread and I apologize for contributing to it's meltdown. Carry on.

My only hesitation would be supporting dogmatic organizations. Just the name "Salvation Army" alone is pretty creepy. However the SPCA is one that I can gladly get behind, as 'twere (doggy style). When I was a kid I would get fashionably unfashionable clothes (primarily shirts) from such places. Never stopped picking up books. Most recently I was dropping off a couple bags o' clothes and spotted a belt which I had been in the market for anyway. It cost $1 and was higher quality than the last $30 or whatever one I bought from some detestable chain store. In retrospect I should have axed if I could have it gratis since donating all that schtuff.

I find shopping embarrassing. I prefer to let me butler shop for me. As long as he gets me good clothes, I don't care where he gets them from.

I've found a few great deals at Goodwill!

Now the Goodwill Outlet Store (Yes...they have an outlet store for Goodwill) is freakin' scary: a bunch of bins lined up with signs posted everywhere stating that objects in bins may be sharp and they're not responsible for injuries blah blah blah.

why be embarrassed? It's not like like the labels on the clothes say Goodwill on them... Anyone ever see a kayak/canoe at Goodwill? I'm looking for one and seems like it be a good place to get one cheaply....
