Never shopped there, and I wouldn't feel right doing it. IMO goodwill is made for people who can't afford regular stuff, and if there is anything good there I'd save it for them.
Goodwill is made to give the disabled jobs. The items they sell are not meant for any one socioeconomic group.
Thrift shops are the original recycling (and yet, you'll never find a carbon credit buying elitist liberal in one).
utter bullshit.
Really? Have you been to a goodwill store? The funny thing is there is NEVER a hybrid in the parking lot.
Do liberals shop at thrift stores? To be sure. Do the elitist, guilt ridden, social climbing, busy body liberals shop there? Nope. They're the same ones that are too good for Walmart too.
I qualified my answer, too bad you were the one that lumped all liberals together.
I've seen Prius's at the Salvation Army store. And there are thrift stores in SF, Berkeley, Cambridge, etc which are some the most liberal cities in the country.
Stop your weakass stereotyping.
Dude, by definition an "elitist" wouldn't be caught dead at a thrift store.
And again, just because those are liberal cities doesn't mean the thrift shops are frequented by elitist liberals. More than likely the broke ones who don't think they're too good for thrift shops or Walmarts.
Actually most people I know who shop at those stores are in fact liberal SF elites who live in SF and work for places like google. They like to be eccentric and go for authentic worn in and/or retro/artsy stuff. The kinds of elites you are thinking about are Orange county style conservatives who go for more preppy expensive brands (which often try to imitate the worn in look of the type of stuff you can buy at a thrift store for a tiny fraction of the price).
So really, your thinking is pretty flawed, but it's amusing to see you continue pressing on with it.
As a guy who graduated from Berkeley and currently working/residing in Laguna (OC) I can tell you that Goodwill in the Bay Area is not only frequented by elitist liberals, but directed towards them. With the poverty line drawn at 50k/year, you'd be hard pressed to find the argument that goodwill is meant for the poor when there are no poor people within a 10 mile radius.
As for orange county, I've only found a single goodwill store in the area of laguna, and because people here are freack'in loaded, the donations are displayed in the quality and environment of most department stores. People shop there all the time, as even here, there is a type of people drawn to that retro/eccentric/earth saving/urban feel.
I'd say the only people who feel 'ashamed' to shop there are the people who are probably middle class (probably slightly above) that are trying to feel rich because they are insecure with how much money they make compared to those around them, and feel the need to flaunt their brands in a pathetic attempt to look wealthy. We get that alot with tourists who try to fit in here.
