Never shopped there, and I wouldn't feel right doing it. IMO goodwill is made for people who can't afford regular stuff, and if there is anything good there I'd save it for them.

Goodwill is made to give the disabled jobs. The items they sell are not meant for any one socioeconomic group.

Thrift shops are the original recycling (and yet, you'll never find a carbon credit buying elitist liberal in one).

utter bullshit.

Really? Have you been to a goodwill store? The funny thing is there is NEVER a hybrid in the parking lot.

Do liberals shop at thrift stores? To be sure. Do the elitist, guilt ridden, social climbing, busy body liberals shop there? Nope. They're the same ones that are too good for Walmart too.

I qualified my answer, too bad you were the one that lumped all liberals together.

 I've seen Prius's at the Salvation Army store. And there are thrift stores in SF, Berkeley, Cambridge, etc which are some the most liberal cities in the country.

Stop your weakass stereotyping.

Dude, by definition an "elitist" wouldn't be caught dead at a thrift store.

And again, just because those are liberal cities doesn't mean the thrift shops are frequented by elitist liberals. More than likely the broke ones who don't think they're too good for thrift shops or Walmarts.

Where's this definition of elitist? So, elitist conservatives wouldn't go to one of these places either? Or just not liberals with hybrids?

I've already shot down your argument, so please just stop.

So, what's the argument for seeing a BMW and a Prius at the Salvation Army store? I'm guessing they must be elitist conservatives?

Elitist Republicans don't try and force others into greenie bullshit. My point was about hypocrisy, but thanks for missing it.

You didn't shoot down sh!t. The same elitist liberals that wouldn't be caught dead at a Walmart wouldn't shop at a Goodwill either. That's a fact. You can hem and haw and try to defend them all you want, but they wouldn't be caught dead there and you know it.

Why don't we ask Al Gore when was the last time he went shopping at a goodwill store? How about Hillary Clinton? Obama?

I thought so.

I used to stop by Goodwill all the time before they started shifting the electronics to other stores. $3 for an old computer, $2 for a classic transistor radio with a leather case in good condition, and I got my OM-10 body for 50c.

Now that they ship those treasures off and the local store is mostly clothes I don't go there much other than to pick up a book now and then.

That's stupid. I'm sure you'd get the same answer from them if you asked when the last time they shopped at Macy's, Target, Sears, etc.

Don't bother 'arguing' with Amused. It's a waste of time and only gives him the attention he so desperately needs. He doesn't exactly understand arguing yet clings haphazardly to the terminology in an attempt to bully people into submission. Once an opponent gives up (usually out of sheer frustration), he claims a win. Neat strategy, huh?

As far as the OP goes it seems like he's rather young and immature. Plenty of people shop at goodwill because they need to or simply want to. Shopping strictly with regards to brands only makes someone else who doesn't care about you that much richer. As you age and your priorities naturally shift you'll understand that fact.

I shop at thrift stores all the time when I'm looking for parts for projects. I recently bought a $3 vacuum and took the blower motor out to use in a project.

I've found that Goodwill and Salvation Army tend to focus more on clothes. There are two thrift stores here that are full of all kinds of cool things. One is run by a US Veterans group and the other is run by a council for the blind.

Actually most people I know who shop at those stores are in fact liberal SF elites who live in SF and work for places like google. They like to be eccentric and go for authentic worn in and/or retro/artsy stuff. The kinds of elites you are thinking about are Orange county style conservatives who go for more preppy expensive brands (which often try to imitate the worn in look of the type of stuff you can buy at a thrift store for a tiny fraction of the price).
So really, your thinking is pretty flawed, but it's amusing to see you continue pressing on with it.

Wahhhh, I shopped at Goodwill once so now I'm poor. Get over it, a good deal is a good deal and all poor people aren't as bad as you think they are.

The good news is that usually all that's really needed for a person to grow up is time.

First and foremost: shut the fuck up and do something positive for society. Honestly, you're contributing nothing to this conversation. You make me sick.

I'm not only an "Elitist liberal" I'm also a violent liberal, in that I wish violence upon you. It's people like you that are dragging this country down a deep hole with rhetoric being spoon fed to you by Rush and the brownshirts just like him.

And yes, I am too good to shop at Walmart. But that's NOTHING like a thrift store, which I do shop at. Particularly the ones that support AIDS charities, owned by gay men. Out of the Closet thrift stores, to be precise. I'd like to know if you'd shop in those. Your comparison is fucking ridiculous. You lose.

Which part of the heartland are you in? I'll make a stop the next time I'm flying over and we can go have a drink. Seriously. I'd love to hear all of your salient points in person.

Sure I shop there. The salvation army too.
They are both very good charities and offer the same sort of things you might find at yard sales, which I also like to buy things from.

WHAT?! This is your argument? You fucking simpleton. Elitist Republicans try and force others into their religious bullshit, and their ANWAR bullshit, their abstinence bullshit and as so very clearly evidenced by you, their divisive bullshit.

And how about this? Why don't we ask Ted Stevens, John McCain or the rotting, hell-bound corpse of Strom Thurmond if they ever have shopped at Goodwill? I'm not sure where you're getting this Republican good old' boy image from but I think you've seen one too many cowboy movies.

I don't like going there but my wife and her girlfriends like bargain hunting. She gets nice name brand stuff for a song. The only trouble I have is with pants but a local dry cleaners will seem a pair for $10 or so. A couple of months ago we went to a consignment shop and got 2 pair of dress pants, 3 top brand golf/polo shirts for me and a bunch of wife stuff for under $90.

I don't. Not because I have some love affair with name brand expensive shit (I shop at Costco and whatever is on sale in sports stores) but because I have a pathological fear of catching some dermatologic skin infection like scabies, ringworm, Morgellans and maybe even MRSA. Irrational? Yes, very, as I know I can wash anything I buy used and the actual chance of catching anything is virtually nil. Nonetheless, I allow myself a few harmless neurosis.

I also don't shake hands.

What? Your truck's suspension can't handle an extra ~100 Ibs? I'm missing something here.

You're missing two AA batteries. They belong in your sarcasm meter.

Hell yeah I shop at Goodwill and the like. Get around winter time and go find yourself a 1000.00 full length coat for 5.00. Or if you are like me and work outside, find some really decent ( like 150.00) Eddie Bauer Raincoat for 4.00 . Yeah, I worry about what my friends would say. Fuck them.

So, the moral of the story little boy is this: You suck for having friends like this and and your friends should go to hell.

I laugh at those that think shopping at a thrift store is embarrassing. Such a silly delusional notion. I laugh 'cause I know, that guy that looks at me and thinks I am beneath him as I walk into the thrift store does not realise I have the guts to do so where he does not - he is beneath me! I laugh because that guy walks with his head tilted down, always in fear of what others think, while I walk with my head up. I laugh because I have money in the bank and no credit card debt where that guy has high balances on his credit cards, living paycheck to paycheck, while those balances creep higher, and his bank balance is never enough, all because he's afraid what other might think if he shopped smart, rather than being the sheep he is always falling for what advertisers say. I laugh because I was was young and stupid once, thught similarly, but also believed fears were something to face, not run away from, and so I walked into that first thrift store and experience something that guy may never experience. I laugh, because as well all learn from our experiences, that guy will stay stupid all his life.

LOL!

I shop at thrift stores all the time, great deals on jeans. Just bought a pair of Old Navy jeans for $3.00. The fit is a little large eventhough they're labeled as my size, so they're my new shop jeans. :)
