If I'm doing 65 in a 65 and someone is flying up doing 85 behind me, should I get out of the way? Does it matter that I'm a legal speed and the other person is not?

Yes. You should get out of the way.

Regardless of the speed you are driving, if you are in the left lane, and you are not actively passing anybody, and people are approaching from the rear at a faster pace than you, it is your duty to get back into the lane IN WHICH YOU BELONG.

The left lane is not for cruising. People just can't get their heads around that very simple concept apparently, even when it is taught at every single driving school, and is a part of driving guidelines/laws, at least so far as I can tell... it's nearly universal.

Two lane, three lane, or even four lane (one direction)... it doesn't matter. If you are in the left lane, and there is space in a lane to your right, you are basically wrong. Yes, sometimes it's annoying to hop from right to left back into right and then to left and then right again, so if there is intermittent traffic you are passing but not going all that much faster than them, you'll likely settle for the left until there is a wide clearing. Then you should get back over.
But I have seen so many people cruise at the speed limit, in the furthest left lane (regardless of # of lanes), and there is plenty of empty road to their right. I just don't get it.
Oblivious or trolling on the roads, it's wrong either way.

Don't worry if other people feel like testing/breaking the law - YOU are creating a safety issue, even if following all laws, just because you decide you are *right* and are in the wrong lane at that particular moment.

I rarely see someone holding up the left lane driving under the speed limit. Around here, pretty much everyone does 5 over. The retards that are "impeded" usually want to go 10-15-20 mph over the limit. Forgive me if I do not seem to care that they are momentarily inconvenienced.

Left lane exit.

Rural areas, I agree with you. Inner city, your argument doesn't hold up unless you can point me to a law that defines exactly when someone doing the posted speed limit is allowed to enter the left lane to exit.

Well your mentality is the problem and why our highways are usually congested. Everyone wants to get to the left and be the boss, but if everyone stayed as far right as possible and only merged left to pass and/or faster traffic flow; we wouldn't need all the highway work.

As much as you believe everyone is doing 5 over, in my experience especially in our tolled express lanes; I will find a guy doing 55mph in a 65mph or worse 70mph lane regularly. They could move over, what they do that is even worse is pace the right side traffic.

Let's get really specific right in something that affects only a handful of those living in a cowtown.

Like all exits one is supposed to yield to passing traffic and merge over when it's safe then quickly exit. If you are in that 'exit' lane for more than a 1/4 mile you are just being an asshat.

I can't help but notice that the larger the vehicle (huge, jacked-up trucks are worst) the more balsy the driver feels he/she is entitled to be. "I've spent big bucks to be menacing and by golly, I'm gonna menace!" is the attitude. Sadly, days when consideration for others was the norm are pretty much gone...

You are the problem.

If I'm going 10 over in the HOV lane, I'll be damned if I'm going to move over. Wanna go 20 over the speed limit and expect me to move for semi-abiding by the traffic laws? Fuck off and move your own self.

Depends. If you are in any other lane than the right lane you move the f out of the way. other wise you are bring very inconsiderate and obstructing traffic.

I have a bone to pick with that. If there are only two lanes, then that's fine...left lane pass only, right lane everyone else. However, on three lane roads the right lane is for trucks, slower than speed limit travel, and exiting, and nothing else. Regular travel AT the speed limit is the middle lane, and passing is still on the left. As you add more lanes traffic traveling at the speed limit is allowed further and further out, as trucks, exits, and other slow movers occupy more and more right lanes.

There is no other way traffic could function, since it's frequently impossible to travel the speed limit in the right lane it would require constant lane changes for passing and would create an unsafe environment. The correct paradigm is to reserve the leftmost (or in extreme multilane roads the two leftmost) for faster than limit travel, just as the right one to two lanes are for slower than limit travel. The burden is on those choosing to break the law by speeding to move left and pass those who are driving correctly. In any other lane the limit should be the norm.

I'm going to say no... Some people are just so effing impatient: they honk when they're 3 cars back and can't see oncoming traffic, they make stupidly aggressive turns into oncoming traffic, cut off peds, etc., etc., etc.

this is very true.

It's up to us to step up to them.

Lol this guy can't change lanes without creating an unsafe environment. If you are driving the same speed as the car in the lane next to you, even if there is another lane open to the left of you, you are still doing it wrong, because now it takes only one asshole to get to the left of you at 65 and everyone is fucked. Rightmost lane always unless you are passing or using left exit in 1/4 mile or less. ALWAYS. If you want to get to 2nd lane near entance ramps to be courteous to incoming traffic, that's cool, too, but get back over when clear.

lawlz, this guy thinks that changing lanes regularly can be just as safe in the aggregate as staying on one lane.

Turns out that increasing the number of low-likelihood dangerous events leads to an aggregate increase in said events!

Would road rage decrease if law enforcement enforced impeding laws?
I know I get angry when I get behind some dip shit driving like he/she has no clue. 42 cars lined up behind them and they won't get over.

That's why I like to commute on my bike. I can split lanes (California) and go by them.

Hey Olds, you would really hate it around here.

Illinois folks seem to have a problem of staying stopped at green lights.

It's bizarre.

I think what has happened to these people is that because there are so many long traffic lights here that they are is a stupor when on the road.

You're just flat out wrong.

page 36: On roads with more than two lanes traveling in the same direction, use the right lane for slower speeds, the middle lanes for higher speeds, and the left-hand lane for passing only.

So, exactly what I said is true, and what you said is an ignorant, pitiable, self-centered prick view that essentially ruins the world for people who are good enough human beings to actually deserve to continue breathing.

Have a nice day.

Two douches are so much better than one.

If you're in the left lane and not passing, yes. If you're in the right lane minding your own business, no.

This x1000000000. Hit the nail right on the head.

I believe most above that say they block traffic only wish they could. lolz. usually it only takes me coming up behind. A few times I have to dip my lights.

The funny part is when I pass beeping at them and lunging at their car like a ravenous beast, they pull right over and stay there probably trying to find a napkin to clean up their piss and shit.

The consummate internet tough guy right here folks.

How does the hov lane fit into this discussion? It's often the left-most lane but not considered as such when it comes to passing, right?

Understand I don't usually deal with hov lanes so this is more of a curiosity when traveling through places that do have them.
