Nice find. I'll have to check this out. I'm just wondering why they'd give away a copy of the game when it's still selling for like $40?

because blizzard are only getting $10 max from each retail copy, whereas if somebody only pays for a month's wow, they've made more money

Bah this pisses me off I just purchased the game last week for $55 after tax.

I also think a lot of people are questioning this because when you purchase the game it comes with a free 10-day guest pass for a friend. But with the guest pass after the 10 days you still have to go out and purchase the game to continue playing. You do get a CD Key when you use the guest pass but that's just so you're able to create a temp. account to try the game out with.

If this is truely the entire game for $10 + 14 free days I just wasted a large amount of cash 🙁

Well, I just wasted 8 bucks. On the back of the cd case, it says that in order to continue your 14 day trial, you must buy the retail game. No where does it say you can continue to just pay the subscription price and continue playing. Again, it indicates you must purchase the game after 14 days to keep playing. Sorry folks.

hmmm. too bad. I suspect though that this will be the trend - They give away the game (download or cd) and make you pay the $15/month rent.

Ok I thought that was too good to be true - phew! (Though I guess I kinda wish I could have taken advantage of this to get my friends hooked, oh well)

So far I see conflicting information. Some people reporting that it lets you keep going without paying retail, and others who say not. I'll wait for more to try it first I think.

Isn't this thread evidence enough? Lots of people will try it if its freen (even start a subscription), but aren't willing to fork over the initial investment. More subs > more copies sold

I don't think anyone has VERIFIED that it works as menioned. Many have confirmed that it does require you to buy the retail version.

What I wonder is if you can continue with the acct you setup and just add the CD key? IT would stink to get two weeks in to it and have to start over.

u dont start over, if u have to pay to get the full version, u just apply the cd key to the account u created. The toons u worked on for the 2 weeks will still be tied to the account.

As for needing the retail version, i guess we wont know for sure until the 2wks are up.

Still 14 day trial for this game for cost of a mag is cheap cheap cheap.

Ive played my share of mmorpgs, this one has been the most fun by far. Blizzard has done an excellent job of keeping things interesting through early, mid and late games..

I have only played WoW and GW but, WoW is by far my all time fav including all the first person shooters - which stinks because I feel compelled to pay the rent 😛

I haven't picked up a copy of PC Gamer in awhile so I think I'll see if it's at my newsstand today and take it home for some rigorous testing and experiments.

I might still pick up the mag to. I mean even its just a 14 day trial. Its better then going and paying $50 just to find out its not your kind of game. Plus you get a mag, hehe.

Any update before I drive all across the city looking for a copy?

I guess bookstores like Border's would be the best bet for a DVD copy. Not sure the best place to pick one up. Any ideas?

I just called the local Barnes & Noble in Chico, CA and they have the September issue on the shelf. I will stop by on the way home, check the disc, and post a verified outcome.

I want a copy just so I dont have to install from 4 freaking CDs, which takes close to an hour on a reasonably fast machine.

I have a stagnant account at the moment since when I played, no one I knew played also so I quit. It would be nice if these DVDs allow you to continue playing without buying retail copy. Has anyone tried going into the account and billing section on the website and entering a two month gamecard. It would show the extended time in the detailed section, wouldn't it?

Thus verifying or denying that the DVD can be used instead of retail copy.
