They probably make more money farming gold in the game than they do in real life. I just got back from China, and people there are poor beyond belief. Average salary works out to about $100 USD a month. If you make $10,000 USD a year, you're considered very high income. Kinda puts a damper on the whole "China's the next superpower" thing. They've still got a very, very long way to go.

So? Its all relative to their cost of living. If you make $60,000 a year in New York, you're a poor mofo, but if you make $60,000 in Tenessee, you're a rich mofo. 🙂

Yeah, but no country is going to become the world superpower when it's average citizen doesn't make in a month what some people in other countries carry in their wallet daily. Their "huge manpower potential" is pretty much worthless from what I've seen. The vast majority of people that I saw in China (and this was in major cities - Shanghai and Beijing) are broke, lazy, and rather unmotivated. They're all looking to take the shortest fastest path to get whatever they need to get accomplished...and that's not a good foundation. It's really tough to describe what the people there are like. You have to see it for yourself.

BTW, did everyone see that press release that blizzard did? They are now the #1 MMORPG in the world. 3.5 million customers total and of those, 1.5 million accounts from China from thier recent release there (though you gotta wonder how many of those accounts are farmers selling gold and stuff on ebay).

If you haven't already, read this fascinating account of how the farming "sweatshops" operate: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3141815
They typically get paid to sit in front of the computer while its running bot programs to make sure they can reply if a GM comes along. They typically earn about $150 per month, while the owners get at least $60,000 a month per employee. So yeah, thats about 50% more than the average salery of $100 a month that you mentioned. No wonder they like to do it. I don't blame the people in china so much (most are just trying to make ends meet) as I do blizzard for not taking more proactive stances about this stuff. I've been reading the WoW boards in last few days, everyone has a story about farmers. You'd think it wouldn't be that hard for blizzard to figure out who was doing it.

Even if they do know who's doing it, it's near impossible to relate a real life monetary transaction with the resulting in-game one. Just because toon A farms tons of gold and plays in China isn't grounds for banning the account. There have been a few people though that have been banned because they admitted to being gold farmers from China talking about their wages etc.

Yes, however bots are against the TOS of the game. And most farmer use bots of some sort. No need to relate real life to the game to get rid of the farmers. They just need to get cracking on better bot detection.

Probably wont know till someone finishes the 14 day trial. I was wondering if theyd bill you even though you didnt get the retail. Like say when your 14 days are up and you didnt cancel.

Called Blizzard. Obviously you do have to buy a retail version.

"The text PCGamer put in the install screen is very misleading. You do your 14 day trail, once it's complete we freeze your account until you decide to buy a full retail version."

Ok so deal is officialy dead then. Unles you like to pay an extra $10 to try it out before you shell out the $40 or $50 for retail.

so the two weeks should be up for some people now.... even though it's a slim chance I figured it was worth checking. Anyone who got the demo know if you have to buy the retail version?

i just picked up the PC gamer today, installing it now. They require a CC for verication but it says that unless u buy the retail version the CC will not be charged. Also, I noticed that Bestbuy has the retail version for 39.99 this week.

From the Account Management Page
This account is a Trial account. A retail Authentication Key will be required to continue playing after the trial time period expires.

Your World of Warcraft Trial ends in 14 day(s). If you wish to continue playing with this account after the trial period ends, simply purchase a retail copy of World of Warcraft and enter the Authentication Key in the boxes below.

Amazon also has the game for $39.99 w/ free super saver shipping. The game cards are also on sale....60 days for $25.99 w/ free shipping as well.
