Wow is nice, but $15 a month, why not go straight to crack?

Anarchy ONline, Free to try, free to play for at least the rest of the year. www.funcom.com and best of all no pesky elfs.

rest of the year free? cool. I was a member there for like a year when it started, maybe I should check it out again. Maybe they fixed up all the crap probs they were having. I bet they lost a ton of users to WoW and DaoC and SWG and stuff so they decided to try offering a free year.

As for $15 a month, from what I've seen all the new MMORPGs are doing that. Unless you prepay a year in advance then you can get it slightly cheaper.

Will there be a monthly fee to play the game?
Yes. After the end of the free [...], you will need a subscription in order to continue playing the game. You have three options, as you will see when you create your account: a month-to-month package at $14.99 per month, a three-month plan at $13.99 per month, or a six-month plan at $12.99 per month. You can also substitute game cards, sold at major game retailers, for the monthly subscription.
Blizzards official answer.

Sweet deal BTW. I was in the closed beta, but never ended up buying cause I didn't have the money to shell out for the game. Now maybe I'll try it

So, its in September issue? What about august?

Is this not pertaining to the original FAQ, thus, about the retail copy?

Ah, I got that one last month. Perhaps the latest one hasn't reached newstands?

Sorry for making ya go out there for nothing. 🙁

its ok, we were out anyways 😀. You got me excited, because I want to try WoW without paying the 49.99 for whole game, and it better to try it for free for 14 days. hehe. I tired guild wars, so I wanted to try WoW since I don't play FFXI online anymore. So its confirmed its the September version. awesome!

Actually as much as companies would LIKE MMORPG to all be subscription, I suspect its a dying trend. Guild Wars is pay once, and the ad supported model seems like it might work too.

Does anyone know when the September issues hits stores? I actually bought the game last week but didn't open it so I'm planning on returning it and buying the magazine.

Good deal! The 10 day trial key requires purchase of the full retail version to continue playing, in addition to subscription fees.

This is what confuses me, I got the 10 day key (and used it up already) but couldnt upgrade without purchasing a retail version.

Is the version on this game upgradable to full without purchasing the retail CDs? I would like a clear answer to that (and I think others are as well)

If so, I will probably hunt down a copy tomorrow somewhere.

"Play WoW for up to 14 days FOR FREE! And if you decide you like the game, simply keep playing and your credit card will be charged on a monthly basis going forward.
You get the FULL retail game with a FULL CD Key. You need only pay the monthly subscription cost.

I honestly just cannot believe this. It sells so well, why would they want to do this?

Guild Wars is not, and does not play like, an MMORPG. I have played Guild Wars (love it), I have played WoW (Very enjoyable). Simply put, if I want an action rpg that has large, social aspects, I will play GW. If I want an MMO, I will play WoW.

Coincidentally, I will be playing both, because they're of different gametypes ;p

Thus, I do not agree. I think it's a trend that may very well extend into other gametypes, mostly when other gametypes extend into MMOs (Planetside being a very early example of what I expect to see in the future).

why not? Its the monthly costs that pay for any MMORPG, not the retail game. Otherwise they wouldn't charge a monthly. So this just increases subscriber base. No company refuses an increase in its subscriber base 🙂 And I imagine most of the retail cost doesn't even go to blizzard. It goes to pay for distribution, and for vivendi's cost (or whoever was the publisher I cant remember), and the game retailer keeps some etc. Most $50 games, the developer is lucky to make $10-$15 per copy, and in this case that just pays the first free month. Plus, PC Gamer probabably talked them into doing it (maybe even paid them some money?) as an "Exclusive" to increase thier magazine sales. And guess what, its working if the replies here are any judge.

This is exactly what I wanted someone to say, a no-nonsense summary to the differences between the two. Thanks r0bVious 😀 I just want a online RPG that's fun!

Only problem being that, at least to me personally, the game wasn't all that fun and it's so ugly to look at, hehe.

Guild Wars is diablo-esque. It doesn't have quite the scope of a big development MMORPG and it doesn't have the overhead that requires a montly subscription fee. So I doubt it is dying trend. If you ever see a game that is actually like Everquest 2/World of Warcraft/etc. that is free, then maybe.

Odds are you never will either. Unless its a MMORPG thats never updated and no new content ever added. You have to pay hardware and bandwidth costs and thats just the start. You have to constantly keep teams of developers adding stuff and fixing stuff and maintaining game. And paid GM's if you want the game to run smoothly. Etc etc. There's a ton of costs involved. As you can see by all the MMORPGs that have died.

Guild wars is nothing like an MMORPG. The only massively multiplayer aspect is the city, which is just battlenet in 3d.

There is major difference between a massive world with 7500 players, and a city where everyone gathers to play 16-32 player games together.

I gave up my crack habit to play WOW.

I am currently paying $11.50/month after buying 4x 60 day cards for $22.99 each at amazon.com when they were on sale.

Has anybody seen that issue on newsstands yet? or is it just subscribers getting it currently.

I checked today, and the newest issue I could find is July.

i just checked and i could only find the August issue..maybe we gotta wait til august to get the september mag..NOOO!
