Well, I've provided verification in terms of what the actual cd says on it. I have it in my hands right here. Here is the exact small print:

Your unique authetication code good for 14 days of World of Warcraft gameplay is located in the white box at the left. In order to begin playing, you will need to create a "Free Trial" account, including your credit-card information. Your credit card will not be charged for this 14-day trial period. To continue the adventure beyond the Free Trial, purchase a retial copy of World of Warcraft and play for an additional 30 free days. Only after this period will monthly fees be applied to your credit card. An internet connection is required to play.

There you go folks. Again, I'm going by what is on the actual CD slip case. What's weird is that they ask for a credit card even though it's free... so it *MIGHT* be possible to just continue playing. But I have no clue, as I haven't activated my trial yet.

I got some info from the message boards on pcgamer and someone replied that you do have to buy the retail game to continue playing.

my friend gave me his 10 day trial and i had to put in a credit-card also.
but once the 10-day trial was over I had to put in a retail cd key to continue playing...can't just keep paying.

Sorry I didn't reply last night, but I was too busy playing!

This deal is legit. The text above is on the CD slipcase as well as on the install screen. Guess you guys just gotta keep calling your local bookstore until they get it in. This is awesome. Free Game.

Atomics, how is the deal legit if the text above is for real? Note the part about the "buying a retail copy".

I refuse to believe they're giving it out. And to be honest, I know I'm right.

wait so it IS possible to just keep playing off this DVD? There are so many different repsonses its confusing me haha

Well right now there are to contradicting statements. On the actual VD in the description of the 14 day trail it says:
"Play WoW for up to 14 days FOR FREE! And if you decide you like the game, simply keep playing and your credit card will be charged on a monthly basis going forward."
Atmoics has verified this text shows up on the install screen.

However, what LivinLaVivaPollo pointed out, on the slipcase it the fine print reads
"Your unique authetication code good for 14 days of World of Warcraft gameplay is located in the white box at the left. In order to begin playing, you will need to create a "Free Trial" account, including your credit-card information. Your credit card will not be charged for this 14-day trial period. I didn't even see this text until LivinLaVivaPollo mentioned it and even then it took me a minute to find it.

I'm going to contact PCGamer and Blizzard today and find out what the deal is. Sorry for wasting anyone's time, but I suspect that I'm not the only one who could have been mislead by this.

I have a stagnant account at the moment since when I played, no one I knew played also so I quit. It would be nice if these DVDs allow you to continue playing without buying retail copy. Has anyone tried going into the account and billing section on the website and entering a two month gamecard. It would show the extended time in the detailed section, wouldn't it?

Thus verifying or denying that the DVD can be used instead of retail copy.

There's an AT guild, link and info was posted earlier in this thread (thats where I learned about it)

Much appreciated. Let us know what the deal is!

Sorry, I guess I shouldn't have quoted him directly. To clear the confusion:

The sleeve does say something about buying a retail copy to play another 30 days. BUT, the install screen does NOT. It states "Play WoW for up to 14 days FOR FREE! And if you decide you like the game, simply keep playing and your credit card will be chraged on a monthly basis going forward." That is directly from the install screen on the DVD.

If any of you have seen the install screen from the retail copy, it looks identical. I think it's the same code, copied onto PCGamer's disc. Here's a pic of the PCGamer screen and the actual WoW install screen.

[EDIT] Removed pics to save bandwidth.

I got this and installed it. the account setup said i just had to play a monthly fee after the 14 days were up, but according to the account management page i have to purchase a retail copy and put in the cdkey before I will be able to continue playing, and that really sucks

I have sent my email to blizzard, so hopefully i will get a favorable response. I would hate to think i wasted $8 on the stupid trial.

would be even more pissed if I had to recreate my account when i got the retail version, losing the progress ive made already 🙁

Yes, you'll have to buy the retail copy. You then enter in the product key while in the account management area.

No, you do not need to start over.

Anyone who believes what PCG put on their own little install screen OVER what Blizzard actually says, might as well send their $9 to me 😀

Um not to mean this badly but how could you have had this for 14 days already? That would mean you received your magazine on the 6 or before.

Except what it was was just the install copied from retail. As far as I know, its blizzard's retail install screen that they didn't bother to modify before letting PCG have it. Its all based on the CD keys. If you use a trial key it makes you purchase the retail. If you use a retail cd key, you are set. In either case you have to pay the monthly fee to play at all.

Probably he's a subscriber. They often get the issue mailed to them way in advance of when the stores have it.

BTW, did everyone see that press release that blizzard did? They are now the #1 MMORPG in the world. 3.5 million customers total and of those, 1.5 million accounts from China from thier recent release there (though you gotta wonder how many of those accounts are farmers selling gold and stuff on ebay).

They probably make more money farming gold in the game than they do in real life. I just got back from China, and people there are poor beyond belief. Average salary works out to about $100 USD a month. If you make $10,000 USD a year, you're considered very high income. Kinda puts a damper on the whole "China's the next superpower" thing. They've still got a very, very long way to go.
