Big Fight: After Alex Rodriguez was hit by a pitch in the third inning, he began shouting at Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo. Jason Varitek stepped in, and A-Rod shouted a favorite four-letter epithet at the catcher before challenging him to fight. Varitek went at him, and both benches cleared. A-Rod and Varitek were ejected; Tanyon Sturtze, the Yankees' starting pitcher in this game, got a choke hold on Red Sox outfielder Gabe Kapler, and by the time their scrap was over, Sturtze had hurt his pinky and had a cut on the left side of his face -- an injury that appeared to have been caused by Boston DH David Ortiz.

Classy.

Hope he gets an extra 5 days.

lol, you people amuse me to no end. ARod will be getting the 5 days for instigating the fight. It's typical of you Yankee backers to highlight that Ortiz tidbit, but seemingless let the fact that A-Rod shouted a favorite four-letter epithet at the catcher before challenging him to fight go un-noticed in the backround. There's your 5 days right there.

Rodriguez instigated the fight by ... being in the way of that inside pitch?

This grows tiring...

You're right, it's tiring trying to pound into someone's head that, yes, he got hit by a pitch, on the elbow, and he instigated a fight afterwards. What about that can you not comprehend? What effort did he make to get out of the way of the pitch? How can you not see this?

the way i see it, the batter before Arod, Sheff, grounded into a dp, that caused the game to be 3 - 0, Arod came up and was thrown a pitch inside, the next pitch hits him, seemed very intentional but not conclusive to be blatent. Arod starts swearing and eyeing down the pitcher, and they trade 4 letter words. Then, Varitek, kind of starts to escort Arod to first and gets in his face and instigates teh bench clearing brawl by first physical contact.

i would say varitek is most responsible, then arod, then the boston pitcher.

How can you not see that the sux instigated the physical contact? And when it didn't work, they just did it again, because who wants to play baseball when you can vent your frustration at sucking by turning the game into a jerry springer style circus?

Ok, let me break this down to you soccer-mom Yankee fans that don't know the game of baseball:
Arroyo is 2nd in the AL in hit batsmen. The Sox were down 3-0 at the time. Poor time to put a runner on base on purpose, don't you think?

Wow, are you the umpire that was standing between Tek and Arod, because you seem to know exactly what was said by both Arroyo and Arod. The only thing that you can say that was said is "F-You, F-You, F-You, C-Mon", by ARod, and motioning with his hands to bring it, which Tek did. Watch the tape again there buddy, you're clearly blinking and not seeing the whole thing.

well, sheff did ground into a dp right before, and yanks did come up 3-0 on that play, plus the pitch before came close to hitting arod also...

facts:
What i am saying is that YOU or I do not know if it was intentional or not.
Arod started swearing and trading words with the pitcher after he got hit and with varitek..
Varitek, (although you might say protecting his pitcher) starts physical contact

Arod was not going to charge the mound and start physical contact, so varitek should have left the situation as it is..

Because of this varitek is Most at fault, then by default Arod would be next

words does not equal physical contact, that should be clear to you, try to be objective...

do you see any fault in Tek? or Arroyo?

Edit: i am not a yanks or bosox fan, just a fan of the game

What's so funny is you know as well as I do (well, that or you have trouble tying your shoes in the morning) that it was intentional. You just can't admit it as it hurts your entire argument ;)

Lol this is a funny read.

Arroyo may or may not have hit Arod intentionally..but it looked to me like he was trying to take the inside part of the plate plus he is one of the leaders in hit batsmen. Oh well..

Given that, Arod was the one that instigated most of it repeatedly cursing and Varitek etc etc. Someone keeps saying "Fvck you" and then says "Come on!"---maybe some of you ATOT'ers would back down (or perhaps let him steal your bike), but Varitek wasn't going to take that sh!t.

Great game, and hopefully this is the Red Sox's wake up call.

By the way, if any of you are fans worth a d@mn for either team you know there has been a long history of fights and high emotions. This is nothing new..

Oh and your attempts to use the word classy describing anyone or either team is laughable.

You may proceed getting dirt kicked in your face.

I doubt that you're right... Really the worst that could have been said is "get the f* to 1st," or something. ARod instigated it by egging Vari on like that. As far as Varitek stepping in like he did, that's what a catcher is supposed to do... Protect the pitcher. He did nothing wrong there. And I still blame ARod; telling me that the Red Sox are the hotheads in this situation isn't going to do anything to change that.
Duh everyone, it's the catchers job to protect the pitcher. A pitcher should never have to take verbal abuse like that. I mean, A-Rod swore at him for crying out loud (TWICE EVEN!!), there was obviously nothing left for Veritek to do but to start a brawl.

Typical Rude Sux, they gang up on one guy and then hit him when he is on the ground with a sucker punch. Fenway Punks for sure! What was even funnier during the brawl Petey Martinez was searching for Don Zimmer!

I dunno if anybody has commented on this, but it was ARod who started the fight. He said F U twice, Varitek stepped in, then ARod basicablly said "bring it"... And Varitek did (I woulda liked to have seen that fight play out, Vari is a beast). I'll admit, the Sox have started stuff in the past, but this was all ARod.

And IIRC, it wasthe Yankees pitching coach who charged the mound last year and he got fvcked up by Pedro. The Yankees clearly cannot fight the Red Sox; I wonder why Arod started a fight at all.

What a fool to fight someone wearing catchers gear. Of course you are gonna get owned.

While Ramirez' actions there are not at all admissable, I thought it was generally accepted that Manny turned away and, having no view of the pitch, went on sound... The pitch was high and towards Manny's head. Almost certainly not intentional, but Manny apparently didn't know it.
Agreed. Clemens hardly seems be someone to shy away from physical contact considering he threw a bat at Mike Piazza.

I think its pretty obvious from the videos that Varitek was talking smack while arod was walking down the line. But only retarded sox fans don't realize this. Thank god everyone up here stopped with the this is our year sh!t, its gets kind of old.

I hope the above is just bad sarcasm.

I'm sure it is obvious that Varitek was talking smack because you can see him mouthing words so clearly with his FVCKING mask on .

You are either poor at sarcasm, blind or a YES Network lacky.

Just suspend both teams for the remainder of the year and ban them from the playoffs for the next 10 seasons (that might actually be a good thing for the Red Sox ;) )

I think that's good enough for the rest of us.

Great game, good win for the Sox. They touched up Mariano for 3 runs, gotta hand it to them. They beat the best the Yanks had to offer today. The brawl obviously go tthem fired up.

RED SOX NATION IS STRONGER THAN EVER

Wow stop posting. Foulke couldn't choke that bad? He lost the game the night before. Pedro lost the game for them last year. Asskicking? Are you serious? Hey why don't you take your trash talking to another thread. Get your facts straight. Haha Red sox nation is stronger than ever? This is pure GOLD. Just last week you were all booing Nomar, just yesterday you were questioning your manager's decisions, and just an hour before winning the game, you were wondering how much more asskicking the Red Sox could handle. Please, didn't your mommy tell you not to drink your beer too fast, it can make you dillusional.
