I tried that. According to MS it should have worked. Didn't, so I installed WMP 9.
Any tricks on this stuff? I'll be formatting within the month, so I get to do it all over again.

i use wmp 6.4 for everything except asf and wma because wmp 9 is the only thing that will let you seek fast with those formats for some reason

and you can use older versions for certain types of files you just have to associate it and remove the association in WMP 9 itself

i also like the mp3 tagging functionality though i use QCD player as the mp3 player

um...I have everything nice and organized outside of media library; a directory on my server where WMP rips WMA to (yes I use WMA 😛), organized by artist with album subdirectories. Multiple computers on the network use WMP Media Library monitoring tool to monitor the directory and update themselves automatically when new albums are added. Whenever I play music from any pc, it is nice and organized, with correct song names, artist info, album info, and album cover art...with little to no work on my part, except for inserting a CD and walking away.

Now if you're a thief and download music and then have to organize it manually and fix all the problems with filenames and ID3 tags from idiots who don't use a standard naming convention, I can understand how this is all just one big hassle. :brokenheart: But for people, like me, who rip and store music from their own cd's, it's a godsend.

And bloat? Who cares, all the PC's on my network have at least 1GHz processors...WMP9 runs like nothing.

The seek feature in WMP9 is so much faster then the old one.. on my 2100+ I can see a huge difference between how it use to work and now when I skip halfway through a long movie. I wouldnt give that up.

It's the best. The fastest to load, etc.

Both, actually, over 90% CDs, and amount of rip-offs is growing smaller with actually getting the CDs.

You're doing something wrong. WMP9 opens up instantly on the XP1600 system I'm on right now.

I just compared WMP9 to MPC with 3 different videos. They were equal on CPU usage, but MPC used about twice the memory. Strangely, CPU usage shot up if the video was minimized in either player.

I use and like WMP9. Haven't had any problems with it and i love the ability to minimize to the toolbar.

only using wmp9 for some formats (wm-stream stuff) else using bsplayer for about everything video-related and winamp for sound-stuff. oh and then there is real one for rms and qt6 pro for movs. not to forget power-dvd for dvds and vcds... is that it? ... i think so...

WMP runs great for me. The library is awesome on it. There's no need to manually put everything into separate folders and such. I have just one folder with all my MP3's. WMP opens instantly and runs great. Plays all movies w/o a problem or anything. Hardly uses any memory or much CPU power. If you seriously have a problem with how much memory or CPU it uses, upgrade your piece of crap to something made within the last 5 years. I don't ever use the skin mode though, so I don't know about that issue. I just minimize it.

I agree wiht Werk, WMP9 opens instantly, not lag at all. Not to mention my system is hovering around 2% cpu usage with it playing an MP3 right now. YOu're doing something wrong.

It appears it doesnt like something in your system. Be it the soundcard drivers, maybe something about your bios? Do you have onboard audio?

All my WMP 9 load instantly and are rock stable.

Not sure... but you're doing something wrong. It opens instantly for me as well on a XP1600 system.

...but what? Installed it from Windows Update, and had it install most everything, then just took it off the desktop and quick launch, and had it use the "classic" skin.

0-3% is about normal w/ Winamp, AIM, RivaTuner, MBM, Norton AV, etc. on and running.
But Winamp comes up instantly, and WA3 isn't as slow as WMP 9 is. Will be trying MPC.

It appears it doesnt like something in your system. Be it the soundcard drivers, maybe something about your bios? Do you have onboard audio?

The BIOS stuff should be fine. AK35GT2 with onboard CMI 8738, using the latest Win2k drivers.
