Nice! Finally got Win 10 installed. And with this 6 year old triple-core AMD desktop and Samsung 850 Evo, it's pretty snappy. And now it's completely silent too.

It initially booted up with the generic MS display driver, but after the first log-in, it downloaded the appropriate nVidia 9200 driver. Yes, my AMD desktop has an onboard nVidia GPU.

Now all I need is a new low-profile USB 3 card. What is the MOST COMPATIBLE USB 3 card with a low profile bracket? My previous D-Link from 2011 would cause serious glitches in Win 7, so I've since removed it. I don't think there are any updated drivers for it either, for Win 10.

I have used startech cards pretty well, on win 7, win 10 the should work just as well as the usb 3 stack is built into windows
Thanks for reminding me. I installed the old 2011 D-Link USB 3 card back in and so far it seems to work fine, with no extra drivers.

The problem with the card in Windows 7 was likely the third party drivers. Unstable. Seems perfectly stable in Windows 10. Excellent. 🙂

Is there any new word on when Redstone will be released? I keep seeing the end of this month on the anniversary date being kicked around but that was posted several months ago.

August 2nd.

Just to clarify.

In few weeks there would be a release called the Windows 10 Anniversary Release.

http://www.howtogeek.com/248177/whats-new-in-windows-10s-anniversary-update/

Redstone 2 which is a Major Big update would occur only in Feb. or March of 2017.

😎

When Windows 10 came out last year I thought it was usable but far too rough around the edges. I had numerous problems on various machines, not the least of which was the complete inability to create additional local user accounts through the Windows 10 metro interface. I had to use admin configuration parts of Win 10 (which are holdovers from previous versions of Windows) to create local user accounts. The Metro interface simply completely refused to work for me for this purpose, for two different Win 10 machines.

Obviously, this was fixed later, along with a lot of other things, and the 1511 release is a big improvement. Edge still needs work though, and I can't use it as a primary browser.

I'm looking forward to Redstone 1 / Anniversary edition, but it's interesting they chose August 2 as the release date, as that's just 2 business days after the end of the free Win 10 updates from Win 7/8. A lot of the stuff in Redstone 1 makes it look like a Windows 10.5 version, with the July 2015 official release being a mid-beta and 1511 being a late beta.

ie. I wouldn't have necessarily have recommended any Win 10 release before 1511 as an upgrade if the Win 7/8.1 machines were working fine, but 1511 is decent enough to recommend. It would have be nice to have the free update include an update straight to the Redstone 1 / Anniversary Update though. Can't complain though. I never thought my 2010 el-cheapo desktop would get MS support - for no additional cost - until 2015. Same goes for my 2009 laptop and my 2009 nettop.

Nope. Yesterday after half a day with the card installed, my wife found the computer unresponsive and with the fan in vacuum cleaner mode.

I took out the USB 3 card, and it's been fine since. Hmmm...

After literally 10+ attempts I got Win10 to work on my ASUS N61JQ laptop. I found a couple of posts online that said my problems were most likely due to an incompatability with the NIC - the fix is to disable it. I did, and Win10 has worked great; no more random freezes.

Also a week or two ago I upgraded my mother-in-law's laptop from Win7 to Win10. The upgrade could not have gone smoother, as contrasted with the nightmare that my laptop was.

I wonder what the load will be like in the next day or so, and if the activation servers can handle the strain?

What happens if you installed it, but can't activate it? I would guess you are SOL.

The Official Win 10 released today

Beside the Upgrade through the online Update there are independent install files for ISO/DVD and USB/Flash Drive.

The release have versions of Home and Pro x86 and x64.

Also Home N and Pro N available.

It is on Microsoft site here - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I making this as a Sticky for members to offer help and advice in fresh install and upgrades.

Please stick to technical content and do not turn it to a Thread of FUDs, Silly Fan Boyish comments, or any other useless content.

----------------------------------------
Edit 1 - Very Important.

While I do not know what the Future holds, at the moment the Activation server would Not take any key that is Not Win 10 per-se.

I.e., if One does fresh Install and have genuine legal version appropriate Win 7 key, there is No way to use this key to activate fresh Win 10.

The current way to go about it, is to Install plain vanilla Win 7 activate it, and the do an In-place Upgrade to Win 10 using the download DVD.

When One Activates the new Win 10 installation, the Activation server should be able to sense the legal Win 7 key and issue and Activated Win 10.

It is is an additional hour of work. But at the moment it seems to be the most viable solution for fresh install.

😎

Edit (July 30 Morning): The reality of the last two days shows better success in Upgrading (In-place or fresh Install) with DVD/Flash Drive rather than counting on ""Internet traffic"".

Step By Step instructions.

Step 1. Image*** the current Win7/8 Installation to an External Computer/Drive.

Step 2. Download and make a DVD/Flash Drive of the compatible version of Win 10.

Step 3. Use the DVD/Flash drive to do In-place Upgrade to the current Win7/8.

Step 4. When the Upgrade is done Make sure that every thing is OK and Activated by looking at the Control Panel/System screen.

Step 5. use a Key Finder to find the Activated Key of Win 10 (many freeware choices - http://pcsupport.about.com/od/productkeysactivation/tp/topkeyfinder.htm ).

------------------------------------------------------
At this point One should have functional computer running Win 10 with all your Win 7/8 content.

If One want Fresh install Continue with the following Steps.

----------------------------------------------------

Step 6 (optional) Make an Image*** of the working Win 10 In-Place upgrade (if the fresh install does not work, image back the In-place install and you would have Win 10 system to "play" with until the current issues are resolved).

Step 7. Boot from the Win 10 DVD/Flash drive and make a Fresh Install.

Use the saved Win 10 key to Activate the Fresh Install. *****

*** I use Acronis TI 2015, it takes 8 Minutes to image full installation of Windows 7/10.

***** I tried it on few installations and while it worked on two computers other two rejected the save Win 10 Keys.

As mentioned in few post, at the moment it is hard to make a judgement about what works or Not because of the Land on the Activation Servers and general confusion with part of the process. Hopefully in the near future these issues would be resolved.

.
Oh, Thanks for good information.
I have updated!

As long as it the same version of Win 10 and it is imaged to a physical computer that was once activated with similar Win 10, it will recognize it and Activated.

😎

I changed the settings on my 3 primary pc's to start getting the insider builds. I went conservative on my desktop and tablet with preview and slow ringed my laptop. When I feel a bit more confident I'll fast ring it to get the latest build.

Something weird about this thread. Jack's OP says the preview of 1703 is in post #413, but I only see... #410, 411, 412, and then ANOTHER 412, and then 414 and following.

Why are there two post #412 in this thread, and no #413?

As leaks over the past week or so indicated, there is now a new option for users to pause updates for up to 35 days in this build.

Yeah, the 35 days would be an option.

But... Only to Pro, Ent., Educ., versions. The Millions that upgraded from Win 7 Home Premium, or got Win 10 Home would not benefit from it.
