I restarted my upgrade at 8am today. After 5 hours it is at 99% after moving roughly 1% per half hour after passing 90%. GG microsoft... It might have something to do with this being a virtually fresh win 7 install. There are well over 100 updates that it wants to download, but my thinking is why update it with win 7 patches when it is updating to win 10 which probably has all those patches already? At any rate I am now stuck wondering if this thing is even going to finish after a full 8 hour day. It hasnt even begun the actual installation yet. It is only 99% done with "Getting your upgrade ready"
Ok guess I'm getting no help on this one.
Since your 7 is a clean install why not use the media creation tool and clean install 10 using all available updates?
I.e., if One does fresh Install and have genuine legal version appropriate Win 7 key, there is No way to use this key to activate fresh Win 10.
The current way to go about it, is to Install plain vanilla Win 7 activate it, and the do an In-place Upgrade to Win 10
Should this work with all installs? I had a clone of a freshly installed Win 10 for my laptop lying around and I'm wanting to upgrade my desktop to Win 10 too. So on a lark I just installed the drive in the desktop and it worked after it did some auto-configuration, to my surprise. If you have the 7 key you can clean install 10 using it with the latest updates that allow for it. The original release didn't have this function which is now available with the updates which is why you should always get all available updates to an OS when performing an upgrade/clean installation. It works the same way regardless for both32/64 bit versions. I have to use the 32 bit on my tablet even though the hardware is 64 bit so I understand where you're coming from. If you have any questions post them and we'll try to answer them for you and good luck with your installation.
If you're current upgrade is successful just keep this information in mind for future reference and if it fails you know what to do to get around it. I had issues with my tablet not wanting to upgrade from 8.1 to 10 that required me to use the media creation tool to perform the upgrade in lieu of windows update and it worked perfectly for me which is why I suggested using it. I've performed several upgrades (7, 8.1) using the media creation tool and I prefer it over WU because it does work around many issues that are present in the current OS, however it cannot overcome some like 3rd party utilities that might be causing conflict.
It didn't have the 1511 release. However, I initiated the update, which included the 1511 build. The update downloaded for a long time and then a long install and said it was updated, so I assumed 1511 was installed. Apparently that was not the case. The 1511 update was the last step and was taking a very long time to download, in the background.@Eug,
do you recall if the install on the drive you swapped was the 1511/November Release?
if not that could be why it did not work originally and only worked after the updates
Yep.Glad it worked out for you Eug and thanks for reporting back so others will be able to see the steps you went through. If all available updates were acquired during the installation process your 7 key should've worked up front which is what MS intended when the made the change. Since you were able to activate it you'll never have to use the key again when performing a clean installation on that hardware and can skip that step in the future which is super nice.
Is there any new word on when Redstone will be released? I keep seeing the end of this month on the anniversary date being kicked around but that was posted several months ago.

I like stealthing an SSD on the motherboard side of the case between the tray and that side panel.Dammit, the clone from the HD (55 GB partition) to the SSD (250 GB) didn't work. DOS Acronis 2015 failed, so then I installed the Windows version and that failed too. What a waste of cash.
As suggested, I'm just going to download the Win 10 ISO and reinstall to the SSD fresh.
EDIT:
Gotta love it. There is no way to mount an SSD in this particular case in the drive bay. I checked out five different 2.5" to 3.5" mounting brackets. None of them replicate all the mounting options of a hard drive, specifically, the four mounting holes on the bottom of 3.5" drives. So I guess I'll have to velcro it in or something, or use double sided foam tape.
