WIth the settings I like to play at (1920x1080, at least 2xAA and 8x AF, max eye candy), even a few older games like World In Conflict for example aren't as smooth as I want. This card even gets a hardcore workout on Neverwinter Nights 2. The noise of the fan gets pretty loud. I hate that. I have an E6750 at 3.4Ghz and 4gb of DDR2-1000 so maybe a quad would help. New video card comes 1st though.

Plus I got a ton of older Xbox/PS2/Gamecube games I missed out on that I'm playing so it's not like I'm in a hurry.

My fear is it won't be competitively priced. Sounds like those GPUs are gonna be expensive for Nvidia to produce. And Nvidia surely knows they have a pretty good and loyal following of customers that will pay extra just for Nvidia's name.

Heck, the GTX 285 is still selling for almost $400 and people are apparently buying them still. It seems Nvidia doesn't have to price competitively.
 
It was more of a rhetorical question. If many cards do become available at a decent price (e.g. equal to ATi in price/performance) then I will gladly eat my words.

I was really hoping to sell off my 5870 and get Fermi but seeing as we all know there's going to be supply issues, doesn't look like it's going to be cheap so sorry Nvidia, staying with ATI. Only reason why I bought a 5870 was that there was nothing else out there but am very happy with my first ATI card.
 
I vote other, because my choice depends wholly on what the price and performance are when it is released. (and what happens to the ATI prices as a result as well). I cannot predict it right now.
 
Buying at least one GTX 480 on launch day... I just put the 285 up on ebay. I've got an ASUS 5850 in my micro ATX 4.0GHz i5 rig to hold me over for the next week and a half... Got to have my Battlefield fix... 😀
 
Definitely wait. My 4850 is trucking along just fine thus far and there really aren't too many games that I play that seriously tax it (4v4 CoH definitely puts some strain on it, but that game brings damn near everything to its knees).

It was mentioned earlier and I agree with the philosophy of upgrading the GPU for $200 dollars or less for at least double the performance or more. The 5850 and the 285 are both cards that double the performance of my 4850 but are way out of my price range. the 5850 I have hope for, the 285 looks like a lost cause.

Fermi? That's anyone's god damn guess. While it looks to be a fine card from a gaming perspective, there are extraneous items that need to be addressed before I could commit.
 
To be honest, Fermi itself as will be released shortly, no way.... the GTX 480/470 are squarely aimed at the top end of the market and will probably have pricing to match. Despite all their talk of doing similar to AMD and trying to deliver a product for all market areas, there is little information on a lighter version of the GF100 series.

Additionally, I'd be waiting for their 'refresh' parts as some nvidia refreshes always seem to pack so much more of a punch compared to their first iterations (e.g. 9600 vs 8600 series), as well as fix the bugs in the architecture (think PureVideo on the 6800).

On a side note, is there any info anywhere on what nvidia's plans are for other lesser graphics products? I'm guessing the GTX 260/265 and higher will get a rebrand to something else and fill in the product line-up, but surely there must be some plan for a mid-range DX11 part??

Got myself a 930/6gb/Intel X25-M arriving tomorrow in wait to see how good it is.. (4780 will keep me going).

It'll either be a 5870 (maybe ATI will drop the price a bit) or the 480/470 but no way will I pre-order any peice of tech without a good review first. It'll have do a lot to convince me to drop more than £350 on the card....
 
I generally won't buy until I can get a nice midrange card for $200 or less. I got my GTX260 for around $155 over a year ago after mail-in rebate, when I can do that with a GTX460 or 470, I'll probably jump at that point. Paying over $200 for a videocard has always stuck me as a little crazy.
 
4890 is fine for now. Hoping to upgrade in maybe 9 mos. or so, either to like a cheap 5870/5850, or a new 6 series something if they're good. I doubt nvidia will have anything attractive out for me by then
 
my 4770 runs all the games that I want to play at 1680x1050. I'll skip this generation and go for ATI 6770 :hmm:
 
Unlike most people in this thread I'm a poster child for pent up demand. I'm the typical Steam survey sample -- 8800GT in my 3.8 ghz i7, 1920x1200 display and many games being run on low and medium settings. While I've been in desperate need of a GPU since about August of last year I'm not ready to be gouged.

You can get a 2nd 8800GT pretty cheap these days..... 😉

Surely that'll tide you over for a while.

8800GT 512M. Two of them won't really help except to run benchmarks at high res/high quality. Even if I had no problems with microstutter, input lag, failure to scale in games without a profile, no linux support, spotty windowed performance, idle power suck, need for a beefier PSU and so on.

Oh yeah, and I'm fairly sure my board doesn't support SLI.
