most likely will wait a few months, and I doubt I will go green this time, as I expect Fermi to OC poorly, thus a 480 would probably do worse than an OCed 5870 (or 5890?)
So I will probably end up getting an ATI 5850, 5870, or refresh eventually. Havent had an ATI card since the x1650 I used as a place holder when i built my first PCIE system till I could get an 8800. before that it was a 6800 GT, before that a radeon 7500 lol.

you know, I originally said "it depends on the price"... but now that I think about it, there is really no need to upgrade my card. Current games and my current resolution are simply not demanding enough to justify an upgrade.

so, regardless of price, what I have is "good enough".

I think that's changing very soon, BC2 is already a pig on older systems such as my E8400@3.9Ghz, even with an overclocked 5850, I can see how the fps dips to mid 50s at times using just 2xMSAA and 8xAF using just 1440x900. Having a Crossfire or SLI high end system is soon going to become a must for the extreme gamers. The 5850 will soon become obsolete in the next 6 months performance wise, sure it can overclock well, but it also is pretty loud with its fan...

Metro 2033 benchmarks have also just been released:

Clearly we will be looking at some expensive video card setups soon...

Fud is full of crap. On one had he posts that the boxes in photos are empty, on the other he claims his sources say the cards will have good availability at launch. Having covered all possible bases he can't be wrong now (unless the 480 retails for $500).

Pricing is now available. Fermi GTX480 to be priced $615 and €450.

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/18072/1/

Hmm... pretty much in line with the pre-order price here (maybe a bit cheaper).

Geforce GTX 470 to cost €349

So we are looking at a pretty happening $615 GTX480 and a $480 GTX470. Each card is priced slightly higher than it's rival, makes some what of sense to me. But this isn't exactly bad news I guess?

I'm looking forward to trying this game out when I get home tonight. Looking at this, and considering I game on a 30" there is no way I can max it out.

If it doesn't look better than Crysis though, I call it just being a badly coded pig. If it is better, then it may be necessary to upgrade :)

My processor is only an E4500 in a factory system, so I dont think I can overclock. Since I have a 9800GT already, I dont think I will upgrade the graphics card at all. I am probably close to being CPU limited as it is.

Unless you double up, or triple up on that 5770, you wouldn't be falling into the category that you just mentioned should be included. A year is even pushing it. 5770 is just about 4870 speed, and that is really going to be showing it's age this year. Now picture slapping DX11 support on that 4870. Just puts more hurting on it. IMHO

I've been an NVIDIA fan for sometime... I couldn't wait and bought a ATI 5870. To be honest, I could not be any happier at this time.

I finally have the funds to start my newest build, WC. I just don't want to wait that long to see if Fermi is any good, or hope to get a card. Also there is going to be another wait to get water-blocks for them as well and I want to be gaming well before that.

my 3x 4850's will hold me for another year

OTOH i might grab a 5850 or 5870 when prices dip a tad to replace the aging 3870 x-fire set-up

While I agree with your comment that DX11 may actually be a liability for the 5770, I am not so sure about 4870 becoming too slow in 2010.

Sure there is Metro 2033 and Stalker: Call of Pripyat, but that's just 2 games. Assassin's Creed 2, Bioshock 2 are easily handled by 4870. Even BF:BC2 still runs on 4870 without AA: http://www.legionhardware.com/articles_pages/battlefield_bad_company_2_tuning_guide,4.html

If AA is the primary concern, then yes, 4870 will become too slow. In a lot of games all you have to do is lower the shadow quality and get 10 frames.

i voted other, im still using my ati 3870. I know i need to upgrade but really in no hurry too. I really play to many demanding games these days to warrant a video card upgrade. I just play final fantasy 11, simcity 4, WoW, lord of the rings online. I may upgrade for final fantasy 14 though depending on how that runs on my system

I am really on the edge on whether I will buy in this generation. But if I do, i will be building a micro-atx machine and hooking it into my big screen downstairs replacing my Dell Precision Laptop. Thus I would keep my 4850 on my computer upstairs but buy a 470 for a new machine.

I think now that Fermi is out, and will be officially in 1.5 hrs from now, at 3pm PST, we should vote on this thread once more!

This is what I've done:

Ordered a Asus 5970 today
Bought a Asus 5870 and Asus 5850 in Feb and March

No plans for Fermi upgrades.

AT Review: "The price gap between it and the Radeon 5870 is well above the current performance gap"

Bingo, Nvidia may have the fastest single GPU out now, but not by much, and there are tons of trade offs for just a little bit more FPS over the Radeon 5870. High heat/noise/power for what? Over 90% of gamers play at 1920 X 1200 resolution or less, so even just a Radeon 5850 or Crossfired 5770's are the best bang for the buck.

If all your going to play at is 1920 X 1200 or less, I see no reason why educated people would want to buy a GTX 470/480 after reading all the reviews for Fermi today. Way to expensive and way to hot for not much of a performance gain.

I ain't buying anything. My GTX260 is still a decent card and SC2 runs very smoothly. That's all I care now.

I am not even a fan of $400+ cards. Will probably never buy one at that price.
