it is a well written series that people are anxious to know how it ends.

Each book is quite different from the rest. Yes, we know it will end in a showdown of some sort, but that is no different than knowing that Frodo will end up at mount doom in LoTR.

It is the storytelling of how they get to that point which makes it great. I was in your shoes a couple of years ago, the people who loved HP that I knew were people I didn't really like so I was turned off by the whole thing.
Then, I decided to give it a shot and read books 1-5, and have been hooked since(this was before book 6 came out).

I actually don't know 1 person that has read through at least book 4 that doesn't like the series.

Well by saying you don't know anyone that hasn't read through the 1st 4 books, that's like saying, I don't know anyone that hasn't been to 400 Yankee games that isn't a fan.

My GF reads the HP books, and wanted me to read it. I can't read something with the ludicrous childish names that are plastered all through it. I think I read 2 pages and gave up. Plus I'm not real big on the whole "chosen one" syndrome. I like my heroes to be someone that is just doing their thing and get caught in a bad spot. Kinda like John McClaine in the Die Hard movies.

Man I was so with you until you brought up Die Hard! =p

it's partly because they're a pretty good read (even for adults whose reading level isn't where it should be) and partly because it's an Event.

But, but, Snape kills Dumbledore! :D

meh, secondary character and even that took 8 or 9 books to get to

umm...you can say that for pretty much 99% of every movie or book out there...there are plenty of times where major things have happened to the main characters.

Yes, which is fine for a book but a long going series gets a bit boring when the worst thing that happens to any of the main characters is they get a scratch.

Exactly. I just find these books to be only designed for children, but surprises me the amount of adults that love it

well, people like the idea of magic and the idea that good prevails and since we live in a world where there really isnt any possibility of magic or really even amazing events that truly suprise people seek out fantasy, kinda depressing in a way.

Good call, definitely depressing. I think it also falls along the same lines of people that go to Star Trek conventions.

Another "A lot of people are enjoying something so I need to bring them down" thread.

Good for them if they enjoy it. i have read a few HP books. They are not that bad, but I just dont understand the extreme hype surrounding it and for that matter any movie. I.e people that camp out for weeks outside of theaters and such. Maybe I should have directed the topic more that way.

Well, I've not read the books and I've seen 3 of the 5 movies. I've also been bored enough to read the Wikipedia entries about it. Now I wonder why it is you feel that the books are for kids? Is it because the main character is young? Well the main character grows up, the books start getting darker, and major characters start dying. I know the one thing I can say I like about the book is how well flushed out the magic is. I don't know of any other mythology with as well designed magic system except for D&D.

I can agree with the magic part. They have done a good job with that. I mean kids wise, because the ending of each book is the same. Voldemort vs. Harry and a lot of filler, maybe I am being too critical of it.

But like i mentioned earlier, I think I have should have stated the topic differently. Like why be an extreme fan?

WOW - I'm so glad someone had the guts to start a thread like this. My 9 year old son is very in to Harry Potter. I think that is great. He wants to see the movies too, which I think is great. Is a book written on a 4th grade level also written for adults? I don't think so. I started to watch one of the Harry Potter movies with my son one evening and will have to admit, after about 15 minutes I was bored senseless and could not quite understand what my 9 year old found so fascinating. It appears to me that adults are reverting back to their 4th and 5th grade childhood with these stories and want to be found 'KOOL' with the younger group. Just my opinion.

Not a bad thought. Kids can definitely be watching a lot worse stuff, so I am glad your son is into it.

Why be an extreme fan of Star Wars? It's the same concept- good vs. evil, magical forces and skills, epic battles, adventure...

The characters draw an emotional response, so that's going to trigger enjoyment from a wide range of people. Very simple.

Fritzo - Extreme to me means dressing up in costumes, going to conventions, camping out at the theater, etc..

I just find it strange and wanted some insight into this. I have never done any of the above, so maybe its fun... Trying to find out

It is fun for the people who do it. I don't have a problem with it, and because of people being very critical of them, it actually takes guts to do that. Yeah, some take it a little too seriously, but hey if its all in the spirit of fun and enjoyment, then I don't see anything wrong with it.

Yes, there are quite a bit of people who do have boring lives and doing stuff like this adds some excitement. Is that a good or bad thing? I don't think its either.

Im 18. I grew up with these books. When you think about it, some of the older people werent so old when these books started.

And there great books too. Ive read a lot of other books, but I keep coming back to these.

The story is written for children and young adults with an imagination. If you don't like it, don't participate! Nobody is forcing you to do anything...so quit your whining.

interesting that you changed your view from "Everyone that reads HP is a Idiot especially if they are adults" to "well, I've read one before and it was ok" to "I liked the idea of magic and it was interesting" to "Really I'm just trying to understand people and why they act the way they do"

Why do people like Harry potter? Why do people like computer, Star Trek, Big Brother, House, or anything else? If you ask me some of the story lines on TV right now are pretty childish as well and yet people love it "Billy said yes to kara but then he didn't do what he said he would so I'm voting him off the show". Someone nailed it on the head, it triggers and emotional response. It helps that the books where well writen and somewhat unpredictable.

Yes the ending is known, but isn't the ending known in just about any movie? If you went to see spiderman 3 did you expect spiderman to end up dead? When you went to watch invisible did you expect the guy to get cut from the team? When you went to see Cinderella man did you expect the main character to just die or quit before the end? Nope, but you still went to watch the movie because you wanted to see how he made it, and even some of the times that he failed. Very few good movies end with the hero failing or losing to the villain, and yet every time you watch a movie wanting to see HOW it happens no what will happen.

Just because something is written simply for a child to read does not mean it is not interesting to an adult. There are already some adult overtones in the book that I think some children might not grasp as well. So, so what if an adult reads the book, aren't you a bit old to criticize people for what they do or how they act? As an adult you should be able to grasp the concept that what interests me does not interest you. Last time I remember people making fun of others for what they do was back in the 3rd grade, Honestly the only one the is being childish is you.

George RR Martin's ASoIaF.

There's a guy with some writing skills. Now if he'd get off his ass and finish the series. :|
