im sorry, i have to pay for everything (tuition, gas, insurance, bills, etc) so its not like i can afford everything i see. im fortunate enough to have a place to stay and some food to eat at home.

goddamn, seriously..$5 may not be worth much to you guys, but it is to me. wow.

edit: to clarify: ipod was my birthday present from my family, touch pro i got for free after all my credits and some convincing with sprint retentions.

nintendo wii was given to me by my girlfriend and i bought the ps3 as a gift for myself last summer because i had a circuit city gift card and the 60GB dropped in price so effectively i got it for even cheaper.

desktop is my moms desktop because she trades and my brother picked the parts out.

htpc is dead as of yesterday.

Now, I was a big time iPhone hater the first generation, and with good reason. It lacked pretty much ALL of the advanced features of other smartphones, while charging a big premium. They fixed a lot of this with the 3G version - although its still lacking a lot of stuff, they did add a lot of big features they lacked (3G, GPS, Exchange) and halved the price. However, I still wouldn't buy one.

and the biggest reason is that AT&T charges you up the wall for the iphone 3G. i would have bought it if you didnt have to get a contract with AT&T/you could unlock it to tmobile.

Someone else posted the prices, and I don't see why you're saying this. With T-mobile you'd get 600 minutes + unlimited data for $40+$25. With AT&T it's $40+$30 for 450+unlimited data. T-mobile is a slightly better deal, but it's hardly a difference worth fretting about.

i use the "desktop" that my family bought parts for after my brothers recommendation so doesnt that mean at all i own it. i just use it when i come home from school in the night and even then, thats after my mom finishes her other work on it, otherwise, i always do my computer work at school, not at home. i dont own any of my computers and i dont even have one myself. the "htpc" is the same way...and in fact, as of yesterday it died thanks to a faulty mobo. i built them yes, but i dont own them in anyway.

as for my ipod, i bought a 30GB video a few years ago but its been broken since 2006 and my family kindly bought me it for my birthday a few weeks ago. i am very grateful for that and i never ask for anything on my birthday, nor do i expect anything either.

ps3? i bought that myself because the 60GB models were going away and the price dropped by $100, and i also had a CC gift card to use. it was a gift to myself because i had worked overtime and got a new job.

the gf got a nintendo wii for both of us, so i thank her immensely for that.

and sprint sero...around $30 after loyalty discounts and everything. it pays to know people personally from sprint, being nice to the reps, and have good negotiating skills.

i pay for all of my expenses, including tuition, insurance, gas, food (during when im at school), ipass charges, and whatever else. im lucky to not pay for housing.

so yes, $5 is worth it to me, especially when it comes to bills. anything less i have to pay/owe is a good thing.

and getting back to the OP. the phone itself is good minus those drawbacks deeko had mentioned.

I'm not interested in the petty bullshit arguments that I've read thus far in the thread but I'm looking for someone who has hopefully owned a few of the current offerings.

I need a new work phone that is email capable. I've had a few blackberries in the past including the Curve.. was really not impressed by it at all. Felt sluggish, browsing sucked. I've used a few Windows mobile devices as well and was completely underwhelmed by the experience.

Cost really isn't a big factor for me since I'm not paying the tab here. I was heavily considering getting the iPhone 3G simply based on the few times I've checked out a friends. I couldn't care less about the fanboyism or how trendy something is so please spare that kind of response. From a functionality standpoint what other phones should I look into? I was sort of intrigued with the iPhone simply because the interface was straight forward and simple and clean, it has a nice, colorful, large viewing area and it doubles as an mp3 player, something I am in the need of refreshing as well.

I've had one for about 6 months now, gen 1 hacked. Former owner of a dozen Palm devices including a VIIx, 1 TMobile SDA, 5 TMobile Dashes, a TMobile Wing, a couple of clunky HP & forgettable HP smartphones, etc... I've only owned one or 2 traditional cell phones, the rest have all been smartphones.

The biggest thing I miss is the ability to copy & paste, but I have to say the internet experience is the best available in the form factor, and yes I just had 2 BB Curves with Opera that I just sold on eBay.

The iPhone is dominating the market for a good reason, it's a good solid phone, and excellent web browser, very good email solution (BB is the best email solution), average calendar/scheduler (I think Palm is the best calendar/scheduler period).

In short the iPhone is good at a lot of things, with the best internet browsing of any phone.

AT&T doesn't sell service in my area so I couldn't get an iPhone even if I wanted it. They have service, there's towers up, they just don't sell the contracts within a 90 mile radius for some odd reason.

As long as you are fine with the negatives it is a good phone. Personally I would never own one due to the fact I hate itunes with a passion(other than the fact I am not leaving SERO anytime soon). I had a touch and loved it and the browser but itunes just kills the experience. My personal choice would be the Fuze but God knows WinMo has its problems. Unlike most of the other haters I say its a good device. Everything has its cons, just pick the one that has the most plus's for your uses.

On the other thread, the one about the high taxes on cell phone bill, several posters said the iPhone was good with usability, easy of use, web browsing but I didn't see anything that my Smartphone couldn't do for less than $40/month with same or better features.
