I would not be upset if the Feds paid for some of the subway repairs. The Subway is infrastructure which saves money in some ways in Gasoline expenses. However, dont expect the fed Govt to upgrade your ancient delapidated subway system. It collects money so just get a plan and a long term loan like they did for people in Alaska after one of their big earthquake/Volcanic events.

When a phone company wants to install a really expensive large switching system for phones, they get a long term financing agreement. This is the best way to handle a problem like this. Sell some long-term bonds or something. If they can rebuild the twin towers, why not the subway?

That's the way politics works. If your point is those items don't belong in this bill, that's not a valid point.

If you think those items are not worthy for some other reason, tell me why. Otherwise you have no point.

And even if they aren't worthy, you have to consider the effect of delaying the full restoration of an area vital to the entire country.

The vast majority of the vaule of NYC's subway is for NYC residents, why should I in Wisconsin pay for the NYC'r to have a subway. We don't have the money here to expand/support our public transport system, why should I pay for someones 1200 miles away?

You're totally missing the point. Disasters that damage major pieces of infrastructure cannot be insured against. Does that mean we stop building things that get us potable water, treat sewage, bridge rivers, transport people and goods? Since insuring every significant infrastructure work across the country is not possible the government is relied upon to step in when some extraordinary disaster takes place. This model is the same in every developed country.

Generally when money is spent to rebuild such a thing the government is heavily in favor of spending a little more to ensure the exact same thing doesn't happen again. Also a lot of components for parts of the subway haven't been mass manufactured for about half a century, the only option in many cases is to move to modern systems which are also better.

The MTA is already selling the $5B in bonds to get started on the work. They'll take whatever money ends up coming from the Feds against the bonds and pay off the rest themselves over time.
