Why is windows 8 still out there ?

I'm not one of them. I'm with you on this one. Windows 8/8.1 is the only one I can't stand.

I was truly excited from 95->98->ME->XP->Vista->7. Then there was 8.

What problems do you hit going from 8 to 8.1? The path should be to run through all windows updates on 8, then go into the windows store and 8.1 will be offered.

I don't use Win 8 on any of my personal PC's however much like Vista before it the hype far outweighs the actual problems with the OS.

Frankly its easy to use and work on too I just prefer Win 7.

Yup, for all the trash talk ME and Vista get, they didnt make things more difficult to navigate than their predecessors nor strip vital troubleshooting features like F8.

Why? it's easy to fix, just select refresh and restore. The registry and all that crap is the same. I had no troubles working on W8 for software repairs anymore so than any other Windows OS.

I suspect the reason is actually that the Windows 8.1 patch when initially released actually bricked the operating system for a lot of people. The update process isn't hard but if you either upgraded before or saw the news you will have avoided the update that would break your OS. I stuck with 8 for quite a while until the bug fix was released and confirmed in the wild for a couple of months with no further complaints of failures.

Built many

I will play with android and custom roms
run my own servers
build my own machines

I didn't say I couldn't fix a windows 8 pc or that I couldn't work with it
just that windows 8 sucks in comparison to anything else out there and that it is frustrating to even fix when the repair options are hidden and have to be invoked

Having to use extra software like Pokki (I know 8.1 has a home button now) and the whole mess with the 8.1 upgrade only available through the OEM or upgrade software and not a direct download was just wrong ( yes, it may have changed now....)

I dual boot my wife's ultrabook with windows 7 and windows 8 using a microSD and a standard SSD

Amusing to try @ 1st, but gave up on it within days

I agree with the OP too. I just had a Windows 8 AIO returned to me (past 30 days, even), at least in a large part because of Windows 8. It did some updates, and they wouldn't take, so it was stuck at the screen "Reverting Updates".

Not to mention, several reviews on Amazon, say that trying to update to Win8.1 doesn't work on this particular PC. It will try, but will revert. I secretly wonder if my client attempted the upgrade to 8.1, without assistance, and that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I have three decent Win8 PCs, and I can't unload any of them. Two of them are i3-based, they're not that old. (One SB, one IB.)

I never had any issues with Win8 or Win8.1 and I don't say that lightly either,btw I did recommend to a female friend to install SP2 on WinXP many years ago and it broke her PC,now does that mean XP is crap?...Obviously not since XP was probably the most used Windows OS of all time,yes I felt bad after ,but end of the day things like this happen with any OS,even drivers can cause issues,it comes with the territory as they say.

Btw I would not put Win8 or even Vista(Vista was fine on both my PCs as well back then) with WinME,WinME is in a place on its own far away from Vista,Win7,Win8 etc,as the worst OS ever.




Sad thing is too much FUD about Win8,one thing to rant but another thing to call it a bad OS,far from it infact up there with the best of them on stability etc...

Some would say what was wrong with 2K or XP etc,progress moves forward and STOPS for no OS or person.

Hardware moves forward so OS has to move forward to adapt to the needs of newer hardware/features etc...


You can bet some will bitch about Win10,but from I have seen etc looking to be another good OS like 8.1,infact even better.

Some things don't change with some people,stuck in the past etc...

I somewhat agree with the OP. MS should have removed all the Win8 media once Win8.1 was out within reason. I would say that anything that's still at the distributes would be relativity easy to bring back but items at the retail/vendors level may be tricky

I've worked with 8 systems that flat out refuse to update to 8.1. From resetting app store cache to SoftwareDistribution to SFC to what have you, some just will not update. Fewer won't even see the update app even with licenses synced. One system we gave up on because it will not even show the POS app store. The app update experiment was a disaster. I have never had a service pack screw the pooch like this.

And I disagree that 8.1 "fixes" 8. It gave 8 a start button but still just brings up the non-desktop-optimized start screen, now it just takes up room on the taskbar. It also breaks things like drivers that worked fine with 8 (looking at you Intel HD 3000/4000 APU's and the memory leak).

Apparently the new shortcut is Shift+F8. Never tried it, but that's what internet says. If true, then really, there is no difference in recovery options between 8.x and earlier versions.

I just received a Dell product catalog today and they are pushing all their outdated systems, and every one of them has Win8.1. I think that they are trying to dump as much of it as they can before Win10 comes out. I feel sorry for anyone who buys from this catalog that I just received.

At least 8 is a snappy OS. I think what most people hate is the UI. Just get WindowBlinds and the Windows 3.1 theme and you're welcome.
