Now, now. Don't bring facts and/or reasonable explanations into this.
We aren't living in 1999 any more guys. I imagine that they would be smart enough to not code in another Y2K kind of bug. Contrary to popular belief people learn from their mistakes. Look at Windows 8. But no one will know until MS says why exactly. Which they may never do.

You have too much faith in humanity. Java is the gift that keeps on giving.

Heh. I read your comment: "the creation of Windows 8 was Microsoft learning from their mistakes", but I'm guessing you meant "Look at Windows 8.1/10" though, right? I think they just go the direction which they believe will give them the most $$$ though. Another reason Linux distros are better to support.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
The world would be a better place without Java. While were at it get rid of Flash too.

bbhaag- You are once again not contributing to the thread, if you have nothing constructive to add to the conversation stop crapping the thread.

Posting a light hearted gif is hardly thread crapping. Especially when it agrees with the guy I'm quoting.

Now when I called you a newb...ya that was thread crapping.

The problem isn't Java, it's just bad code. Java is one of the few languages that can be used cross platform without a re-compile. .NET should be another, but the .NET runtime just isn't on Linux (and might have too many Windows specific functionality?) and Mono isn't as good as .NET.

Don't get me wrong, I hate that we teach Java to kids now and would prefer we teach C, briefly switch to ASM and make them write the same programs they wrote in C in ASM, then switch back to C. Learning ASM/writing a compiler was probably the most informative and educational thing I did in college - you suddenly grasp memory management of the stack and heap, and how things like loops actually work.

But Java in of itself isn't a terrible language - it's one of the most popular ones currently.

I have to agree to an extent. I just feel that Java and flash have too much bad code & is too easy to manipulate for malicious intentions. Personally I use Flashblock & NoScript.

Well good news for all that are complaining that Win8 is still out there. MS will no longer be making 8 available after Oct 31 2014
http://www.microsoft.com/OEM/en/products/windows/Pages/windows-8-1-overview.aspx#fbid=9Lx1EXhmLIv at the bottom

All Windows 8 products will reach End of License (EOL) on October 31, 2014:

Windows 8
Windows Professional
Windows 8 K, N, KN versions
Windows 8 single language versions
Note: After this date, system builders will no longer be able to order Windows 8 products from authorized distributors.
System builders are permitted to sell through any inventory of these Windows 8 products.
Windows 8.1 products will continue to be available from authorized distributors.

Windows 8.1 will still be available. How unfortunate.

Well you can't really have nothing on the market. And as much hate that 8 does have 8.1 is better than nothing and honestly if 8.1 was released instead of 8, I would say that while yes, there would still be flack, the fact that the option is there to change the settings for 8.1 is better than the in your face of 8 for metro

It's unfortunate too much moaning and pointless posts about Win8 from some people, either don't use it or use something else like Win7/Linux etc ,nobody is forced at gun point to use any OS.

Having said that you can bet some people will be moaning about Win10,11, etc some things don't change with some people.

Personally it's unfortunate too much moaning goes on,I guess some people are never happy.

You have to authorize java programs when they run.

The flash vulnerabilities came from the adobe updater, not flash itself.

It's just a language. By your logic, C is a terrible language since if I'm not using smart pointers in COM, or taking care of my pointers manually I'll leak memory. Or I could make a pointer go outside of my process' memory. Or I could use tons of goto statements that, while they work, may make code harder to read and understand.

EVERY language has someone writing bad code for it.

I've fixed thousands
Built many

I will play with android and custom roms
run my own servers
build my own machines

I didn't say I couldn't fix a windows 8 pc or that I couldn't work with it
just that windows 8 sucks in comparison to anything else out there and that it is frustrating to even fix when the repair options are hidden and have to be invoked

Having to use extra software like Pokki (I know 8.1 has a home button now) and the whole mess with the 8.1 upgrade only available through the OEM or upgrade software and not a direct download was just wrong ( yes, it may have changed now....)

Some of the rant got lost since it was written out of anger / frustration

One thing is to use a PC with windows 8 and deal with the issues

Another is to fix PCs, lots of them and realizing how bad thing became since the day windows 8 came around.

To this date, it is the only OS that I have skipped myself

Removing F8 and even hiding the power options was very stupid
Getting around windows 8 in a productive way (to actually work) while using the desktop, is or wasn't as simple without a start menu, Pokki and others helped with the issue, until the 8.1 revision

The whole licensing issue with OEM's not having direct access to an 8.1 iso was frustrating, forcing users to use the slower online option to update

Yes, we have to move on and newer operating systems have to be expected, but windows 8 was (to me and many others) a step backwards when compared to windows 7, one not seen before
Vista got all the bad reputation from manufacturers selling PC's with 512mb of RAM, and those systems could barely even boot the 1st time. That and the whole new UI was too new and required some power and again, crappy systems couldn't handle it
I've always had fast systems and tried longhorn for years until it became vista and didn't have any issues with it

I dual booted windows 8 when it 1st came out and never really used it, just didn't like it for myself

Now, the wife thought it was amusing to slide those tiles using her touchscreen

And to my surprise, I became so disconnected with windows, that I, until now, didn't know about Windows 10, (skipping windows 9) and anything else microsoft related
self taught huh?

Sure....that's why I run servers today (not 30 years ago), maintain networks for small clients, and have a pc running an I7 2600k @ 4.8 ghz on air for the past 2 years
that is nice...you can be anything you want on the internet.......doesn`t mean we have to believe you...

Fine by me, but if MS can just get their heads out of their asses and provide an 8.1 pro .iso for those of us with legit Win8 keys I might install it again. As it is now, I have to install Win8, download and install a bunch of updates for it, then download and install the 4GB 8.1 update from the Windows store. It's a colossal waste of time and bandwidth and I end up with a wonky installation that crashes and freezes. So I'm back on Win7.

Agreed. The whole 8 ->8.1 upgrade was handled very poorly. I was thinking about doing a reinstall myself but I'm pretty sure I would have to go all the way back to Windows 7 to do so. No thanks.

You could try this to get the ISO, now I have not tried it personally as luckly I was able to get my isos from Technet before they shut our the subscriptions
