The skinny is that it's very easy to be someone unaffected by Voter ID laws, and just say, "What's the big deal?" Your vantage point on life doesn't give you the experience to understand how it could negatively affect someone, and that's understandable; it requires thinking way outside the box. So, what makes this worse is that voter fraud is incredibly rare, which means there isn't really a reason to have Voter ID laws. I'd call it security theater, but I think that would be rude to the art of theatre. 😛

Voter fraud is very different from rape and child porn. Voter fraud is a victimless crime until it rises to the point of changing the outcome of an election. So in other words, its not good, but also not worth suppressing other votes unless it rises to the point of impacting elections. And right now, we are orders of magnitude below that point. On the other hand, with rape and child pornography, every single instance has a direct impact on an individual.

However, dealing with voter fraud and rape both share some commonalities. For example, you make sure that the cure is not worse than the disease. You don't turn the country into a surveillance state in order to prevent rape. You don't disenfranchise millions of voters to prevent a handful of fraudulent votes.

It's sad that all of that needs to be explained. Even sadder that @killster1 won't read it, and even if he did, he couldn't understand it.

Given that state IDs cost money, requiring state ID to vote is clearly just an attempt to circumvent the 24th amendment.
