Country artists are the only people actually making real music nowadays. Rap is a bunch of sampled garbage (some of it is catchy, though) and has sunk to new lows with the sampling of the numa numa song. Rock (which I like) is filled with a bunch of over-distorted Nickleback wanna-bes.

If you want to hear what real talent sounds like, listen to Brad Paisley's new album. That's how guitar should be played.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:
Did you get that out with a straight face? No, really.

I won't deny that there's a few of them, but there's people making real music in other genres too. It's just not Top 40 (or even Top 100)
Nickelback themselves are a pastiche of other successful rock bands.

Straight face, yep. :)

There's alot of great music out there. Unfortunately, country is the only place where that talent is actually mainstream.
Yeah, all those classical and jazz musicians have no talent whatsoever.

The truth is, any mainstream rap/country/rock probably does suck. If you take the time to get into the genre and find more 'underground' artists, you'll probably find something that isn't overly stereotyped and that you can actually enjoy.

This.

If it is on CMT, BET, or MTV there is a 95% chance that it sucks.

Basically, good music in each genre has some type of variation of the modifier "independent."

Good Country = Alternative Country
Good Rock = Indie Rock
Good Rap = Underground Hip Hop

I'm a big fan of the Common's (underground hip hop) early work, Yo La Tengo (indie rock), and hank williams the 3rd (alternative country), but I can't fucking stand 50 Cent (Rap), Kenny Chesney (Country) or Nickleback (Rock).

Well said.

I can pretty much go with this.

Alt Country (as opposed to crap commercial country) has so many fine, fine artists and a, well, a tradition going back to the '60's and that fruitful confluence of Texas, hippies, country music, and drugs . . . really, really good drugs!

It makes me sad that so few of you seem to know much about any of them, but, eh, your loss.

Anyway, here's two of the finest, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Jerry Jeff Walker with a bunch of their friends at Willie Nelson's second 4th of July picnic back in 1974 singing Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother.

Enjoy. ;)

Sure that is why it is a thriving industry not only in the US but Canada and Australia as well.

Note that in sales by genre C&W is #2 behind Rock.

Music Sales in the United States by Genre

Popular /= good

It's all marketing for the most popular, and most of the shit that get's on the airwaves is pure, unadulterated crap.

If you want good music, check out small clubs. A lot of times they will attract bands you will never hear otherwise.

ROFL! I've been a Jerry Jeff fan for years and years. Also, irreverent sumbitch, David Allen Coe.

I wasn't making a statement regarding good/bad rather I was responding to the statement that "country music is disliked just about everywhere except for the south".

I grew up watchin' Hee Haw. I like country music musicians, but the vocal track will usually kill it for me with a few exceptions.

I can get into players like Johnny Hiland for example.

IMO: Country music prior to 1980 is acceptable. Country music post 1980 is horrible.

We actually used to have a country station here but don't think we have it anymore. Come to think of it I have not heard country in a LONG time. I actually don't mind it as it reminds me of my childhood and when I used to go camping more. My grandpa always had the radio setup on the motor home and it played all day long. The fact that we were 50 miles in the bush added lot of static and extra effect to it. when there was a storm every time a lightning hit you'd here a little static in the music. Sounds that just seem to stick forever... We'd be sitting around drinking pop / beer, feeding the chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits. I miss camping. *starts downloading random country songs for nostalgia*

When it's not full of name dropping and lauding the merits of getting fucked up in a beloved patriot tonk and screwing someone you don't know, it's praising the lord and lamenting the loss of the good ole days while slipping in not-so-subtle religio-political ideas about how things and people "ought to be". The hilariously hypocritical part of this is that EVERY contemporary country artist has a repertoire of MANY songs that fit both categories. I don't know how someone can listen a Gretchen Wilson CD with a song about being a good little christian girl on track 2 and "All Jacked Up" on track 10 and not suffer a terminal illogical feedback loop.

Somehow it's ok when the old guys do it. That's one of my favorite country songs btw. It's the contemporaries that come off as false and hypocritical. IDK maybe it's just me, but country these days reminds me of Rap as far as content goes.

I just started listening to country about this time last year, and slowly but surely it's becoming one of my favourite genres.

Last weeks CMA awards were awesome! I agree with someone earlier, I think country is more "real" than other genres, in that it doesn't try to appeal to everyone. If you like it you like it, if not that's ok too.

Also, Taylor Swift is just too damn adorable!

Thank god for rock and rap where names are never dropped, religious and political themes and statements are never uttered nor explored, and not word is spoken about drug and alcohol (ab)use.

I listen to a lot of country music. I would prefer to listen to rock, but most new rock nowadays is too angry for me. I like classic rock, but hate classic rock radio that plays the same 12 songs repeatedly. Pop music and rap are full of limitless suck and are out of the question. I'm religious, but most Christian rock/pop/whatever sucks. I like electronica/dance/jazz/blues/classical (orchestral), but I have to be in the right mood to listen to it. Hawaiian music is too happy. What's left?

Some country has a really nice narrative quality, kind of how rock was prior to 1985. Other modern genres of music are stuck in a rut with the same 3 themes: anger, hooking up, party all night.

Some country still has a sense of humor. See Brad Paisley. (OMG, NuclearNed just cited a mainstream country artist!!! The horror!!!)

Some country has an authentic feel to it.

Some country sucks beyond belief.
