LOL! I'm Vietnamese & I too have to do that occasionally. It all depends on the person, because there are many soft spoken Viet people & dialect sound surprisingly sweet to the ears.

They're both calm as well, consistant in tones. They can sound very soft and pleasing to the ears when they say a sentence like... "I would like to drink coffee today."

if you were to say the same thing in vietnamese/chinese, it'd probably sound like this:

"AIII WoulD liiiiiiiiIiiIike tOOo Dr*i*nk! coFFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE todaiiiii!!!"

ugh. hope you get my drift.

zin tien, wo shihuan he ga-fei.

Pretty soft to me...

Yea, chinese women always sound mad when they're talking all fast. I guess it depends what part you're from, my whole family is like turtle-slow speakers but when I go to China town I hear some pretty harsh dialects (in Mandarin). Cantonese is a different story.

You just don't know what you are talking about.
There are so many chinese dialects, you can't just negate all of them because of a single one.
However, it's true about Cantonese, it's one of the loudest, most annoying, common chinese dialects used.
Mandarin, Japanese, Korean are all nice dialects though.

What the? That's extremely odd... I speak Spanish fluently and I can't even imagine how anyone would think the language is harsh to the ears...

1) The people were speaking in an annoying manner--happens with any language--I remember my "elders" chastising me for speaking in an uncouth manner not befitting my noble lineage :p
2) Chinese (all dialects) sounds alien and harsh for people who did not grow up with it. Again--this applies to some other languages as well.

Mandarin is really sing-songy, yeah...but Cantonese can seem pretty harsh. A girl that I was talking to spoke both Cantonese and Dutch, and the two were fairly similar as far as harshness went.

However, Korean isn't much better. It's maybe not as audibly assaulting when you aren't used to it, but it's still pretty dayam throaty. Then again, I don't think I've heard a language yet that annoys me just by being spoken. Vietnamese can come close sometimes, but even it can sound nice depending on who's speaking.

on the contrast, you know what sounds really really sweet?

greek coming out of my gf's lips.. (she's physically korean but adopted by greek parents, speaks fluent greek.. HOT!)

A greek speaking korean...interesting mix. Greek can sound sweet unless it's your mom yelling at you for something then it's time to head for the hills. Oh, and a single greek is tolerable, but the volume grows exponentially with each additional person....think "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

I find ebonics more irritating than any other language. Takalog (Filipino) is a close second. But it really depends on how loud the speaking person is.

Seriouly when I hear people speaking Korean, it sounds like they are spitting. Anyway, two chatting chicks are annoying no matter what language they speak.

From my experience:

Mandarin - la, nee-ga (think about that when theres an african american around...) constantly over and over
Cantonese - ahhh at the end of sentences to make it sound more important

Uh . . . my Mandarin is really bad, but I'd reply: "Go to Starbucks." :)

Oh...
Couldn't quite get the last 3 words.
Maybe it should be "hur ka-fei"?

I find it annoying when people say stuff like "I'm black, so it's okay for me to have negative attitudes associated with black people." :D

i agree with everything this man said.
