If I'm there for a few things I'll just use the self-checkout, if it's a bunch of groceries and I'm waiting in line it's not like taking 20s to fill out a check it really going to slow things down much compared to minutes that are spent waiting for people's items to be scanned and bagged.

Its an issue because instead of just paying and getting out of the way for the rest of us people feel the need to write a check for a $.70 pack of gum. This wouldnt be an issue still if you had everything except the amount filled out when it was time to pay but nooooooo, people need to fill out the date, merchant name etc etc because obviously its impossible to do while they are ringing up your purchases

i use checks because i want to.

its maybe 5 seconds slower useing a check then a CC. they scan the check and you sign a reciept. where they scan the CC and you sign a receipt.

with a Debit card it takes as long as a check. you have to swip the card put in a pin and they have to aprove it etc.

but its 5 seconds longer. no big deal

get over yourself, the wait aint gonna kill you

It's inefficient and one more reason why all of us has to wait due to your inability to accept change.

I hate impatient people.
If I see you in the store.. i will be sure to

1)seperate my order into 2 parts
2)forget something and go back to get it while my order is on the register
3)pay for both orders with checks
4)buy lottery tix after that
5)ask the bagger to help me load my bags into my vehicle.

if you prefer efficiency, then shop online. Stay the hell out of my B&M store.

Now thats just being rude/borderline pants on head retarded

The only reason CC is faster is because employees do not ask to see your card like they are supposed to and verify the signature. I work at Kohl's. Both methods of payments are just about the same time of wait. If the CC goes through I check the signature and ID if requested and shit and then bag. With checks I bag while they are writing the check. Then I write their DL on it and put it through. Takes 20 seconds max. No big deal.

Using checks during the holiday season should be banned!!! The lines are long enough as it is, we don't need grandma with her checkbook and slow writing hand making it even worse.

I think it's just an act of common courtesy. You can just hear the collective sigh from the people in line with someone pulls out a check. And most of them don't even have the common courtesy to have it filled out while waiting in line before they have to pay (i.e., name, store, sign the check, etc), so they do it when the cashier tells them the total.

It's like those fools that drive the speed limit in the fast lane. Sure, you're legally allowed to drive the speed limit, but move your ass over to the right lane instead of impeding people that like to go 5 or 10 over.

For me personally, 99% of my transactions are done electronically. Everything from my power/heating/water/cable bills to my car payment. I use my debit card for all of my purchases including my gas/food. I rarely even carry cash anymore b/c it is rarely even needed. I only use cash to pay for my hair cut and that's only once a month.

The only time I use a check is to pay my rent every month, and that's mailed off to California.

The reason they can't just write the check in line is cause um, there is no place to write. Just write the check when you get to the line and the employee scans their items.

Besides what's the difference between a grandma with her checkbook as apposed to a grandma with a CC who doesn't know how to use the swipe thing where you do it yourself? "What do I do next?" "Let me get my glasses so I can see what this is saying" "Where do I sign?! Right here?!" "Oh my this signature is no where close to mine where can I clear it?"

Trust me. No big difference

With a Check, usually the person MUST present a Drivers License. With a credit card, all you do is Swipe, enter pin if it's debit, and just sign. Rarely ever do stores actually ask for my card and look at the back where I wrote "ASK FOR ID". Writing Checks doesn't take that long. All you have to do, is write the check out in advance, all you have to fill in is how much to pay. That's what I do. Usually I'm done writing the check and the employees aren't done with bagging my clothing. So it's the same as waiting for a person to bag.

I have a friend who's credit card was stolen and she had "ASK FOR ID" on the back of it. She hadn't canceled it to see how far it would go. The person who stole the credit card was able to go to 13 stores without being caught until the 14th store asked for ID and contacted officials. She now uses checks.

I know you can easily cancel a CC but then it takes a while for you to get the new CC, so I don't want to hear that.

You'd be surprised how many people don't ask for ID when it comes to checks as well. The truth is when you sign a check and cash it the bank dosen't match your sig unless you bitch. Then they make an effort at that. The same goes for credit cards. Checks are an antiquated form of payment in a modern society. Most credit card companies have fraud protection systems in place so that once your card goes stolen and you report it to the police they will back out all those transactions. Once someone has your checkbook they have your check account number and you address. You've got to close and re-open your account (likely at that bank). With a credit card it takes seconds for them to generate a number on your account...

Also checks are slower and have a longer float. If you want the money taken instantly out from your account (matter of seconds) you would use some sort of electronic payment. While checks can take a couple of days to come out from your account. In that time you forget you wrote the check and buy something else shorting your account.

Because they work? Get over it, how dare they make you wait another 40 seconds.

Have you fallen for those retarded-ass credit card commercials or something? What's wrong with you?

I pay my mortgage, electric bill, car insurance, cable bill, credit card bill and HOA online. I never write a check....

Well I know for where I work, if we don't ask for DL I get a warning, if I do it after the warning I will get fired.

Oh and if you short your account, that's your own fault for being irresponsible. Keep the receipts, keep a booking of your activity. Simple as that :)

Trust me, I'm a 19 year old check writer. I only use checks and occasionally DC when it's a small purchase. Had no problems of holding up lines or shorting my account or a place that has not asked for my DL

They still use checks because they dont actually have the money to pay for the items so they need to "float" a little bit. If they have a check then they have an account and an atm/check card as well.

when those same ppl do have the money they will use their card.

People only complain cause they think writing checks is soooooo yesterday. They want everyone to be up to date with CC's and stuff.

I believe that with CC, you get a statement every month? And if you can't pay it, thats when they start charging interest and when people can get in debt? Correct me if I'm wrong. I only know that Debit takes it directly out of your account.

cause 100% of people pay off their CC's every month? Give me a break, checks are clearing faster than before and floating will only get them in trouble fast.

Some people just fear change. I have an old guy at work who only uses checks. And he will refuse to deal with a company after they have handled his check in a way he didn't like. He apparently got all upset when one shop told him that they just image the checks and shred them. He insisted on getting his check back and left the store. I think he canceled his service with DTV when something similar happened. And then he's always complaining about how when he returns things, they take a long time to give him his money back (since he paid with a check).

Yeah it says from your age. When you open a checking account you get a debit card but that debit card has a visa logo on it. So you can use it as a credit card. It comes out of your checking account though. So the cashier dosen't know what's going on except that your using a credit card.

If they are paying by check they probably dont even have a credit card due to bad credit. And if they have bad credit whats a few worthless checks?

EDIT: In my state I have never even heard of anyone being arrested for writing a bad check. Hell I had my checkbook stolen and the chic used it at a grocery store to get $515 worth of groceries which she was never even arrested for. Oh and no the grocery store did not check ID on a check when the sale was 515 bucks.

People who write bad checks all the time...... At least doing bad transactions on a credit card won't get you in jail like a check does. What is it "uttering bad checks" yeah they will arrest you for that. Mess up once. IN some states there is no warning. Depending on the amount. I knew a person who was arrested for writing a 400 check that was bad. He only had 398 in his account. Because he was doing the same "float" bullshit and mess up by a couple of dollars.

The only reason I don't carry around cash is because at my school, it is very common to have money stolen. Yes I carry my purse with me everywhere but I'm the type that expects stuff to happen to me

Why would you want to carry cash around where it can be robbed and isn't earning you interest? I have absolutely no qualms about using a credit card to pay McD's $1.06 for my two apple pies.

paying with a check does not equal having bad credit. It could actually be seen as more responsible since they can balance their account very quickly in the checkbook.

Some of the stuff in this thread...

I never carry cash with me. The most I've ever carried is 100 dollars. You get robbed that cash is gone. You get robbed with a checkbook or visa card theres a chance (pretty high with cc) that the person who robbed you willl get notthing.

now getting robbed is the reason to pay with a CC? Maybe Visa will make a commercial with that
