basketball, nfl, nhl while all great entertaining sports, why arent sports globally played/popular not mainstream in this country

edit: guess i should add baseball to above list as well, since its pretty popular here as well (personally i find it very boring though :p)

tennis has a pretty damn big following here.

soccer is not particularly exciting. in addition, tv networks can't figure out how to make money on it, which basically dooms it. without a tv contract you don't gain fans, and you don't have enough money to compete with other sports for the same athletes.

edit: cricket is even worse than soccer

I find pretty much all sports equally boring, I only enjoy and follow baseball.

Hockey is pretty global.

Tennis is followed here pretty widely.

And soccer, well, it's just bloody boring. It takes a lot of skill and athleticism to play, but it's damn boring to watch. It moves slowly, and there are very few exciting moments.

soccer is non-stop action with no scoring at all and most of the action has no hope of resulting in a score in the next few seconds. so the action, while non-stop, is boring. football can always break a TD, and baseball can always have a homerun. oh, and because soccer has no stops it isn't suitable for pay-tv at all. (or getting a beer, or hitting the toilet, whatever)

in soccers case, you have to always watch it or you may miss out on the 1 goal they score a game. In football, you can skip the 2nd and 3rd quarters and while you may lose out on some big plays, you know you'll see that same play 20x a day on sportscenter and nfl prime time for the next week.

yes, non stop action, but would it kill them to score a goal every once in awhile?

Fair enough. I don't watch any sports at all but I will say out of the "normal" tv sports most people watch football is pretty close to tolerable and sometimes fun to watch.

Basketball (NBA) has to be the worth, nothing worse than a bunch of overpaid -insert sentence here that would probably get me banned-

NBA SUCKS, NCAA is only thing even close to bearable

What action? Clusterfvck around the ball and nothing else. There are no "miracle moments" of great plays. Might as well watch a marathon.

to those who don't like it, it is non stop inaction. i'm not one to rag on other sports (lol I do track and field... just running in circles), but i personally don't like soccer because it seems that it's just back and forth and there are so few goals that it just drags along. to each his own...

more on topic... i'm in high school and soccer is huge around here in south california. tennis is pretty big here too. the main reason that I agree with someone said before... if it's not on TV, it's not going to be popular (which is also pretty sad...)

I agree that baseball is most boring sport out there. I mean even golf is more entertaining, at least it has a nice green surrouding.

I think this is it. I love soccer but most people I know don't. All the good players can make more money playing in European leagues so the MLS teams are all pretty weak.

I think it is also because there are no breaks for commercials so TV stations don't want to carry it. If it's not on TV most people don't even know it's happening.

Not for me. I find soccer utterly boring. It was never more apparent to me when I caught myself turning away from a NCAA women's soccer game. If I'm not going to watch a bunch of college girls run around in shorts, then the sport has no potential as a spectator sport.
