Why doesn't anyone come close to apple as far as design?

I prefer to use my computer to get things done. Not looking at it as it sits on my desk thinking about having man babies with steve jobs.

I'm not even sure what my work computer looks like. It's under the desk and I haven't touched it in months

I don't understand why people have this attitude. Anyways, the main thing is you're already spending money on a computer, doesn't it matter to you that a company put time and effort to work on the design?

i'm willing to bet that the majority of the people in this thread bashing and hating on apple laptops have never used one of the newer laptops. regardless of hating/liking apple/osx or them being overpriced ... they are a thing of beauty and the touchpad on that thing is simply amazing as well.

My girlfriend has a new macbook pro and the touchpad on it is so awesome. I love the multi-touch functionality.

The point is that most people don't think the look of it has a dollar value. As posted above, I never look at my work computer. I see the keyboard, mouse, and monitor all the time, but I never see the tower. Lots of people keep a computer under the desk or tucked into some slot that is specifically for the computer tower. We never see the sides or back of the computer. We only see the front, and that's only when loading a CD into it or using the card reader some computers have.

I never said I had an accounting degree. I bought a C2D unibody 13" mbp in 2008 with college discount, and free ipod touch (so around $980). Sold it 2 years later for $850. For a net $130 fee for using the laptop for 2 years. This is not possible with windows laptops, because few windows laptops are 'premium' enough to have a respectable resale value.
...
Except that Apple now designs them to be replaced and tossed due to non-serviceable consumables (batteries). They are pulling that crap on desktops now too with the HDDs that have a special sensor inside and can't pass the hardware check without it (what was wrong with the taped-on sensors before?!).

If I can't buy a new battery for their three year old notebook, I'm either no longer considering buying used or I'm not paying nearly as much for a used one.

THAT plastic POS? Hilarious.

Aluminum unibody MacBooks only existed from late 2008 to early 2010... a little over a year. Even the current unibody MacBook is plastic and has been on the market over a year. Your bias is showing.

It it adds an additional $500 to the price tag it does.

Amazing how many Shapples there are to keep that company profitable. For example, the separate 3G plan that these fools are paying for their iPads + iPhone. Now that iPhone4 iOS 4.3 tethers, there isn't a point in getting an iPad2 unless you just want a bigger screen. Whoopdefckingdoo. Yet, you'd be amazed how many idiots will still buy both and continue to pay for separate 3G plans instead of tethering off one plan.

Apple has been scamming their customers for over a year by not allowing iphone tethering out of the box (apple users knowing how to hack? yeah right). They were forcing ipad users to pay for separate plans to appease shareholders. And yet the Shapples still allow themselves to get shaken down in order to be a part of the "club". Lemming mentality at its finest and with the sales pitch of "better design". I'll pass, thank you.

Let's just throw out random numbers so it makes it seem like people pay extremely high premiums for Macs.

The battery on the MBs should last you at least 3 years old. That's the point of having no user-replaceable batteries.

Why would we be talking about work computers? You didn't pay for those work computers. We're talking about computers at home that you pay for.

Right. Because the payment for those 3G plans goes directly to Apple, not the mobile networks that they're on.

What enables iPhone tethering? iOS, made by Apple. Who saved money by not negotiating with the mobile networks for a combined plan for iPad users to tether to their iPhone? Apple, by making their Lemmings pay for separate plans. Who fattens their pockets as a result? Apple. The party is over now because even Apple users want tethering. No way! I thought iPhone had the best design?

In any case, Android is smacking iOS down in market share so it doesn't really matter. Many apple users just made the switch and downloaded easy tether or pdanet off Android market. Problem solved for free.

How does Apple save money by not negotiating with the mobile networks for a combined plan and how does Apple get that money?"

What does tethering have to do with best design?

I do care about the design and that's exactly why I bought a ThinkPad. I want a system that's built to be a useful tool not impress people at Starbucks.

I've used the new MBP's and even considered buying a MBP 13 until Lenovo released the x220 which offered a superior screen, better battery life, and identical cpu and gpu all in a better looking system. Plus the x220 was $200 cheaper than the equivalent Mac.

So if I own both *which I don't* you're suggesting if I'm out and want internet on my iPad I should pull out my iPhone + a cable to hook them together so I can tether? What if I want to walk around with my iPad? Tethering only makes senses to me if you're going to be completely stationary. And while you're bitching about Apple and tethering, I cannot tether on my Motorola Droid either, well not out of the box any ways.

So I guess that makes Motorola + Verizon as bad as Apple huh? But if I buy a Wifi Xoom I cannot use my Droid to tether it. DAMN APPLE for giving me the option!

Pears and quinces come pretty close to the design of an apple. As do cherries and crab apples, albeit smaller.

Tethering also means wifi tethering or bluetooth tethering.

It's hard to distinguish the douches that use Macs for Facebook and surfing the internet from the people that actually use Macs for other things.

BT tethering sounds like a great way to kill the battery, I use BT for headphones on my HTC EVO and the battery drains 3x as quick. I can only imagine using BT to tether would take an even bigger hit on battery life. Still dude was bitching about Apple when not a single smartphone I've owned offered tethering by default.

That's why I usually use wifi tethering while having it plugged into power.

Yeah I know. It's interesting to see how uninformed some people are.

The point is that tethering wasn't even an option out of the box, which would have saved Apple users a good chunk of money instead of ponying up for 2 data plans instead of one. Now it's an option because Apple users want to tether (no wai, design flaw?). And nobody gives a sht if you want to walk around with your iPad because the masses want tethering with their iPhones; whether it's to their Macbook or iPad or windows notebook.

Yes, initially you couldn't tether out of the box with 1st Gen droids. But at least you had the option to do it with Android apps (easy as hell, my 53 yr old dad does it with Easy Tether) and didn't have to hack. Droid carriers did initially bitch and were going to remove it until they realized it'd be a cash cow with the pay per use data plans. Apple finally realized they aren't special and will have to conform to the masses (i.e. Android's market share) if they want to sell their iPhone on new carriers like Verizon.

Uhh... you do realize that that applies to WiFi too. In fact, BT is lower power than WiFi. WiFi tethering will notably decrease battery life. The issue is that BT tethering is slow.

Back when I was tethering with PdaNet, WiFi tethering combined with non-native routing meant that the phone would discharge faster than it could charge (it would literally drain while plugged in). It would also get hot and stop charging all together.
