Why doesn't anyone come close to apple as far as design?

Even the most ardent windows fan will have to admit that apple makes the best looking PCs and Laptops. No other manufacture makes products as well designed as apple. Apple PCs are like an art work, so well designed. Apple designers are not doubt the best in the industry. Leagues beyond anyone else.

Why doesn't anyone else come close?

I don't want a fancy looking laptop. My laptop is a tool. I'm very content with black plastic like a Thinkpad.

Because the other makers prefer to compete on features/price. Apple is it's own thing, and selling their products requires people wanting to belong to the Apple club. There is no HP, Acer, or Dell club, so they make computers with other features.

I will agree that while I am a PC user, the built quality, and aesthetic design of Mac's is hard to beat. Problem with that is that sort of build (aluminum unibody, specially cut motherboard, etc) all costs money to create.

I will totally agree they make sleek looking laptops but if you know how to build your own PC you can get some very slick and very premium desktop cases, and as far as monitors good there are plenty of good looking and solidly built monitors too that aren't Apple...I think the idea of superior design is a function of Apples advertising. Well that and near rabid user base...

I sort agree (my soon-to-arrive laptop is a T420). Utilitarian designs are fine. The W and V series looked nice, but I wouldn't classify them as gaudy or showy.

They're definitely not infalible when it comes to build quality. My 13" MacBook Air (2010 model) creaks like crazy when it's cold. It's annoying as hell. Plenty of complaints about it on the web:

If anything I think my Acer laptop is too round. I liked the way my HP was very boxy and rectangular. It had a really nice feel to it. The computer still sucked, but the design was nice.

I love the thinkpad look. It's amazing how timeless it is even when it's a 20yr old design.
It looks so classy and it feels of quality. I've used a few sexy looking shiny laptops. They look awesome when they're new, but they wear quickly and unless you keep them clean all the time, they get all gunky fast.

For some reason, my 5 yr old thinkpad still looks almost new. It just doesn't really seem to get dirty for some reason.

Because they hire some of the best industrial designers in the world and people are willing to pay more for it. PC's are more commoditized e.g. how cheap how fast. Beyond that they use attractive components & materals. Wide angle TN's, H-IPS displays, brushed metals, etc
