Why does San Franscisco have so many homeless

I got back from SF a few days ago and couldn't believe the amount of bums around. It reminded me of that South Park episode where the town is invaded by bums. What's going on?

I've been to much larger cities than SF....none of them compare. Maybe they're left overs from the dot com boom?

If there is one squirrel in your back yard today and you feed it does he come back tomorrow? If you continue to feed him how many other squirrels start showing up?

Warm climate year-round, so no cold snaps to freeze the homeless to death. Extremely liberal, so more friendly overall to the homeless / jobless. Somewhat eccentric area, so the crazy ones blend in better. Everything is close together and mass transit is available, so you can get almost anywhere in the city without a car or much money. High population density, so more people around at any given time to beg money from. Overall expensive cost of living means that the well-to-do residents have more spare change to pass out.

Everything about the area is a "perfect storm" creating ideal bum living conditions. Hell, if I were homeless, I'd put down the crack pipe / bottle just long enough to save for a one-way ticket straight to SF by the cheapest method possible.

I did once...in Korea

Anyways, so more liberal = more homeless? Or is it that in other cities the homeless are not as lauded?

Maybe that was too strong...accepted?

Boxcar. Cheap enough you don't even have to give up the crack and booze.

I think that's the answer. SF is incredibly supportive of the homeless, so they tend to attract them.

Yeah, this. Plus, how many people freeze to death while sleeping under a viaduct in the Bay Area. It's a Marine Climate zone.

If I ever found myself out on the pavement on my ass, that's where I'd go.

......i guess u don't know local bay area politics. sf is known for its homeless problem. they are also known as soft touches which attracts the homeless.

in fact its warmer further inland..south....sf isn't particularly warm, in fact its quite cool in the bay area. known for fog and cold by the ocean.

My wife and I were in San Francisco a while back. While there, we were sitting inside at a restaurant that had an outdoor patio area. We saw a homeless dude push cart through the patio, between the tables and chairs, asking people for food. Blech.

In San Francisco the homeless are almost a protected class. It's the JROTC high school kids who they see as the real problem, heh!

This is it in a nutshell.

Not so cold climate, (yes, cool and foggy, but no freezing, no snow) liberal politics that encourage them to come by the thousands, and laws that protect them.

Sure it's warmer inland but it's not cold in SF.

must've never been to NYC. It is my impression that NYC has more bums and SF has more beggers.
