San Fran was attracting homeless long before the economy went into the crapper. As others have said, San Fran has very homeless friendly policies. Word got out and the homeless flocked to them.

I believe at one point, they were actually giving the homeless allowances and had setup a storage area to keep their belongings if they ever wandered off, left town, disappeared or whatever.

Bums in a large city??? Hmm I guess this must be a new thing.

......i guess u don't know local bay area politics. sf is known for its homeless problem. they are also known as soft touches which attracts the homeless.

in fact its warmer further inland..south....sf isn't particularly warm, in fact its quite cool in the bay area. known for fog and cold by the ocean.

Yes, "quite cool" means you aren't going to be brutalized by excessive heat and humidity during the summer, but as long as you can find some blankets, shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets, etc. you aren't going to freeze your ass off. It virtually never freezes in S.F. Where would you rather be if homeless? Mild weather where people look at you like a leper or somewhat cooler weather where there are a lot of other homeless people around who share your _predicament_? It's as if the lunatics have taken over the asylum. I live 10 miles away but I don't get over there much. There's plenty of homeless near me.

Certainly, but it's absolutely a contributing factor. It's gotten a lot harder for (not homeless) people to live in S.F. the last few years.

Actually there is one here in downtown Houston. Been here since I've worked downtown - about 11 years.

Panhandling is banned in the city. Camping in golden gate park is banned as well. It's the damn hippies that are protecting the homeless. We should just put them on a boat and ship them all to Farallon Island.

the downtown area is over run with em, mainly cause all the shelters and places that feed them or provide any sort of clothing.

I myself have no sympathy for the homeless, nor give them any $$ ever, they should have better decisions in the past so they wouldn't end up homeless, or try to get a job. That's what I think, and I know im being kinda dense in that thinking but i frankly don't give a F about em so :p :p :p

L.A.'s too spread out. In SF there's more concentration. Less of a sense of isolation by virtue of that concentration, less despressing. As long as survival is not the issue, if you are homeless your chief enemy is depression.

AFAIK, it's only "aggressive" panhandling that is banned. It's open to interpretation, of course. The cops aren't going to lean on a panhandler unless they are being really obnoxious etc.

Baked, you should check your irascibility quotient. You might get an ulcer.

Looks left at Baked's author icon and backs slowly out of the thread.

You've obviously never been to Santa Monica and Venice.

Jesus...people really dont know this?

The socialist programs in SF are much better, so homeless from around the state flock there. When I was there you couldnt walk 10 feet without running into a parade or bum.

there are bums in L.A. but it's harder for them to get around. I don't think you can live in southern california without a car

Never heard of the bus? Plenty of people live/work in LA without a car.

Somewhat eccentric area, so the crazy ones blend in better. Everything is close together and mass transit is available, so you can get almost anywhere in the city without a car or much money. High population density, so more people around at any given time to beg money from. Overall expensive cost of living means that the well-to-do residents have more spare change to pass out.

Everything about the area is a "perfect storm" creating ideal bum living conditions. Hell, if I were homeless, I'd put down the crack pipe / bottle just long enough to save for a one-way ticket straight to SF by the cheapest method possible.

right.. if i'm homeless, i'd live there.... maybe nyc during the summer....

I lived in L.A. so I know the area well
yeah there are buses, but the southern cali area is not as concentrated as SF
I have not met one person who lived and worked in southern california without a car

Why do people take the bus then? I know two people that live in LA and don't own cars. They take the bus to work.

Nah...that area is far too pristine. They'd shit and piss in the water and pollute it.

The fishing is (was) fabulous at the Farallons. I used to take the boat ride at least 2x per month.

Just send them all to Tex-Ass...it's already polluted.
