there are bums in L.A. but it's harder for them to get around. I don't think you can live in southern california without a car

Never heard of the bus? Plenty of people live/work in LA without a car.

I lived in L.A. so I know the area well
yeah there are buses, but the southern cali area is not as concentrated as SF
I have not met one person who lived and worked in southern california without a car

Why do people take the bus then? I know two people that live in LA and don't own cars. They take the bus to work.

they take buses to get around after work? LAWL
plus I said I'm talking about southern california, L.A. isn't the only city in southern cali

Because if you get caught homeless in Nevada, they put you on a prison bus and dump you on the other side of the state line.

The homeless people in Texas used to be nice. They would ask for change very nicely and even strike up interesting conversation.

A few years ago:
Hobo: Spare any change?
Me: No change, sorry
Hobo: That's alright, have a great day

Now we're getting homeless people coming in from California and they are very mean. They harass people and they steal food from people walking around with leftovers or groceries.

Now:
Hobo: Got any change?
Me: No change, sorry
Hobo: Well FUCK you. *makes threatening gesture*

Not to mention, the new hobos are all strung up on heroine. The old hobos would just get drunk and smoke pot.

I was just there around Christmas. My GF grew up there. She commented that there used to be a lot more homeless people in some of the areas we passed. I didn't see very many at all. Where do they go during Christmas??

That wasn't my experience with the homeless in Texas. I got lost in Dallas at 10:00 pm. A homeless guy came up to me and said "Don't worry, I'm not going to rob you". I knew I was in good hands. It was near Christmas and the shelter was full. He needed a hot meal. I try to help people retain their dignity, so I offered him a trade. If he helped me get un-lost, I'd buy him dinner and pay him for his trouble. He accepted, helped me find my hotel, got a hot meal large enough for two people, and the last $20 in my pocket.

All-in-all, a pretty positive experience for me, and him too I hope.

High population density, so more people around at any given time to beg money from. Overall expensive cost of living means that the well-to-do residents have more spare change to pass out.

Everything about the area is a "perfect storm" creating ideal bum living conditions. Hell, if I were homeless, I'd put down the crack pipe / bottle just long enough to save for a one-way ticket straight to SF by the cheapest method possible.

Denver has far more days of sun (Number 1 in the country, just ahead of Miami), and despite the occasional freeze/blizzard, is relatively similar.

Their laws coddle the homeless far more than do those in SF. So, why is a traditionally conservative town more friendly to the homeless than a traditionally liberal one?

And yes, it's a fact that Denver is the number one destination in the country for the homeless.
Actually, their laws aren't so much coddling as they are highly progressive.

So it's considered "progressive" to get more bums?

What, do you mean the 3rd richest county in California and the 19th richest in the country, based on per capita income?

Of course Marin is richer, ranking #1 in California and #1 in the country for per capita income.

So all of your red areas are leeching tax money from the "socialists" in California.;)

Huh?

"My" red areas? What makes you think that I like bible thumping hicks?

By the way- California is broke. Let's just face reality here, they're broke. They may bring in a lot of money but they must manage to give even more away. Please don't even attempt to suggest that the red areas of of the US is consuming all that money that California is giving them when in reality California itself has a negative budget and is consuming federal aid.

No, it is a fact that California pays more federal taxes than it receives in federal spending.
It is also a fact that many red states receive more federal money than they pay in.
The state of California is broke, not all of the citizens. Get it?

Yes, the rest of the country is sucking on California's teat. And we are tired of it.

In addition to the relatively supportive atmosphere, there just aren't as many places for the homeless to GO as there are in most suburban neighborhoods. In a suburban city, there are more parks, drainage channels, rivers, bridges, etc. In much of SF, you sleep in storefronts unless you're near Golden Gate Park and can find a bush to hide under. Santa Cruz probably has a larger homeless population per capita, but the proximity to large regional and state parks and the number of homeless shelters means you don't see so many of them on the street at night. But during the day, downtown and the library are thick with homeless folks.

As for weather, there are much better options than SF, even in the Bay Area.

It does? There's hardly any homeless in the socialist European cities I've been to. They were a lot smaller than SF though

No, never been there. Bad there as well?

Homeless in Las Vegas are very rare. They die in the summer.

I thought the goonsquad cleaned them up. I only saw one when we were there on the way into the building, 10 minutes later on the way out he was gone.

No. Just that their laws tend to favor programs that are somewhat successful when it comes to reducing actual homelessness.

realize, of course that "bum" is not the same as homeless, nor could either accurately define hobo.

IIRC, only some 15% of homeless people at any given time are what are considered chronically homeless; what most would call a bum. Whether due to severe mental problems, alcoholism, whatever, they simply can't remain employed for very long--have no family, no support, no ability to take care of themselves, etc. The vast majority of homeless are only homeless for ~1 week at a time. You'd be surprised how many people you see on the street, maybe even at work have actually been homeless at some point in their life.

tent cities have been springing up all across the country over the past year, as well. Shouldn't be too surprising.
