Well fuck, what do you propose we do? Forget about all the injustices of the past so that we can continue to relive them in the future?
.

I'm ranking the chances of ships full of slaves dropping blacks on US shores to work as slaves on plantations very, very, very low.

Well fuck, what do you propose we do? Forget about all the injustices of the past so that we can continue to relive them in the future? Why bother teaching about the holocaust while we're at it? After all, it was so long ago...it never really happened right? Let's just forget about science too because we all know that sky fairies created the world and all its wonders so there's no reason to explore or try to figure these things out.

Well, history is in the past so let's just move on without ever learning from it. It's like dumbfucks have taken control and threw a huge blanket of ignorance over the United States.

Ok so do you propose we have a WWI or WWII month so we can learn those injusticies??? I don't think you're understanding what Morgan Freeman or anyone in here is saying. Why have a month just for Blacks when it's obviously racist since it's just a part of American History? What makes the blacks more special than the whites or asians or indians?

More special? lol they get LESS time discussed in history class than the white man. Do you consider grouping 4 weeks together ahead of the 30+ weeks students get to hear about what the Caucasian man did? What they do is compact it into a bullshit 4 week thing because they know if they spread it out over an entire school year it would end up getting more coverage. I dunno about you but I'd rather make $1,000 a week for a year than $10,000 in one month with nothing more for the rest of the year That in essence is what black history is, a lot at once, but when compared to the big picture it's very very little.

I don't think you can draw many conclusions from a 55 second clip on youtube either. I can appreciate the whole we're all equal thing but if that shit were true we wouldn't be having this discussion would we? It wasn't that long ago that black people weren't even allowed to vote in this country...just a couple years before I was born.

While I agree with Freeman's rigid stance, I still feel that BHM has helped educate a lot of people on a very important part of American History, myself included.

Too bad that's how you view it. Honestly, you might learn a thing or two.

So you'd rather just focus on Black History than general American History since Black History is American History? Why should we focus on any race? That's pretty racist focusing on any race at all. It's just reinforcing that we are indeed different in young people's minds. Pretty sad if you ask me.

I learned plenty, but I knew it was being taught to me only because it was being forced to be taught. Every one of my history teachers from 7th to graduation was pretty much the same. Since none ever brought up black people in history except during the month where they had no choice. It was pretty obvious if there wasn't a month set aside, they wouldn't have wasted their time at all.

Morgan is right, there shouldn't be a Black History Month, but without it kids will not learn about black history. If black history was truly considered American History the government and school system wouldn't segregate it to a month. I don't consider segregation to be something that should be looked at as "ohh unfair they're SPECIAL!" No, it's a show of America still being unwilling to give a person of color their proper respect when it comes to what they did for this country.

bah, I knew it was too good to be true scrolling through so much of the thread without input from this idiot.

Quebert should run for some sort of political office where he is would be in charge of race relations; he has such a clear view.

What's hard to see here? they get FOUR WEEKS out of a school year, a school year is about THIRTY WEEKS, give or take a week. For 27 of those there's zero discussion of black history. Then we get it all bunched up in a 1 month period. And once Feburary is gone, so is black history. Considering all they did for this country, I would say they deserve to be discussed right along side of the rest of American History and get equal time. Not a shitty packaged 1/6th of a school year. I hate the idea of Black History Month, and I hate how I know it's the only way it will get taught in our school systems.

I don't think it's necessarily that. I imagine this whole thing started out with good intentions, but now it's gotten out of hand. Unfortunately, black people are not racist for throwing a negro slur at fellow black people, yet white people are. If the white man doesn't agree with another race's opinion, that man is a racist. I say man because of sexist issues that apply as well.

The ONLY way that we will ever consider everyone equal is to stop talking about race and racism. Stop trying to make amends for crap that happened in the past. Stop trying to appease everyone. You cannot appease everyone, so why bother? You will end up discriminating against someone.

Most people that play the "Equal Opportunity" card piss me off. Going around saying things like "I don't see color" or "I've got several black friends" or crap like that. Why do you try to justify it to make yourself look good? Does it really matter that much? Many people that feel as if they are being discriminated don't care if you've got a racial equal view. They just want to be treated fairly. And by fairly, I mean better than you.

God, no. But why should we promote it into it's month? It's become a joke among many of my friends. The black friends joke about how they should be treated better because it's their month. Sadly, this is how many Americans believe. If we are truly an equal country, don't promote someone over another during a month or a day or anything.

I'm fairly positive we've learned from history regarding slavery and racism. You'll find a few that haven't, but most have. Keep teaching history. Keep teaching our kids about America's past and the problems we've gone through, but don't promote a week or a month about a specific race, gender, creed, religion, nationality, whatever. You won't be teaching about equality then.

This. Education provides self-esteem which is pretty much the whole friggen point. Is there enough self-esteem in enough people yet? Can the training wheels be removed? Everyone will benefit when this happens.

He has a very good point. Once people stop identifying with skin color or race or ethnicity we can become simply human.

uhm thats a crock of bullshit.

We went over history period. All Black history month does is nit pick achievments. IF a white man had invented the traffic signal we would talk about it? the fact it was a black man we do.

History is history. we shouldnt zone in on a race just to make others feel good.

Description by race is often an easy identifier.
If there is a group of white people and one black, asian, latino, red headed, etc. person, you should use their distinction to eliminate confusion.

If there is a group of 6ft tall people and one person who is 3ft, and you need to identify them, what is wrong with calling them the "short guy"?

It's the same as calling someone in a group "The big guy", "The small guy", "The red headed guy", "The guy without front teeth", etc.

Why dance around calling out their race or attributes?
