It's my understanding that it was written in as a concession to allow MLK day to be passed IL as a holiday.
IIRC, it was made a holiday to help someone get the Polish vote from Chicago and win reelection. It had nothing to do with MLK Jr. Day, that I know for sure.

We have a black man that is going to get the democratic nomination for PRESIDENT of the US. The slaves of the US have all died years ago. Why should we have to pay reparations to anyone? Obviously, there are opportunities available to ALL citizens of the US. Reparations are just another hand out. The entitlement attitude in this country is going to be the reason we'll be in 3rd world status in 50 years.

All special treatment needs to be stopped. Even for "native americans". The US has been terrible to ALL non-white people. US citizens of Japanese descent were rounded up during WWII and their houses sold for next to nothing while they were in camps to "protect them". Chinese were practically enslaved to build the railroads. Black people were slaves. Natives where hunted by the "great" Teddy Roosevelt. The only people who of all of those that should be considered for special treatment would be the Japanese who were alive during WWII. All others...forget it. If we can't move on we'll never get any better.
And this is one of the biggest things that pisses me off about people like them. You are not entitled to anything beyond anyone else. I've never owned a slave and you have never been a slave! I don't owe you a thing. You are where you are in life because of your own decisions. I got the same public education you did. I have no sympathy that you chose not to pay attention in class when I did.

i disagree and thinking calling them racist and bigots is out of line.
Sadly if reprations were paid there would still be many that thought they deserve more and would continue to complain and want more and yearly payements etc.
but that brings up who gets paid and by who?

Not that my opinion matters, but I think that having a BET and a NAACP is kind of a slap in the face to their own cause. Having something to purposely remind us of our skin color difference will never allow the color line to blur. Unfortunately for me, I don't think I'll ever see a clear transition because there are always those that are too proud of their own race to allow equal treatment amongst each other.

This is something I dont get and if someone could explain it to me i would appreciate it. My family and ancestors all lived in northern states and never owned slaves. I personally never owned a slave and I have never met anyone who was a slave. I have never promoted slavery any more than anyone I met has ever experienced it.
So who am I supposed to appologise to and for what?
The whole idea of trying to make me feel bad for something that I had nothing to do with is not going to improve the lives of anyone.

Who's trying to make you feel bad? It's so painful to learn about black history that it brings your life down? I don't understand it. Can you explain that to me? I guess I didn't catch the "Apologize to the Black People in February" special on NBC...or was that BET?
