Why do we have black history month?

I made this suggestion before, but no politicians came to ATN&P and read it. I think we need to have a museum in DC like the holocaust museum except for slavery. A very concrete way to record our mistakes and display genuine interest in the subject. Not that it could solve all the problems, but it is still a good start.. or finish. There are probably other ways to make reparations as well. Black History month does seem a bit pandering and meaningless. I wonder what black americans think about it.

Asians were not forced to come to the New World to work, but many were duped by the people who recruited them as indentured laborers. In no way were they treated as badly as the slaves, and most importantly, they came to the new world by choice. Also, they could go back to their homelands once their contracts were up.

But let's face it: many immigrant groups were mistreated when they came to this country. However, none were treated as poorly as the Blacks.

Also, we still need to attempt some type of reparations for the American Indians as they were totally screwed by the govt. Nothing like herding people up and setting them on a piece of land like cattle.

Every intelligent, well spoken, and successful black person I have ever met couldn't give two shits about black history month. They don't bitch about the man keepin them down. They just live life like every other person. They're just regular people.

If you compare the treatment of Blacks and Native Americans, I'd say that the Blacks came away in better condition...
As my uncle told me when I first visited the res, "There are so many more Blacks than Indians because they never did get around to playing "Cowboys and ni**ers."

While I certainly am not saying the Black people were ever treated properly or fairly, (can anyone defend slavery?) by comparison, they still fared better in this country than the native people did.

i have to agree. its sad what they did to the native people did though its hard to take today's morals and ethics and apply them to something that happend 300 years ago.

but i do find it disgusting and sad.

If you say so. Frankly I don't have much animosity towards any particular racial group. Black History Month doesn't bother me in the least and why should it,nothing about it is offensive to me nor does it inconvenience me at all.
