Why do we have black history month?

I'm not really sure what this history month is for. I don't do anything different. I don't scour through history books reading up on the impact of slavery on the black community.

Not to say that's not important, but why aren't there months out there for other races that have contributed to this nation?

Because it's a token gesture law makers could put forth to curry favor with the black community, while costing them barely anything. Not only does the black community hold more clout than most other ethnic groups (they are larger than most except hispanics), but the white liberal population is more eager to please them, so law makers kill two birds with one stone.

I was involved in a student film festival where a group of students from an all-black school drew the genre "Western". They actually did pretty good... until they turned it into a film about weed and womanizing and expensive cars. I don't quite know if the image was intentional in protest of their genre or not, but needless to say it went downhill once they pretty much turned it into a tasteless circus of a film.

That's easy for whitie to say. Our nation has been desegregated for about 40 years of the 231 years our country has existed; and black slavery was around for ages before that. It has barely been one generation since desegregation and you expect centuries of living as second class citizens to evaporate into thin air? Think again.

I believe that when one references BLACK slavery, one could be referring to Black vs Black / African Tribal slavery.

I believe it's strictly an American invention despite our culture's shared involvement in slavery.
The longer poltical hay is made of the marked social disparity between Blacks and Non Blacks in Western Society, by both sides, the longer it will be until real change can be affected.
Actions speak louder than words, when it comes to matters as broadly Humanitarian as this. One simply does the right thing,regardless of someone else's color, or anything, as far as that's concerned.
