IRL, most outspoken atheists I have known (not all that many, really) have been hardcore libertarians.
Hmm, it does make sense, as it too has seen a growing trend, a rise in awareness and practice.
Both ultimately remain in the shadows of the world at large, or in this case, our country. One is rising faster than the other in prominence, and hopefully Libertarians can gain some kind of footing in our political bodies.
Ultimately, I (and many) would loathe to see the day that Libertarian ideals take hold in the country at large... but there are many things to be learned from the ideology of Libertarian politics. There are certain balances that it would help create, but a wholly Libertarian U.S. would probably be just as bad off as we are today.
Which is why we, quite simply, just need a political system comprised of something greater than two parties. I know the Libertarian ideals resist the notion of caucuses and campaign financing... but they truly need to realize there are certain necessary evils to accept if they wish to make a contribution to our future.
However, the heathen I am, I have committed to a digression.
