That's why malak is contemptuous of RPGs -- combat is not user controlled based on hand-eye coordination and reflexes, it's based on the attributes of your characters and their opponents, and resolved by the computer.
The tactical skills used in a RPG involve issuing the proper orders, and planning the use of special abilities or attacks of your party, which is much less adrenaline-fueled and not as satisfying to an FPS junky used to controlling combat more directly.
The other part of tactics and strategy happens before the battle starts, in deciding how to equip your character and how to increase your character's stats. Some people enjoy this for its own sake, some people find it annoying.
. . .
i really enjoyed this - my own - thread.
until now, i really never quite understood what excited some people about RPGs that bored others (me). . . . .
[and of course there are the flight-sim "gamers". . . . i wouldn't
touch a flight sim unless i was going to actually fly the machine] . . . . never cared to understand
that "attraction"
your descriptions of each type of game is excellent . . . .
and i like live "action"

(but am also a good chess player)
i am going to try and "stick with" KOToR to see if i can
broaden my gaming a bit; i really liked SW-JKII:JO and KOToR is a very well-respected RPG . . . .
. . . . if not, it was only $20 and you'll soon see my copy on FS/T
In the meantime, if you can suggest more good FPS games with
elements of RPG besides DE and SS2 (i am still looking out for a copy of SS2) . . . . . please do.

Do you like ANY RPGs?
How far did you get? finish kotor?
