They're relying on the fond memories of oldschool gamers to sell this soulless piece of garbage... I'm actually a little personally insulted by the whole affair.

if it's Oblivion with guns, then it's going to suck ass because Oblivion sucked ass.

Don't need one. Bethesda has been very upfront about butchering the series to make it palatable for console users.

although I do have to say I am kind of excited about Warhammer Online. Sounds pretty damn cool.

I don't really care for MMORPGs, they just suck your time and wallet dry.

I like games like Oblivion and Fallout 3, which exist in a closed universe, which have a set ending. At least you know what you're getting and you don't have to spend your life getting there.

Do you realize that if you buy one game every 3 months, you're still spending more money than you would have if you were paying for an MMO ($50-$60 over 3 months vs $15/month).

Even if you buy one cheap game per month at $20, that still costs more than any MMO subscription ;)

For what you get, MMOs are actually a pretty slick deal. I find it troubling that so many people have financial concerns regarding MMOs. I don't play them because they require too much of a time commitment, which is a far more legitimate reason :p

It's true. Part of the justification for my WoW addiction was that I saved money by not buying anything else. Unfortunately, paying for that course I failed wiped out those savings and put me in red.

But I've then completed 12 different games, and have 12 more games in my game library.

With an MMO you've just grinded away for a whole year, and have nothing.

and other than boxes on your shelf or files on your HD, what do you have?

there's no difference.

The value of the MMO account's character(s) after a year of play will likely be worth more in resell value than the 12 cheap games combined.

Yep. If you play MMOs fairly hardcore, you can usually turn right around and sell your account for a decent chunk of change when you're done once and for all. I was getting sick of WoW last year but couldn't quite bring myself to quit once and for all. Had taken some extended breaks, but eventually always came back.

Then one morning I didn't feel like logging on and was curious to try my luck on Ebay. Spent some time making a nice ad, posted it for a price I thought was fairly silly ($600 bid, $800 Buy Now), then started getting hammered with emails trying to buy it from me direct (a.k.a. scam me). Ninety minutes later, someone clicked the Buy Now button and I quit WoW once and for all. Surprisingly easy to stay quit with a healthy bit of cash in your pocket, too.

Exactly the same thing happened to me when I sold my first WoW account, put it up on Ebay, put a buy it now higher than I ever thought I'd get, and it sold within hours.

Betheseda lost my first day, buy it now dollars with Oblivion. They have obviously gone for the short attention span gamer, and have found a formula for producing pretty, but vapid games. I can't even get myself to play Oblivion with user mods, as many require the extra 'official' add ons. Certainly not going to be giving them any money for Fallout til it gets very very cheap....about what its likely to be worth.

Eh, Bethesda dropped the ball completely with Oblivion. I hated that game, and they lost a devoted Elder Scrolls fan.

I don't really like the changes embodied in Fallout 3 (reminds me a little too much of the empty, crappy game called Oblivion), but I'll at least rent the game to see how the final product is.

And completing 12 different games accomplished what? How is that more of an accomplishment than dumping a lot of time into one game? Keep in mind, most of a MMO is about social interactions anyway, so the "game" changes every day and in the end, you've had just as much fun in one game as you would have had in those 12. It's a wash; there's no difference.

As others have pointed out, in twelve months worth of time you could sell your account for more than you paid for it and then buy all 12 of those games at $10 a piece for huge savings :p

I started WOW when Burning Crusade hit and sold my account 11 months later for $500.

And I didn't miss any of the big games that were released in the meantime, either. One way or another, it's pretty easy to at least break even on a WOW account if you're interested in quitting.

Ah, gotcha. Watching a few videos = playing a game.

I don't get people like you who love bashing the shit out of a game before it's even released. Anyway, enjoy your angst, most of us will probably go have a blast playing it.

I am a fan of the Fallout series and have played all the major realeses for PC. I have many fond memories of the events of the series and have always looked forward to another sequel.

I am excited for Fallout 3 and I think it will be successful. It will be the first major Fallout release on consoles and I expect it to do really well. I will get it for the PC after I have tried it on my console or on someone else's PC. If it does not capture my interest enough, I will come back for it later. I think that the previews have been very impressive and I am personally excited about it being in the DC area. Sorry but California is just not as intriguing a place to visit as DC would be in a Post Nuclear world!

Although I have not finnished playing Oblivion though I played a lot of it, I think that Fallout 3 will be a step above that experience even. As long as it stays a little more linear than Oblivion, I wil be in good shape. The openess of Oblivion was too much for me and I ended up getting to level 46 without even doing the first story quest! Though I heard it was good, Fallout 3 will need to step it up in the story telling to be a hit for me. I think that it has great potential in this area but I am waiting to see the final product before pulling out the wallet.

I probably won't buy, but seeing that this game is probably "Oblivion with guns", I will keep my eye on it with a view to seeing if Elder Scrolls V might be worth getting. I too was disappointed with the dumbing down of Oblivion vs Morrowind. I'd like to see what the differences are, and if Bethesda is heading in the right direction.

Your logic fails. Why do I need to play the game to know it's got little in common with the originals, and that in fact most of what made the originals so great has been removed? I don't need to play it... Bethesda has TOLD us so.

Would you also like me to gnaw my arm off before I tell you that self-amputation is really fucking painful?

It might even be an enjoyable game in its own right, but it's certainly not a Fallout game. That's what I take issue to. I'd have preferred it if Bethesda made this first-person mangled hybrid shooter and just called it something else.

Yeah I'm getting it because it looks like a great game. Oblivion was pretty mediocre originally but a bunch of mods made that one of the best games ever. I'm glad they haven't just based the game around the whims of the old fallout community that just whines about Bethesda killing their franchise. Don't like it? There's no one forcing you to buy the game. Just keep playing Fallout 1/2 over and over.

The bolded part is hilarious :p

Back to the topic. Even though bethesda sais it's not really true to fallout 1/2, it might still be a cool game. Sure, you can be disgruntled about them killing the franchise, but it could still be a cool game :p

Well I never played a previous Fallout game, so I can't really say I have an addiction to the genre. However I love the Elder Scrolls games and played the hell out of Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion. I might give Fallout 3 a shot. Problem is that Fable 2 is slated to release the same day, and there's no way I'm missing that one.

hehe, thanks.

You're right, it could be a fun game in its own right (though my gut tells me it'll be too consolized to have much depth). I just have a lot of angst over the state of the industry, and it spills over when I see something particularly annoying.

Here's hoping it's good enough to be replayable a few times. Not keen on the handheld nukes, exploding cars, and the (mostly) harmless old ghouls from the first games becoming stereotypical Doom-ish monsters.

As long as it has the option of going to turned based fighting, that's all I really care about. (Oh and it's a good game to boot).
