I joined when this forum was AGN3D, before AnandTech. I guess that means I win at being old.

I used to bid for computer stuff on egghead.com and used slickdeals.net, bigbigsavings.com, and AT Hot Deals to stretch my college earnings.

What about good 'ole Pricewatch.com?

The yougins today who get to use sites like PcPartPicker (or Newegg) will have never known the pain of searching for computer parts on Pricewatch. :p

the top 10:

1. formumsadmin
2. unknown, profile not available
3. anonymous
4. forumnotifier
5. Jason Clark
6. Harvey
7. Russ
8. El CID
9. Budman
10. IsOs

you can take the user profile URL and just put in a number without a name:

https://forums.anandtech.com/members/## with the actual number substituted for ##

Holy necro.

R.I.P. #7 - Russ. :(

pricewatch was incredible at the time though

it sure beat using computer shopper magazine
You know you thumbed through it as soon as it came out! :p

I miss those days a bit. It was fun discovering stuff every month. Now, Google has taken the fun out of "the unknown".

I used to buy imported PC Mag in Buenos Aires.

Drooling over hardware not available locally.

Oh hell yes!, I had mine within a day or two of a new issue, I bought my 1st X86 machine from CS, a 16Mhz 386-SX refurb for $400. A few years later my 1st build was an AMD K5 100Mhz machine, it was kind of a challenge, MB jumpers for CPU frequency, voltage, ect. all had to be set correctly or risk that $130 K5 go up in smoke!.

I started on Pricewatch. ...I think I used it through 2005 or 2006, at least.

well, that sure crushed the 75mhz Pentium I that we had in ~93. That thing cost about $1500, but we got a FREE PRINTER from Best Buy!
