A lot of it is, but you can't make a blanket statement like that about anime or American TV shows. Grave of the Fireflies, for example, couldn't be classified as "mindless entertainment".

No, but judging from what I have seen that is an exception to the rule. Also, you are comparing a movie to TV shows. It doesn't work.

Anyway, I treat somebody who watches Pokemon a whole lot better than somebody who watches Survivor.

Wow, not sure what to say about this one. You base how you treat people on their tv show preference? What about me, I think all TV sucks (except for History International :p).
An idiotic waste of a cartoon is definitely better than a show who's entire basis is groups of people stepping over each other and decieving each other.

Most TV does suck. Most of anything sucks.

Hmm, I'm just not too sure about "definately". Reality shows are utter garbage, yes, no one here is arguing that. I'm not even sure why we are talking about reality shows. But an idiotic waste of a cartoon is also garbage.
Yes, but garbage with a sappy feel-good message, even if it is just a marketting method for games and toys.
You anime freaks are exactly like the people who build sandboxes in their living rooms and stick an umbrella in it and a beach chair for when they watch Surivor.
There's no emoticon for my face when imagining such a scene. More like me, in shorts and a T-shirt (1/10 chance of it being a very worn out Allman Brothers shirt) trying to find the remote so I can swap it over to CN, hoping against hope that PPG, Courage, Tom & Jerry, or Looney Tunes is on.

And yes, I think I have seen enough anime to form an opinion, including Cowboy Bebop, Princess Mononoke, Wings of Honneamise, Iria, Evangelion, Akira, could go on and on and on.....[/quote]Bah. Cowboy Bebop is not mindless. I'll leave the others, though. I like a couple, but would agree they are pretty mindless. Princess Mononoke is awesome...but not the most intelligent thing in the universe. Nothing like Hooloovoo. I also don't kid myself that Buffy the Vampire Slayer (one of the few series from a movie worthwhile) is the height of intelectual escapism, but it's still a good show.

I wasn't comparing TV to movies. The discussion was about anime and Grave of the Fireflies is anime. I'll agree that most of just about any video based entertainment is pretty mindless, but not all.

Twin Peaks
...as in this series?

obscenely disproportioned bodies and faces with fish eyes, and parts where the character is still but the background moves.
thats stems from the fundamental differences in the preference between japanese and american crowd. americans (or at least the majority) are known to have no appreciation for cute stuff, i am starting to find out same applies to the most of AT members. moreover, japanese shows concentrate more on 'impression' than mere depiction of reality, no wonder japanese games dominate the industry. i suggest you 'Introduction to Otakuology' by Toshio Okada, its a good read :)

-I just don't find interest in seeing a tentacle come out and fvck a few japanese school girls in catholic school outfits
um yeah... so thats like saying i dont like hollywood movies cuz i dont wanna see sh!t like soul plane  then again hollywood movies DO SUCK :D how you can stand the shallowness of the blockbuster crap is just completely beyond me.

A lot of the new Anime sucks. I dunno....its really boring. I've seen the "must see list" like Ghost in the shell, Spirited away, Grave of the Fireflies and Cowboy bebop. I only liked Spirited away. The other ones were pretty boring IMO. The only animes that I liked as a kid were DBZ, Slam dunk and Captain Tsubasa. The only one I'm still watching is Initial D. I dunno...sports/competition anime are the only ones that I like (Prince of Tennis became kinda boring after watching 70 episodes)

Reading through this thread, I think a lot of people don't realize something.

Just like a lot of people falsely assume there is pretty much one type of geek, a lot of people here falsely assume there is only one type of Anime fan.

The people who like shows like Magical Girl (Sailor Moon) and Super-Kawaii Animes (CCS) are not necessarly the same people who like Mindf*ck anime's (SE Lain, Boogiepop, MONSTER) are not necessarly the same as the people who like Mecha (Gundam) are not necessarly the same people who like romantic comedy (Ai Yori Aoshi, Love Hina) are not necessarly the same people who like Insanity (Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, Kodocha) are not necessarly the same people who like Romance, etc.

There are a LOT of subgroups out there -- and there is a lot of vicious debate amongst them.

Also, I think that it makes sense more to talk about Studio's then it does to talk about genres in many cases. The same group of creators were behind Hack//SIGN, Noir, and Sailor Moon. All three series are worshiped by various group of people, and the studio (Bee Train) is a subdivision of Production I.G., who are most famous for Ghost in the Shell and the animation in Kill Bill.

-Chu

P.S., yes, I'm very biased. I'm VP of one of the largest anime groups on the country here at purdue ;) I think we're actuially 2nd largest after MIT's.

chu, just out of curiousity : what are some of your favorite shows? thats a really good point you brought up there btw, i couldnt agree more with you on that.

Tell me about it. from my observation, especially the series based on visual novels tend to be the subject of heated arguments as they cant make everyone happy and usually opt for more all-encompasing milder version of endings, stroyline and whatnot. (Kiminozo anyone?)

I mean real life, not IRC. Purdue has a HUGE representation in AOne and The Triad though. If you ever see distros from either group named after azumanga characters, they are on purdue's campus ;)

anime is just better cartoons, as american animation is horrendous. it's about as refined as american cars.

what i really hate is "reality" voyeuristic TV.

when the hell did i equate anime haters to reality show watchers?

i was just listing something that is worthy of hate, something that truly is crap.

neither of those are your typical american cartoons, and nobody watches those shows for the animation or effects. same with family guy and futurama, and we all know what happened with those. none of them are exciting or action packed.

for great visuals, check out the 3rd episode of macross zero. (i'm not a fan of macross, but some scenes are stunning)

mmm . . . hard to say. My standsouts though:

Sci-Fi
Two series here stand out above every single other in my opinion. Those are:
Series Expirements Lain
(I probably don't need to comment about this)
The Infinite Ryvius (amv link - Dark Side of the Moon)
This series is incredible, but need some intro. First of all - a lot of people don't get far enough to see it shine. There are about *20* very important characters, and the first 3 episodes are basically introducing all of them, which means they crawl. After that though it picks up speed really fast, and doesn't stop. Also, there comes a point where you really wonder if they can pull off any sort of ending, but they exceed all expectations.

Romance/Comedy
Fruits Baskets I think 99% of romantic comedies in anime are overrated crap, or so full of fanservice its stupid. This is a huge exception. The episodes vary from ridicluous comedy to serious drama, but it does it all very well. The premise is so ridicluous I won't even put it here because it will turn you away -- but somehow they make it believable since the characters are done so well. Also, one note, you really want the fansubs of these (done by furuba) or read the linear notes carefully. Some of these episodes are incredibly confusing without some background on the Zodiac calender. One quick example - one character's alter ego makes zero sense unless you know that in Japanse folklore horsefish are considered baby dragons. The fansubbers have a note on this, but if you (ahem) just watch the DVD's without reading the linear notes it will just fly right past you.

Love Hina (amv link -- Tarzan and Jane)
I really hesistate to put this here. This falls more under ecchi comedy then romantic comedy, but it makes the list for three very important reasons. First, the fact that none of the characters take it seriously at all somehow makes it seem more real . . . you'd have to watch it to see what I'm getting at. Secondly it is excuted masterfully. Third, the characters actuially change and grow throughout the series. Urishima and Naru are very different people at the beginning and the end of the series.

Action
Berserk
Epic storyline, great battles, deep characters, probing themes. No other action series comes close. Too bad they never finished it. The 25th episode even has a next episode preview -- but there is no episode 26.
Noir
I have very mixed fealings about this anime. If it was 13 episodes it would be right up there with Berserk, but at 26 there is just so much filler. You could go from the first episode, to the episode about the stray cat, to the three episodes surrounding Chloe (This takes 14 episodes) and miss almost nothing. Besides that though, I just wanted to put it on the list because the first episode is, in my opinion, the best opening episodes of any Anime. Get it, and see if you want more ;)

Drama
Shingetsutan Tsukihime (only avaliable on fansub as of right now)
This also needs a little bit of background. Tsuki-hime is based around an entire series of doujinshi (of the non hentai type) done by one of the best circles in Japan. The story in the anime is just a small slice of it, involving a boy who can see . . . well . . . its complicated, and hard to communiate without massive spoilers. Just watch it.

Comedy
FLCL
An absolutly insane comedy by GAINAX. Another series that is hard to talk about without giving away spoilers, just watch it. One important note -- this series also has the absolute worst dub I've ever seen. You really want to watch this in the original japanese.
Azumanga Daioh
You will absolute love or complely despise this series. I don't know anyone who has an opinion in between. It basically follows 12 schoolgirls through their highschool lives. Yes, I know this is the premise of a lot of anime, but Azumanga is very special. It was masterfully put together, and has a tendancy to point out the comedy in mudane things. Highly recomended.

Mecca
RahXephon (amv link - Euphoria)
First a note. I hate meccha. That's why I decided to point this series out. The best description of it I have heard is "Evangelion done right." In fact, the first time I saw it I stopped watching after the first episode, because the first episode of RahX and Eva are almost completly identicle. Things start to get much more interesting though, and I won't spoil it. This also definatly falls under the brainf*ck category, very minute details that come up earlier become very important later, blink and you miss them.

The Most Underrated of the Last 3 Years
Haibane Renmei I won't spoil it, just watch it. here is a link to the first episode One note though, the first 4 epidsodes or so are in the same vein, but then the story start to get much darker. It also has an incredible ending. The character design and much of the story was done by ABe, most famous for S.E. Lain and Niea_7.

Also, since I had the space, here are three more AMV's I like for the heck of it:
Battle Athletes - Believe
.hack//SIGN - Kunstliche Welten
AMG - Shining
