Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away

Akira
Ninja Scroll
Vampire Hunter D

A couple of others.

Hell, wat any of Miyazaki's stuff - Princess Mononoke and Spirited away, as already mentioned; there's also Castle Cagliostro if you're looking for a little humor. Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service are good ones too, although these two - along with My Neighbor Totoro - are aimed more at younger kids, I think. My personal favorite though is Nuasiccaa of the Valley of Wind, which hasn't been released here in the US yet.

That said, as much as I like anime, I will agree even with the haters here - some of it really is junk; just not all of it. Same goes for the sub vs. dub debate, IMO - I prefer to watch subs most of the time myself, but some of the dubs are actually good - Cowboy Bebop, for instance.

I can't stand anime. I've seen most of the films and series mentioned in this thread due to friends trying to convert me, but I simply don't get it. Anime's influence also ruined the final fantasy series imo. Kill bill is stupid, maybe a few decent fight scenes, but nothing compared to a real kung fu movie. I want my cartoons to be funny, wacky, and entertaining. Not a flashy, dubbed, soap opera that more closely resembles a dawson's creek episode than a coyote mishap.

As I said, watch Episode 20 of Cowboy Bebop. You should be hooked on anime soon therafter.

refresh my memory - it's been probably a year since I've seen CB - what was #20? (no spoilers needed; just the title to jog my memory)

Why is it that an obsession with Japanese culture and being a computer nerd run hand-in-hand? WTF is the obsession with Japanese culture (anime being part of that)... I just don't get it.

Japanese anime is superior to American cartoons that cater to the short attention spans of the American youth.

Why does liking some Anime have to automatically be related with loving Japanese culture? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. That's like saying that if you like the movies Glory and Cold Mountain that you are obsessed with Civil War history.

Currently, the fastest way (not to mention cheapest) to get anime is over the internet so that will appear to be true.

There you go, you expect it to be something more like the typical american cartoons/something different and it turned out to be something else. I think most of the people that dislike it share that view to some degree.

I'd say about 80% of the stuff being released now is what I consider pure crap... however there are a few that are really good.

The reason is all the crap in Japan gets sold (to recover costs) to U.S. distributors who resell the crap for premium prices. U.S. buyers are left with empty wallets, crap anime, and a sour taste for anime.

Gargoyles, to some extent (though from what I remember, the last season sucked), and another short one that I can't remember....Invasion America maybe? I know it had something to do with aliens, and it was drawn very similarly to Adventures of Superman / Adventures of Batman and Batman Returns, which all came out later.

The Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series own. As said above its like a year 2039 CSI with a myriad of ethics parallels and complexities of government - multiplied with the advance of cyborg technology

Edit: The people who made this series also made the anime-bit in Kill Bill

I don't. I have evaluated anime based on its own merits and came to the conclusion that its crap. I think most people get over American style cartoons by the time they're 12, so they're really not looking for that kind of thing in anime.

The main difference with anime is that there is a continued story line in a lot of the shows. American cartoons rarely ever do that. Besides, saying that you don't like anime is a pretty broad statement. It's like saying that you don't like American cartoons. I'm sure there'd be something in it that you'd like.

OMG Hyperactive Supsonic ADD Chimpokemon Powerup. I must collect them all!

I used to love anime, but now it just irritates me. I guess it just doesn't have that fresh, imaginitive feel that it used to when I was younger. Now it is just a bunch of ADD gun toting naked anorexic chics fighting robots and singing songs. Anime is American cartoons, just aimed at an older audience and throw in an emotional soap opera to boot.

yeah, same here, almost all new anime nowadays feels so recycled/unfresh. and the current character designs are so overused/plain to me.
