I like anime. I've got lots of it. I'm in the midst of the Chobits series currently.

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Ghost in the Shell
Akira
Ninja Scroll
Vampire Hunter D

A couple of others.

Add in Grave of the Fireflies and that is basically the "must see" list of anime.

I don't see what the attraction is with anime. I've seen the first one on that list. I didn't like it. It was boring, and the story was bad.

Try out Ghost in the Shell. If you don't like that, then I would say anime is not for you.

For the most part all media is complete crap. You just need to pick out the good stuff. DBZ and Sailor Moon is just one partin a genre of entertainment that is so huge it encompasses almost everything.

I love it when people say "ALL ANIME IS TEH SUCK!" and then go home and watch reality show after reality show.

GITS can be confusing for someone who's not accustomed to anime. Same with NGE.

Start with cowboy Beebop/Trigun/Outlaw Star. Your typical action with splash of comedy and some plot :)

The problem is, that list above is all just single movies. Movies are usually a lot different than the series's. In a series you got a lot of character development and subplots and stuff going on. Thats what I usually like the most. Some movies are still really good, but a lot just aren't that rewarding. They frequently rush through the plot and have gaping holes that make absolutely no sense at all (like Akira, even though I really like it, it's extremely confusing).

From what little I've seen of Anime I've come to the conclusion that it's no less than total sh*t and well-developed excremental refuse. Of course an anime fan would just say I've not seen the right stuff, but let's get real; I'm a 26 year old reasonably adjusted person. I don't think that it would be possible for me to "get it".

Also a good suggestion. Oh yea, stay away from Akira for a while if you start to like anime.

You need to revise the list, and for god sakes stay away from anime "movies". Probably 5% of anime movies are good, and thats it.

For a good list of animes you should watch, consult http://animenfo.com/statistic/top100.php?l=anime

A very comprehensive list of the GOOD anime series that are out are still going.
My recommendations:

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (season 1 & 2) almost like a near-future CSI/The Shield kinda theme
Scrapped Princess
Last Exile
Great Teacher Onizuka
Hack Sign ( <-- this one is very interesting if you're into MMORPGs or programming)

All good points. I just tend to like the movies the best. Though, I am partial to Cowboy Bebop and Helsing for series.

Akira is confusing because the storyline is so complex IMO.

LOL @ GTO. Too bad they cut it short.

Nothing wrong with anime movies, especially the one thats based from an existing series. They usually have better artwork and plot too.

Of course if you only care for specific aspect, there's an anime for you too:
Initial D for racing fans
<insert GONZO titles> for CGI
Love Hina for slapstick comedy from start to finish
Maison Ikkoku for never ending romance story....
etc,etc,etc,etc

I've only found a couple that I like, such as cowboy beebop and trigun.
But most of them are horrible.

I used to like Dragon Ball Z when I was 17 or so. Other than that, I don't really like Anime.

I could honestly care less about watching anime series. I don't watch television shows so why would I watch anime shows? I'm a movie guy.

BTW, has anyone seen 'Voices of a Distant Star'? The plot sounds interesting but I'm usually wary about anime and ask opinions before renting.

Have to add "Grave of the Fireflies" that is a great one as well...

Honestly, I have seen some anime that is just plain bad, but I would say overall anime is WAAAYYY better than a lot of crap thats out on american cartoon channels...

Top notch aerial battle CGI, slow romantic storyline.
