This insolvency has been developing for more than a decade. Anyone who didn't see it coming is a fool. As for fleeing the failed state, I left at the end of 2006, and the price to rent a moving truck out of CA was far more expensive than the cost to move in. Supply and demand is a telling sign. The exit door is swamped.
This sort of highlights an emerging trend - Democratic gains among upper middle and upper class voters. Long a GOP stronghold, the Dems have made significant gains among these people.

That's the beauty of deficit spending - you can allow the rich to be in favor of generous gov't benefits without actually asking the rich to pay for them. No wonder the rich are leaving the GOP. I don't think many people here understand the way California's budgets work.
It's easy for people who shriek and whine about how terrible California's politicians are, how they should all be kicked out for being so bad with money, etc. What most people don't realize is that it is the proposition system that is largely at fault here. Idiotic things like Proposition 98, which forces the legislature to spend about 40% of the state budget on education each year, and even worse sets the previous year's spending as the floor for the next year. When your economy grows education spending goes up but when it shrinks education spending doesn't come back down, blowing huge holes in the budget. Not to mention that the money being thrown to education isn't being given to it for a program that justified its use, it's just being given first... find a use later.

Those "special" Texans must be a heck of a lot smarter than Californians, considering Texas' economy is actually growing in spite of the "worst economy since the Great Depression", and Texas doesn't have a budget deficit of tens of billions of dollars.

Oh and yes, Texas is a shithole. Not only is the state itself nasty, but it's filled with some of the fattest people on earth. (Texas is the 6th fattest state, California is the 31st)

As for Texas' economy growing, I'm very happy to hear that it is. I also never claimed that it wasn't. It doesn't change the fact that the state is an awful place to live. Hellishly hot, far away from most cultural centers (except Austin, good job Texas!), the population is poorly educated, being significantly below the national average in both high school and college graduation rates, the people are horrifically obese, and aggressively proud of it. There's a lot more to a state than its economy, and Texas is a terrible place for all those other reasons.

I know right...this guy is a tool. I find it very hard to believe that the fourth largest city in the US (Houston, TX) has no culture.
You're right, Houston also has a good cultural scene. I still stand by my general statement though, and you couldn't pay me to live in Texas. If I were caught in a bear trap within Texas state lines, I would totally gnaw my leg off in order to escape.
