This is probably what's going to happen. The feds will just turn on the Magic Money Machine one more time and print out a couple billion to get CA over the hump.

Yup, because it is SO HORRIBLE to live in place with low taxes, a budget SURPLUS and an economy that is thriving, not dying.

Stay in California, please. Except now the rest of the nation has to bail out the failed great socialist experiment.

This insolvency has been developing for more than a decade. Anyone who didn't see it coming is a fool. As for fleeing the failed state, I left at the end of 2006, and the price to rent a moving truck out of CA was far more expensive than the cost to move in. Supply and demand is a telling sign. The exit door is swamped.

This sort of highlights an emerging trend - Democratic gains among upper middle and upper class voters. Long a GOP stronghold, the Dems have made significant gains among these people.

Pre-election Wash. Post article

Post-election results showing Dem gains among the wealthy

That's the beauty of deficit spending - you can allow the rich to be in favor of generous gov't benefits without actually asking the rich to pay for them. No wonder the rich are leaving the GOP. With the Dems, I can have an inflated view of my own social consciousness, without feeling any pain at all in my wallet!

Obviously you haven't been to San Diego.

:)thumbsup:)

Only the weather is slightly better and things are cheaper but LA is better in every way. Everything is within close driving distance.

'Close driving distance' doesn't equal 'a place you will get to in a short period of time while driving'. San Diego also doesn't have hellish traffic everywhere.

I'm typing this from Ocean Beach down in SD right now, it's the happiest place on earth.

I don't think many people here understand the way California's budgets work.

It's easy for people who shriek and whine about how terrible California's politicians are, how they should all be kicked out for being so bad with money, etc. What most people don't realize is that it is the proposition system that is largely at fault here. Idiotic things like Proposition 98, which forces the legislature to spend about 40% of the state budget on education each year, and even worse sets the previous year's spending as the floor for the next year. When your economy grows education spending goes up but when it shrinks education spending doesn't come back down, blowing huge holes in the budget. Not to mention that the money being thrown to education isn't being given to it for a program that justified its use, it's just being given first... find a use later.

This is why the proposition system is bad. People don't think of the consequences of their actions, they enact foolishly overbroad policies (Prop 98, Prop 13), and then they wonder why the legislature has a hard time balancing the budget.

More personal attacks and insults, ignoring the facts and the truth.

Keep up the status quo.

Those "special" Texans must be a heck of a lot smarter than Californians, considering Texas' economy is actually growing in spite of the "worst economy since the Great Depression", and Texas doesn't have a budget deficit of tens of billions of dollars.

Phoenix. Close enough and lots of sunshine.

Deserts are never a good place to live.

L.A. is in a desert, too.

Do any of you people have the slightest idea what socialism is? Please provide the definition, and then explain how California is socialist.

Oh and yes, Texas is a shithole. Not only is the state itself nasty, but it's filled with some of the fattest people on earth. (Texas is the 6th fattest state, California is the 31st)

More personal attacks again...calling Texas insulting names, making fun of Texans...

Once again ignoring the facts and truth.

This gets tiring.

http://www.texasahead.org/economy/outlook.html

"According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the U.S. economy peaked in December 2007 and has been in recession since then. Nevertheless, Texas fared well in fiscal 2008 (September 1, 2007 ? August 21, 2008), when its gross product expanded more than twice as fast as the nation?s (4.2 percent versus 1.9 percent).

Texas? economic growth thus far in fiscal 2009 has been much slower. The Comptroller?s office estimates that the Texas gross state product will expand by just 1.8 percent throughout fiscal 2009. The U.S. economy, by contrast, is on track to shrink by 0.9 percent over the fiscal year."

So while the rest of the US economy is shrinking, Texas' economy is actually still growing.

Yup, what a horrible place!

The truth hurts, hence, the personal attacks and insults. That's all you have!

Edit: Forgot to edit out childish profanity from the OP.

No, but apparently you happen to be too lazy to use the dictionary or are unable to understand the definitions inside of it. You said California is 'socialist'. Now I'm asking you to support your statement: Define socialism and then show how California is socialist. How hard is that?

As for Texas' economy growing, I'm very happy to hear that it is. I also never claimed that it wasn't. It doesn't change the fact that the state is an awful place to live. Hellishly hot, far away from most cultural centers (except Austin, good job Texas!), the population is poorly educated, being significantly below the national average in both high school and college graduation rates, the people are horrifically obese, and aggressively proud of it. There's a lot more to a state than its economy, and Texas is a terrible place for all those other reasons.

the way you use 'cultural center' i have to wonder if you have any idea what it means. houston has far more high culture than austin does. just about all the culture in austin is provided by UT in terms of museums, ballet, musicals, opera, etc. houston has far more museums than austin and more live theatre (you know, opera, broadway tours, etc.) seats than anywhere in the country except new york.

but just continue with your provincial myopia.

In plain English for you, since you obviously have very poor reading comprehension:

Tax the producers (working taxpayers) and redistribute the wealth to the non-producers (social services, AKA welfare).

You're right, Houston also has a good cultural scene. I still stand by my general statement though, and you couldn't pay me to live in Texas. If I were caught in a bear trap within Texas state lines, I would totally gnaw my leg off in order to escape.

Hahaha. Nice job taking the #3 definition to the word, editing it to remove the fact that it was referring to Marxist theory, and not even mentioning the #1 definition of community ownership of the means of production. That is unless you are attempting to claim that the US operates under Marxist theory.

All that dishonesty and selective quoting aside, I can still beat you up the same way I was going to. I've already showed you how your previous statement was stupid but you still haven't put two and two together. If California is a 'socialist experiment', then what is Texas? Texas has welfare and social programs too, you know. Since Texas' economy is still growing, I guess the great socialist experiment there has succeeded!

It says there are approximate 6.3 million kids. The Department of Education's budget is $56.8 billion. That means it costs approximately $9,000 dollars a year per kid.

:Q

That's pretty close to the national average. That's also a lot more than Japan and South Korea spend per student. We're not getting much of a return on that investment.
In Rochester, NY it's in the low teens per student. Want to know what the highschool graduation rate is? 39%.

I should have not even wasted my time. Any response I would have provided would have been immediately insulted and discredited. It's a typical tactic from the left, and I fell for the bait. That's my bad.

You have already shown your true colors. Please, stay in California.
