Well, I just got the RAID controller (BroadCom 4852 8-port SATA for $365), plus 7 250gb hd's for a 1.5 TB RAID 5 array @ $125 each. So, $1240.
Tas.

7 250GB drives?

I'd go with 4 400GB drives.

You would end up paying more for 5 400GB drive, than you would 7 250GB drives. You have to have 1 extra drive for fault tolerance for a RAID 5 array. :)
Tas.

Who said I want a RAID 5 array?

I just want 1.5TB for High-Def storage.

Just before I clicked "vote" I said to myself, "I know porn is going to be the #1 answer."

Lo and behold, I was right.

You couldnt afford the machine time.

*I* cant afford the machine time!

Its amazing what an IBM system can do. I ran 22 million records through address correction software in just under 4 hours.

I'd either have a lot of crap or a lot of Free Space. I have 160gb right now and when it fills up I can just go and delete/uninstall all the demos/games I previously installed, but never played more than once. That always frees up plenty of space for stuff I actually want.

Yeah, thats only like...uhh... 4300 episodes of stargate :p

Well, all seasons combined might be *something* like 70GB, maybe.
But I wouldn't know, obviously.
I have many seasons on real DVD bought with real money.

Already have 1.8 TB of aerial imagery on our servers. Getting another 4-5 Terabytes by the year's end. Time to order some more disk modules for the SAN.

Since I'm the director of the department of redundancy department I'd backup the backup of the backups...twice.

Ouch, If I was down to 1.5GB of space I would quickly purchase 500more GB of space so that I can hold all my files.
