Well, I just got the RAID controller (BroadCom 4852 8-port SATA for $365), plus 7 250gb hd's for a 1.5 TB RAID 5 array @ $125 each. So, $1240.

I'd go with 4 400GB drives.

You would end up paying more for 5 400GB drive, than you would 7 250GB drives. You have to have 1 extra drive for fault tolerance for a RAID 5 array.

I'd either have a lot of crap or a lot of Free Space. I have 160gb right now and when it fills up I can just go and delete/uninstall all the demos/games I previously installed, but never played more than once. That always frees up plenty of space for stuff I actually want.
