took the kids to see it over the weekend. both kids loved it! my son keeps singing "everything is awesome!"

I had to buy this song and put it on my daughter's iPod, she keeps singing it too. :)

I'm glad all of you liked the spaceship guy. For those that aren't as much of a geezer as me, you may not know that he is from the old Lego Space theme, which came out in 1978 right when I was growing up. I had a ton of those legos as a kid, so it was great to see that nod to my childhood.

I agree that Batman was funnier than the spaceship guy.

I had TONS of the space legos. I thought it was hilarious that spaceguy's helmet was broken; ALL of my spaceguys looked like that.

Anyway, we saw the movie over the weekend and I thought it was great.
The whole "dad sucking the fun out of everything" storyline really caught be off guard; I actually found it really touching. As dad's, it's so easy for us to get consumed by our daily stresses and we can forget to just chill out and take time BE kids with our kids.

Aikouka: re: second spoiler tag. I'm sorry you feel that way about LEGO. LEGO is very much about creating, not just pounding out projects while following directions. My kids have about 25lb's of LEGO's that they are free to build whatever they want with. These LEGO's are from the late 80's and the 90's, and still provide countless hours of entertainment for my boys.

He was talking about today's Legos, and he's dead right. The Legos I grew up with (80's, 90's) were great. I never followed the instructions and just built whatever. When my kids were of Lego age, I was so stoked to buy them Legos (mid/late 2000's). It sucked. 85% of the pieces in those kits are specialty pieces with only one plausible purpose: fitting into its place in the box's intended design. It wasn't until they had amassed TONS of Legos from TONS of different kits that there were enough generic pieces to do much.

i dont get you people complaining about specialized sets. there are still plenty of ways to just get generic blocks.

there are also still the classic town / police / firehouse / etc types of sets.
and all the legos i ever remember that we got were 'sets'. car set, house set, town set. we did the same thing then (30 years ago) as my minions are doing now, build the set once as you are supposed to, and then bust it up and build whatever.

my son has gotten probably 20 lego sets, from lord of the rings, to the monster hunter ones to star wars and while they may have a few specialized pieces, there is NO WAY they are 85% special parts. he builds them per the instructions once, and then takes them apart and adds them all together in a big pile to do whatever he wants with them. it's the same now as it was then.

we got my kids just boxes of bricks. one year he got 3 2000 box sets. it's insane.

though the sets we build and play with. the only ones he hasn't taken apart are the star wars ones. we keep those on top of the desk.

Getting your kid a huge tub of pieces doesn't exactly scream "fun" though. And I wasn't exagerating with the 85% figure, either. I bought him any number of spaceship / rover / robot sets, and most of the pieces are useless for any purpose other than what's on the front of the box.

Contrast that to when I was a kid and I got a "spaceship" set from that period... you could build endless versions of that spaceship / spacestation / etc. Those sets were awesome. But today, it seems like Lego is trying to make the project on the box look much more realistic, which means getting away from a blocky profile.

Like others have said, this simply isn't true.

I saw the movie yesterday. It was just as dumb as the previews. :|

It was also just as fun as the previews!

I thought it had a decent story, and was done super well. Tons o'fun.

Except when the little kid got up and walked around the theater, calling out "Daddy" repeatedly while the parent did nothing until a stranger picked her up and was going to take her outside to the staff. THEN the dad stood up to collect her. Very inconsiderate of the father. It probably went on for 3 minutes. which is like 3% of the movie!

Like others have said, it simply is true. Works both ways, eh?

At any rate, it's not like their rep for this being true is just a huge conspiracy. Lego kits are far less flexible than they were when I was a kid. We didn't all get together one night and decide to start hating on Legos

There is absolutely no way that movie is better than Frozen. And RT scores for these kinds of movies usually go down over time as people other than die hard fanboys decide to go.

Frozen 89% with 179 reviews

Lego Movie 96% with 167 reviews

Are you still holding out hope that those last dozen reviews will be horrible? ;)

Not sure what sets you buying. My kids have quite a few new sets, they break them down and put them together however they want. The only two sets they keep together are the Police Station and the City Garage. All the characters and the vehicles from the new sets are put together once the way they're instructions say, then the kids go nuts with them. They're pretty creative the way they build them back together.

I'm sorry if you have lost your imagination :(

If generic pieces is what you want. Just buy blocks.

Finally caught this movie over the weekend. I have to say---I was a bit disappointed.

I LOVED the movie, but I'm also an avid Lego fan. My wife and kids however are not very familiar with Legos and didn't understand half of the jokes. My wife ended up falling asleep and my son kept asking me "what are those number codes they keep seeing?"

So, the movie is very well done and impressive in its scale, but it's not 100% accessible, making me surprised it's being rated so highly.

PS- Batman and the Star Wars cameo are fantastic :D

I finally saw it this weekend (if you wait long enough, you don't have to put up with the kids) and I enjoyed it immensely. The writers perfectly nailed what a LEGO movie should be; bricks, building, and a whole lot of self-referential humor. Also: Star Wars.:p

That was actually Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams too :D They tried to get Harrison Ford but he was "busy", according to the producers.

Caught this with the boys over the weekend. Its a really good movie. Got home and decided it was time to add my stash of legos from my childhood to theirs. So they just got a giant tub filled with tons of castle, space, pirate and city Legos from the mid 80s to early 90s.
I had 2 big rubbermade bins full of them, but one of the bins vanished over the years through a ton of moves. But luckily the bin i did have included a ton of random bricks, all my people and castle stuff as well as the base plates.
Theyre happy campers.
