I hear ya brother- AMEN! It seems like the new generation is downgrading everything and enjoying it: music quality sucks due to MP3's and they eat 'em up, texting slows communication 10 fold and they see it as the way to go, quality TV and movies are being replaced by 2 minute video clips of a guy lighting his farts or squashing his sack...the world is going to be a scary place when these kids take over.

Well lets see, I can either carry around my music on an mp3 player or I can get the new walkman record player. It does 33's and 45's.

There are other methods of digital recording- it's just MP3's caught on. There is so much compression in recorded music today (even on CD's), that a lot of the feeling and ambience of the recording is lost forever. The music crowd today doesn't know any different because that's what they grew up with, but it's sad when a stick with a diamond chip being dragged along a disk of vinyl can produce more sound than the widely available technology today.

its really not that sad. Don't you get it? Nobody misses records or record players. You are one of like a dozen people on the planet that are distraught over this.

::bangs head on desk:: Don't YOU get it? We could be using something like FLAC instead of MP3s to record digital music, and this wouldn't happen. Most of the younger generation (including you obviously) is perfectly content with their 128bit MP3 files, and it's a step backwards.

I REPEAT NOBODY CARES. NOBODY CARES.

<<<< has vinyl collection and used to own 2 technics 1200's with 120 dollar sylii

I still dont care. Its good enough. Mp3 isn't permanent it will evolve like every other medium.

Nobody is doing anything to improve MP3 quality- if anything it's getting worse. Read up and get educated:

Agreed. Sometimes I don't necessarily need an immediate response or I don't want to get sidetracked with chit-chat. Text messaging helps with that.

I HATE talking on the phone. Texting is the way to go. You can text anywhere, but some places its too loud to talk on the phone.

less lossy compression means not being able to store as many songs. we don't have the portable storage space to hold our entire collection if the songs were in something other than mp3 format. I know I couldn't fit quite a bit of my collection onto my 30gb zune if I were using FLAC (assuming if FLAC or something else was actually popular and supported in this strange version of reality that has been thought up). MP3, between 192k and 320k does good enough job when storage is taken into account. If storage was not a concern, I doubt MP3 would have caught on as well as it did. But that's why it caught on, and not a lossless or less-lossy format.

as far as texting, as others have said, its a convenient and is great when you aren't really wanting to be tied to a phone... like when driving. :p i kid i kid
but seriously, say in class, or on a bus, or at a friends place or at a restaurant or numerous other places. Or simply it's a quick question that doesn't even need to be answered right away or you don't really want to call for something so meaningless. And it's also great, as a student, when you know there is a chance the other person is tied up somewhere that they couldn't answer a phone but could check the text fast enough to see if its something urgent. I've done that many times, opened my phone to check the message, determined its not important and respond when I'm less busy.
Now, I don't go around having conversations that last 40 texts.. mine are usually just quick questions or responses to a quick question from a friend. one girl i was talking to for awhile, however, was freaking obsessed with texting and hating talking on the phone. so much so that she dragged me into it and we'd have damned conversations over text. rather annoying, because I'll sometimes multi-task while on the phone, but while texting I have to devote those few moments to the phone and when it is a conversation, I might as well do nothing because I can't really accomplish much in between texts. Thankfully, I haven't encountered another person like her, one who is so damned obsessed with texting.

really though that shit does annoy the shit out of me, my sister is BAD about it..

i can be trying to explain something to her, and she'll have to pause like 10 times to reply to text messages within a one minute window....

and then she's like "huh i didnt get that, explain it again"

I could text all I wanted, but I don't particularly care to. I prefer to either talk to the person or contact them over the net. Texting is next to pointless. The only thing that it really matters for is my friends who don't have internet access and can't be on the phone. That's only a couple though. I'm 17 btw, typical high school student. Everybody texts in all of my classes.. heartbreaking.

Maybe you don't know how to text and that's why you think it takes longer to text than call. I like texting because I hate phone calls. You wanna talk about extraneous "Hey, what's up?" bullshit? Phone calls are all about it. When I text I get right to the point, no dicking around, and then it's on the other person's timetable to reply. That's the beauty of it. If they're busy, they'll get back to me later, and I don't have to waste two phone calls of the ridiculous small-talk to get one piece of information.

personally, im 100% behind what you say. but if im bored, or at work (computer tech) i have lots of down time in between spyware scans etc etc, so i just flip open the phone and text some ppl to pass the time. but out of work when im hanging out with ppl and you can't even hold a 2 min convo with them without them texting, it can get annoying.

so all in all, ALONE , texting ftw, but non-stop texting when you are IN a social environment (w. friends etc) is realllllyyyyy annoying. sometimes i wanna be like WTF YOU SHOULD OBVIOUSLY BE HANGING OUT SOMEWHERE ELSE IF U CANT GO 2 MIN WITHOUT REPLYING U STUPID **#*#*#* lol ok sorry carried away there...

HERES MY SUMMARY OF THIS MONTH:
Messaging
Sent Received
IN Text 486 471
Other Text 1114 1144
Other PIX/FLIX 10 13

so all in all, I text alot, (5000 or so a month) but, also hate it, so im on both sides of this one.

For the most part I agree with you, but I text pretty often myself. Sometimes it is in fact more convenient to say some things through text messaging rather than on the phone.

i use it pretty often with a friend or two thats often too busy to talk on the phone, but not so busy we cant shoot a message back and forth a few times a day

my sister was fond of it because if she didnt want to talk to someone she could just text them some excuse without having to deal with them.

its a quick way of sending someone a message without leaving a voice mail. also, its easy to check a txt message in class or at work rather than holding the phone to your ear and listening to the voice mail.

My reasons for texting:

1) It doesn't use my daytime minutes
2) It lets me think of what I'd like to say succinctly, and forces others to reply in kind (i.e., succinctly)
3) I can reply as/when I see fit
4) Somewhat related to #3, it doesn't require talking, so you can do it without bantering on in an annoying loud voice

Wtf, it's a novelty man. It brings with it the same sorta deal that AIM does, you can make chit chat, privately, and you have an easier time saying anything questionable.

I'm more concerned about the death of headroom rather than MP3 lossiness.
