Same here although my daughter is currently 14 ... aside from with her the only times I text are when sending quick directions or a phone number etc.

Which would be more annoying? The constant tapping of buttons for 30 minutes, or a simple 30 second phone call? Obviously, anyone would go with the second choice. How about you strap the burden on yourself, and get a clue.

I disagree. How is "button tapping" so annoying? Plus, 30 minutes of texting does not equate to a 30 second phone call. How about 10 30 second phone calls vs 30 minutes of texting?

From the time you send 10 text messages to see how they are doing, how their dog is, and whatever else you decide to put in there, their respond time, it should equate to ~30 minutes.

I can type on my phone nearly as fast as I can on my keyboard. And again, a long conversation like that will take longer than 30 seconds by phone.

do you type really slow? :p I don't doubt that your fast, it would just seem like you probably could still type faster on a keyboard than you could on a blackberry or such.

For me, Sometimes texting is just more convenient than a call. Especially with someone end up chitchatting with you anytime/everytime when you call them and all you need is a yes/no answer.

Besides, i'd rather have teens texting each other than actually have to listen to some of their inane banter. If it wasn't texting the teens that are annoying you would be doing something else to piss you off anyway.

they can't even put the cell in their pocket, they carry it in their hand and then just leave it sitting on the desk to look cool so when it vibrates everyone knows.

I'm not much of a texter (my plan only allows 125 a month, and I never come close to going over) but as one of many BlackBerry users out there, I can see the value of texting over a voice conversation. It allows you to be more efficient with getting a message across, and detracts you far less from whatever else you're working on. Add the ability to broadcast one message to multiple recipients and it becomes quite the useful little tool.

You whine too much. Mind your own business.

I text other people who are in the same meeting when there are things I don't want to people on the other side of the table to hear.

I just hate it how these fucking people can't go 2 feet without having their cell phone on them, because they might get a text message. Honestly, what do people actually have to say other than "HAY SUP?? LO!LL!!" I would say that a good 90% of text messages have absolutely no meaning to them.

I asked a few people why the text so much, and they say that it's "more convenient." or "It's easier to say things over text message." How is it easier? It takes you 30 minutes to ask somebody what they're doing today, when you could spend 90 seconds asking them.

Another thing, when you're trying to make conversation, and their cell phone goes off (usually some dumb fucking teen bopper song) they jump towards it like it's going to fly off if they don't pick it up in 2 seconds.

Right after that, the conversation ends, because they're to busy texting about how their day has been going, or some other fucking thing.

I can understand why they made it. For instance, person A was in a meeting, had to tell person B that they are going to be late.

That is all.

YOU DAMN KIDS BETTER GET OFF MY LAWN!

You're rivaling the OP in inconsequential things to bitch about. Take some Ritalin and focus on the lecture.

Find some friends and try texting first.

Texting > trying to get someone on the phone esp on something you don't need handled right then or a response.

Texting just like other things can be abused and can have a good purpose. Although I do agree that the damn ringtones can be annoying at times which is why my phone is always on vibrate unless I'm expecting an important call and I might miss the gentle hum :).

Definitely. Rewatched it a bit ago when I bought it on Blu-Ray :D (which it looks no better, but it sounds cooler to own it on that ;)).

::bangs head on desk:: Don't YOU get it? We could be using something like FLAC instead of MP3s to record digital music, and this wouldn't happen. Most of the younger generation (including you obviously) is perfectly content with their 128bit MP3 files, and it's a step backwards.

Umm mp3s were convenient because they were around 1mb/min of music. For example, I had dial-up for a long time and I didn't mind spending 30 minutes downloading a good song, but would I want to spend hours download a FLAC of the same song? No thanks.

Convenience > Quality for 95% of the population.

Convenience is only greater to people to a degree. Surely you didn't enjoy trying to find a song on a cassette tape? The reason CD smooshed tapes is simply that it provided easy to find tracks with good audio quality and the idea of "flipping it over" was unheard of :p.

I take my wallet out when I sit down quite often. It is uncomfortable to sit on.

While CDs did provide better quality, I'd say the primary reason they demolished tapes was because you could easily skip from track to track. Sure, people liked the boost in quality, but the ability to access any song at any time with almost zero delay is what pushed CDs to the forefront of music formats.

Plus you didn't have to flip sides to listen to a full length album.

Text messaging does have benefits. The largest being that it's asynchronous. I can send someone a text message to say that I'm running late or that a meeting location has changed and they don't need to be at their phone when I send the message in order to receive it. Checking text messages is also much easier and faster than checking voice mail.

I hope you realize these same idiots texting 20+ times back and forth would be having the exact same conversation over the phone. Now, ask yourself, which one would be more annoying?

On the flip side, normal people use text messages for simple conversations that dont really need a phone conversation. Do I really need to call 10 of my friends to see what they are doing on a friday night? Oh i know, I can send them a quick text to find out and go from there. Talking on the phone is annoying and time consuming, sending 1 or 2 text messages is convenient and easy.

Get a clue.

Which would be more annoying? The constant tapping of buttons for 30 minutes, or a simple 30 second phone call? Obviously, anyone would go with the second choice. How about you strap the burden on yourself, and get a clue.

You're still not getting it. I spelled it out originally but you seemed to ignore it the first time, so here it is again. There are two types of text conversations. The first is teeny-boppers sending 20+ texts back and forth about nothing, and I agree that this is pretty silly. However, wouldn't you rather see them texting or listen to them talk about inane bullshit for 30 minutes. By all means, let them text away so I don't have to listen to them speak.

The other type of texting, involving simple one-off messages, has been described ad nauseum in this thread and I don't think I need to go over that again.

You seem to think that if the teeny-boppers arent texting, they will have a 30 sec conversation, which is simply not the case. Please stop confusing the two.

I don't mind the texting (unless some jack ass is doing it while driving a car). However, the quoted part annoys the shit out of me.

text messaging is easier when you do not require an immediate response from the other party. much like email (or even snail mail) messaging.

but there are always people who are obsessive/compulsive and have to text/email on their phones every minute of every day of their lives.
