One thing about text messages is you don't have to drop everything and immediately become responsive. There's an expected lag to them, like email or instant messaging. Whereas if the person calls you then you have to stop what you are dong and pick up the phone. I guess you could just let it go to voicemail, then go check the voicemail, but that would waste the time of the person that called you as they have to sit there listen to your message and wait for the beep. If they text you, as soon as they hit send, it's done until you respond.
Now teenagers of course love the technology and will drop everything for to answer the text message which isn't the real reason they were created. The other thing about text messaging is it's cheaper than a phone call. If you're calling someone outside your network you end up using minutes on your phone whereas a text message uses no air time.

For me, personally, with free text messaging, I can talk to my friends outside of my service provider without paying for calls. Plus it's more convenient because it's a message, if you need to you can check up on it later. So I can use text messaging to alert me when someone has done something in certain websites or for events.

Plus there's always the funny random messages you get.

Yeah that is another good thing about them. I'll send a text to my friend if she's at work, during the day, cause I don't feel like bothering her if she's busy and I don't need an immediate response anyway (like asking if she wants to get some food after work).

I was dating a chick years ago when the Side Kick came out and all she'd do was text me to communicate. I'd talk with her and we'd hang up and she'd text me something! WTF we were just talking!!!

And I was 24 then, not some 14 year old.

I had a regular cell phone and it was a PITA! That amount other reasons is why I called it off.

I got started texting in high school, cuz we had a local carrier that offered 100% free texting on ALL plans, including prepaid, so half the kids bought a prepaid phone, put no extra minutes on it, and just used it for free texting. It was pretty much the only way we communicated.

Nowadays, like others have said, its just convenient. If its Friday night and I'm trying to see what's going on, I can send the same text out to 10-20 people at once. I can send a quick message to someone while I'm at work, in general texting is a lot less invasive than a phone call....you can get to it when you get to it. Plus, sometimes, I just don't really want to talk to someone. I hate talking on the phone.

let's give up Instant Messaging too! we'll just have a long list of phone numbers on our computer of people we have to make phone calls to when asking simple questions that take 2 txts to complete!

I haven't owned a cell phone since 1995 and don't have any plans to ever get one again. I don't want to be that accessible. But it doesn't bother me the people that use them, especially texting; I'd rather see them pressing buttons than hear them yapping away.

I don't have, or need, a cell phone. I've considered getting one to have in the car for emergencies, mostly because I've got kids. I don't feel the need to communicate that much - with anyone. Quality > quantity.

I've sent exactly one text message - and it was an email-to-text pager, before blackberries.

It IS annoying though - I've seen it while driving, and a couple weeks back at a Kathy Griffin show there was a 20-something next to me that was texting through the whole damned show. She had a tone at first when she'd receive messages, turned it off after I told her it was annoying... some 20+ messages into the show. The seats were arranged, and she sat and 'typed' such that I could hardly miss watching what she was texting - it was a constant stream of "OMG she's SO funny" "what should we do after the show" "What did you wear?". I assume her little friend was elsewhere in the theater.

Annoying.

I hope you realize these same idiots texting 20+ times back and forth would be having the exact same conversation over the phone. Now, ask yourself, which one would be more annoying?

On the flip side, normal people use text messages for simple conversations that dont really need a phone conversation. Do I really need to call 10 of my friends to see what they are doing on a friday night? Oh i know, I can send them a quick text to find out and go from there. Talking on the phone is annoying and time consuming, sending 1 or 2 text messages is convenient and easy.

Get a clue.

There are other methods of digital recording- it's just MP3's caught on. There is so much compression in recorded music today (even on CD's), that a lot of the feeling and ambience of the recording is lost forever. The music crowd today doesn't know any different because that's what they grew up with, but it's sad when a stick with a diamond chip being dragged along a disk of vinyl can produce more sound than the widely available technology today.

It's great at bars and concerts. I can't hear what you are saying on the phone, and your stupid ass couldn't find the place. Text message the address. Easy.

its really not that sad. Don't you get it? Nobody misses records or record players. You are one of like a dozen people on the planet that are distraught over this.

It's cheaper for me, as calling is a pain when you only want to say one or two things. Kinda hard to do that over the phone without it sounding awkward.

::bangs head on desk:: Don't YOU get it? We could be using something like FLAC instead of MP3s to record digital music, and this wouldn't happen. Most of the younger generation (including you obviously) is perfectly content with their 128bit MP3 files, and it's a step backwards.

I don't like 128kbit MP3's, I try to record mine at 240-360, but if I have the choice of 1,000 128kbit MP3s on my 4oz MP3 player, or 10 analog songs on a huge record....well, I'll take the MP3's.

128k you mean.

What if they use 320k MP3's. HOW SAY YOU?!?!
